Once upon a time, there was a place of carved, stone faces. A man with a lantern lay sleeping a dreamless sleep. The man knew nothing.

One day, the man woke up, he rubbed the dried ink caked over his eyes and opened them. Around him, he saw a horizon of unbroken darkness.

Suddenly, a monster emerged from the darkness.




K I N G D O M D E A T H


A nightmare of endless darkness, cloaking an infinite Plain of Faces. This is the world known as Kingdom Death. Humanity occupies a low rung on Kingdom Death's many strange ecosystems, as they are hunted as prey, or herded and domesticated as draft animals. Occasionally some nightmarish trauma will awaken them from their delusions of safety, and tears the veil from their eyes. Though they may be driven by vengeance, grief, insanity, or curiosity, what they all share in common is their desperate desire to survive despite the horror of their reality.





This is a RP based on the underground-hit boardgame Kingdom Death: Monster, by Adam Poots. Described as "boutique nightmare horror," Kingdom Death is a game of survival against all odds in a world where humanity grapples with despair, madness, and the constant threat of extinction.

In my personal opinion, the setting of the game hits a sweet-spot of lore and backstory that gives you just enough to work with, and doesn't require a weeks-long wiki binge to understand. I also greatly enjoy its mood of grim survival against hopeless odds. As such, I'd like to run a game in this setting. I do have a plot planned, but the majority of the game would indeed be the players banding together to create a settlement and survive in Kingdom Death. We'd be going through the approximate layout of a 25-year campaign, with liberal time skips in between. As such, the majority of the game's lore will be revealed to the players as it is revealed to their characters. Meaning that there is no understanding of the game's lore needed to play, but I am shooting for a smaller group (six at an absolute maximum).

Essentially this will be a game of survival-horror and nightmare-fantasy. I'll be taking inspiration from similar sources as the original game, such as Berserk, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne. Now that there's a little interest, I can probably start elaborating in the character creation process.

Essentially your character will be built as the RP goes along. At the start they will have no skills, no memories, not even a name. However, you can establush ewrly on what sort of archetype you'd like your character to fall under (tank, ranger, support, etc), and they can gradually develop along that avenue.

Not exactly; characters gain improvements and attributes in a semi-random fashion, which then progress into natural synergies with certain equipment and playstyles.

This actually sounds quite nice as I have a certain taste for characters that can be further developed without all the details being mandatory at the start. Adds a sort of mystery.

Or perhaps I'm just lazy.

What resources or information would help you guys in working on your character concepts? You'll be starting with blank slates, more or less, but I can provide inspiration for paths your characters can take.

@Dead Cruiser I mostly want to see who joins and the characters.

I guess I have a few questions though. You mention everyone is a blank slate? so does that mean the CS will be as simple as appearance and personality?

And you say we gain traits etc randomly so we sort of randomly get put in roles? so we might end up with...for example two healers and no tank?

Also, and perhaps most importantly, you say you have a plot ready but it will mostly be down to the players. Does that mean it will, in effect, be a sandbox? and you'll throw random events etc at us and the settlement we make?

Great questions.

1. Essentially, yes. We'll be working with a "living CS" that will be updated as the story progresses. Thus the necessity of a small group to keep the bookkeeping managable.

2. Random perhaps only from the perspective of your characters. As I said, feel free to express to me what sort of character you would like to develop, and we'll work together on getting them there.

3. More or less. Basically the trials that your characters and settlement will endure are predetermined, and the choices you make will affect the outcome of these events.

@Dead Cruiser How unstable would a Forsaker be? Would they need to be caged until needed levels of insane or would they only really let loose in combat?
