What if roleplayer guild is really a city.

The internet as a whole is more or less a barren wasteland of desert, ice, fire and brimstone, or a lush green forest full of deadly plants, and animals.

Getting banned would mean getting kicked out of the city, and being forced to travel across the wasteland to find a new place to live.
