Chapter One, The Great Crossing

The World of Parele is a strange one indeed.

Shrouded in mystery and covered in dangerous ancient ruins, floating islands, and ruthless creatures, it is no wonder that humanity has found a way to survive and prospered. There is much to be discovered in this world, many secrets to be unearthed... some wondrous and beautiful,

Others.... are probably better left buried, never to be unearthed to unleash the fury held beneath.

These legends, these secrets, all waiting in the shadows of a long forgotten time that had forever changed the surface of the world. Sought after by both Empires and explores alike. But every great adventure needs a beginning, and the problems that will be faced will seem small in comparison, but very real.

In the low hanging clouds of the West Ocean, a massive shadow is caste over the seas. A huge, floating island of rock lazily drifts through he sky, propelled by massive blades and powerful engines. It is known as the Kingdom of Avalia, a nation state that is situated on this large island. An old kingdom with a long reigning dynasty of royals and nobles. The society is strictly separated into noble class, with very little to no chance of mobility. It has been this way for centuries, yet as the times move on and an era of industry and technology begin to elevate to the next level, so to does winds of history.

Murmurs in the dark corners of the Beggars Quarters of the two cities on this island, whispers in the quiet bars of the Factory District, grumbles in the Mines. All of these talk of a rebellion on the rise, waiting, biding its time for the perfect moment to strike. Air, even among the upper class is tense, though, perhaps not because of these silly commoner rumors. No, they are worried about something seemingly far more threatening, something that everyone knew.

For you see, each year, many of these islands suddenly and naturally drift across the West Ocean. Nobody has been able to explain why, but what is known is that the journey is always hard. Communication and trade with the outside world becomes difficult and these islands become threatened by rival islands, mercenaries, pirates, and rarely... flying monsters and ancient abominations. These threats being ever present, meant that Avalia's military was always of the utmost importance.

The Royal Airborne Fleet is Avalia's true bulwark against the threats of the outside world during this journey. A powerful, modern fleet of airships that have always protected the skies of the kingdom... or so they thought. Roughly twelve years ago, during the 88th Crossing of the West Ocean, they came under attack by a group known as the "Sky Clan". Initially the military command dismissed them as nothing but fanatical, religious barbarians that would pose little threat to the mighty Airborne Fleet. They were horribly mistaken and the resulting war severely damaged the nation and the spirit of the nation as the Sky Clan proved to outclass Avalia in both technology and doctrine.

Dawn breaking on the RAS Arkillia and RAS Falcon after seventy two hours of constant fighting during the final Grand Battle of the Royal Estate, in which eighty percent of the fleet was destroyed.

It was a severe wake up call, and would have lead to the destruction of the nation if it weren't for the heroes of the war such as Captain, now Admiral Alex Falke, Admiral Roger Endoven, Ace Hannah Alborne, or Lieutenant Lawrence Canon as well as the valiant men of the fleet. This resulted in a serious shake down of the military command after the war, allowing gaps for potential conspirators to fill.

Now as the 100th Crossing of the West Ocean begins, everyone is on edge. The Sky Clan has made vows and promises to strike Avalia and there are rumors of a new airborne beast attacking shipping and fleets over the West Ocean. So as the festivities are cleaned up and everyone prepares for the long journey ahead, cracks are beginning to form.

With all this, for some, it is just the beginning of a new school year. The Avalian National Air Academy, an incredibly prestigious school where some of the most famous aces and admirals of the world have come from. This school is unique in Avalian society, as it doesn't strictly separate people by social class while teaching or in class. This stop both parties from ignoring these equality rules or abusing them, but it has allowed at least some intermingling between the groups. As the bell tolls and the students begin to arrive at the school, many are simply looking forward to ignoring the growing sense of dread and tension and focusing on their studies, or girls, or boys, or partying till ya drop dead.

For two particular individuals, this will definitely be a stimulating year... to say the least.

A bus rolled along the scenic countryside near the Academy. Aboard were the noble children who were coming to attend this school for their first year, on there way to their dorms. While on the face of the school boasts of mixing the social classes, one only needed to look a little closer to see how people were subverting that system. The commoner students were mostly forced to walk or find their own means of transportation, but a "private" bus service "offers" noble children a ride to the school from their homes and estates. That's why most children of nobles don't live in the dormitories, but rather just take their own personal transportation to and from the school, should the distance allow. Of course, not all noble children live close enough, so here they were, on their way to the dorms of the Avalian National Air Academy.

One such student of Ava Falke, daughter of Alex Falke, and currently too excited for her own good about today. Unlike nearly all her peers, she willingly chose to live on campus, taking this opportunity of independence as soon as she had gotten it. This was the beginning of her adventure, and it seemed almost childish to her to return home every night after going to the Academy. The bus arrived in front of the dorm building, almost just as the commoner students began to trickle in. Some showed signs of exhaustion, carrying their own luggage and personal items on foot, while some fared only slightly better. The noble children filled out of the bus, and followed by a few servants who began unloading the luggage for the "unfortunate" nobles who had to move into these sub par accommodations.

However, earning some stares from both the noble children and commoners alike, Ava walked off the bus duffel bag and suit case in hand. While the nobles sneered, they made no attempts at directing confronting her, as even they knew better then to go after the daughter of one the most famous heroes of the country. She confidently strides into the commons of the dorm, various students already mingling and checking the bulletin board for their room assignment, and then stood their blankly.

"Erm... shit, where was I supposed to go?" Ava thought to herself, glancing around confused.

Roy looked out the window as the bus rolled along the road. He had never been this far from the city and it was a little disorientating. He had never left the city and now he was on his way to the Academy to learn what he needed to fly. He was honestly quite worried about all of this. He had to keep up the act of being a noble while also keeping himself near the top of the class. That meant cutting the throat of anyone that stood in his way. It was brutal but these blue bloods deserved it. They had been given everything for free while he had to fight for every little scrap he had. It was not a fun life but now he had the chance to change everything. That meant that he had to keep the charade going. Since, he did not want to stand out and that meant staying on campus for now. Staying on campus meant he could keep his eyes on the other students. He needed to watch out for everyone else. These people were smarter than they looked. He could not let any of this slip.

Roy looked the part of a bored noble. He had the bored expression of someone who had seen this all before. On the inside, he was like a little kid. This was amazing. To see the sky without the smog of the city. He was far from the poor bastard that he was born as. The school looked far to opulent for his liking but he was not allowed to say that. He most certainly not allowed to take his own luggage. A young noble was not to take such a job. He nodded to the servant with his baggage as they walked towards his dorm room. To most nobles, it would have been seen as sub-par but to Roy they were amazing. He had been born and lived in one of the foulest parts of the Kingdom. This room was perfect for him. He nodded to the servant as he walked out of the room.

Roy sauntered into the common room and looked around. It was time to lay on the charm. He saw a girl looking around the room. He decided to walk up and talk to her. "They all look so lost, don't they." He said trying to be conversational. "Roy Whitney. " he said trying to do his best noble way of talking. "And you are?"

"They all look so lost, don't they." a young noble man said, approaching Ava. She sort of recognized him from the bus, but as none of the others on the bus were for socializing with her, it wasn't like she was keeping tabs on everyone. Adjusting the luggage strap on her shoulder, she smiled.

"Yeah, and ya might as well count me among them! Can't seem to find my room on this board." she said, motioning to the bulletin board. "The name's Ava Falke, nice to meet you Roy." She gave a small nod, as her hands were a little full at the moment. It was just then when a small group of noble children approached. They were lead by a tall, red haired man who scoffed when he saw Roy. "Great..." Ava muttered under her breath as they approached.

"Ava, my dear, what on Parele are you doing? Why is your servant here not carrying your luggage for you?! He should be beaten in the streets for such... wait a minute." The noble leaned in closer, almost as if he was inspecting a cattle rather than Roy. "Ahh, my mistake! You must be Roy Whitney from the Whitney family! Sorry, I tend to confuse low borns like you with commoners. Terribly sorry." he finished with a sly grin. Ava audibly sighed and turned to the young man.

"What do you want, Finnbar? Suppose you didn't come over here to be a gentleman and help me, did you? Or do you just love that voice of yours so much that you wanted to harass my ears with it?" she said, angrily. Alexander Finnbar simply laughed.

"Oh my, Ava you always have that spicy attitude of yours raring to go! I just simply thought someone of your stature would be more suited talking to the future Grand Admiral of our esteemed navy then some low born land owner. He may be no commoner, but he's still not fit to even lick the boots of people like us. Come now, I'll have my servant deliver your things to your room. Best not waste your time here with this man." he said, the posy that followed him giggling at Roy. Ava just simply shrugged, picked up her bag, and began to walk in the opposite direction.

"Hey Roy, let's go figure out this damn maze of a dorm." she said without looking back. A dumbfounded Alexander stood behind her, nearly still with disbelief, before scoffing and walking away himself. Before he left he spat in the general direction of Roy and muttered some insult under his breath.

Roy gave the girl his best smile. He still had to pretend that he was just some low born noble. Still even he knew who this girl was. Her father was arguably one of the most famous men in the city. Even a guy like Roy could admit that Alex Falke was a hero. He had also heard that his daughter was a bit of a spitfire. He was surprised that the first person he met was the daughter of a hero. Roy quickly put his hand down. He was a little flustered from that but he managed to control himself as a gaggle of nobles sauntered over. He could already tell he would hate these people.

He had no idea who this guy was but he wanted to punch him in the face. Roy kept a polite smile on his face. Everything he had read told him that punching this man in the face would not help him at all. Still, he was used to be looking down on by people like him. In his old neighborhood, he would be already wiping this guy's blood and teeth off of his hands. There were better ways in this world to deal with people like him.

"It's not hard to spot a pompous windbag like you, friend." He said with that fake smile still plastered on his face. He already knew he preferred Ava's quick tongue. She was more his speed over Finnbar and his cronies. "I fear for the kingdom should someone like you become Grand Admiral. A dog would be a better Grand Admiral than you." He said as he turned and followed Ava away. He grabbed his bags as he followed her.

"I swear I will never understand this place." He said before he turned and looked at Alexander. "He is a bastard, that one." He said to Ava as they walked away. He was not going to stand down but he also wanted to follow with Ava. He turned back towards Ava as his mood changed. "So I hope you know where we are going. Cause I am hopelessly lost right now." He admitted as he kept walking.

Ava shook her head. "Would it be shocking if I told you we've known each other since we were little kids?" she said with a sad grin. "Surprisingly enough, he wasn't always a bastard. I don't know what happened, but as he got older, he became aggressively less fun to be around. At least for me, doesn't stop some lower borns licking his boots in order to gain some sort of favor or whatever. " she said, finishing with a shrug. Glancing around, she had somewhat led the pair to the basic lounge, were students were meeting and greeting with each other. Today was simply the move in and tour day, with tomorrow officially being orientation and classes, so the students were quite relax, some in their dorms unpacking, others in here, meeting their fellow classmates and making friends. Roy spoke up behind Ava as the pair came to a stop

"So I hope you know where we are going. Cause I am hopelessly lost right now." He admitted, glancing around, equally lost. Ava shrugged, put down her bags, and called out to a nearby student who was busy chatting to some girl.

"Hey, excuse me! Could you help us for a second?" The student nervously approached, gave a small bow, and mumbled something along the lines of agreement. Ava rolled her eyes and shook her head. This was obviously a commoner, but she wasn't about to abuse her status. Hell, she thought the whole point of this school was to mingle among classes in the first place! "Look kid, if your busy chatting up the pretty lady over there, then don't let me stop you." she said, but the young man recoiled in discuss.

"Wha? No, no no no, she's my sister! Eugh..." he said, with both Ava and the girl who had approached laughing.

"Sorry, my brother is quite shy. I'm Elena Vortz, and this is Edgar Vortz, nice to meet you. You must be Miss Falke, right?" the sister said, smiling while the brother looked away with embarrassment.

"The one and only." Ava said with a smile.

"We can happily show you around. We got here early and got a chance to look around the campus and dorms. I can show you to girls Dorms and Edgar here can show your friend." Elena said, gesturing in the general direction of both dorms. Ava nodded and turned to Roy.

"Well, sounds like a plan. Wanna meet up here afterwards?"
