Early summer, daytime.
In the village hidden in the mist it is a big day for small people. Graduation day. The day when all those children who has the talent to manipulate chakra can become real ninjas. many couldn’t even sleep last night.
In a class consisting of about fifty students only thirty passed the final exam and was given their foreheadprotectors with the symbol of kira engraved on them. The teacher stood before them, looking proud.
“Today you will graduate, and become genin. In a little while I will divide you into teams of three and send you off to meet your new teacher, one of the hidden mist’s fine jounin. Work hard, train well.
I will now read the teams out loud, please pay attention and wait until all teams have been announced until you leave.”
The teacher started to read the list in his hand. Each team consisted of three names, and then the name of their jounin.
“Team number nine: Kaguya Keisuke, Nori Muira, Takata Kaoru. Your teacher will be Chitanda Ruka.”
They were told where to meet their jounin, waited for everyone to have his or her name called, and then left the school for the last time. Today was the first day of a new life.

During the choosing of Genin to be in their designated teams, the Jounin were in a conference with the Mizukage, this conference happens every year for Jounin to receive their students however there is a Kunoichi who apparently does not give the seal of approval for the Genin candidates that were suppose to be under her tutelage and that Jounin is none other than Chitanda Ruka. One of the youngest and finest Jounin in the hidden village of the Mist, Ruka was once hailed as a Demon Princess in her younger years, now 26 years old, everything change but the end doesn't justify the means, the fact that she doesn't have any students, how will the batch of Genin this year will make it? Ruka is a Kunoichi who shouldn't be judge by her looks, a strict and unpredictable Jounin like her knows what is best for her candidates.

There is a running gag that the Kunoichi, Ruka frequently gets mistaken for a boy but that's all just people's delusions, she waits firmly at the Beach in village and prior to that she had left hints about her whereabouts and that already marked the first test of her candidates, they must be able to find her within five minutes. According to Ruka, this first stage determines their standing as a Shinobi based on their skills to see who is worthy of becoming Team Leader among the three, a sensor, a speedster and whatever one may be. This test is a torture, Ruka always use various methods of head start training for the candidates, fail the first test, all of them will be send back to the academy but sometimes if she is kind enough, she will reconsider.

They must find the hint from the black cat that has an an envelop strap on it's back.
"The wind blows south, beautifully on its path, thy tongue requires quench as the arousing waters distorted itself." It is optional to solve the poem or not.

Keisuke felt extremely disappointed. Most other teams had either been led away from the academy by their new sensei or had been given the location where this person could be found. He, and his new teammates, had been given a challenge instead. They had already introduced themselves. His new friends were called Takata Kaoru and Muira Nori, whom the teacher had presented as Nori Muira. They seemed normal enough, but with ninjas you could never be sure.
“Find the hint in the envelope on the back of a black cat…” Keisuke turned the sentence inside out in his head, he tried to find something else to work with.
“Considering the time restriction of five minutes the cat must be somewhere close to the academy.” This was Nori speaking.
“That’s right, it’d take us at least five minutes just to get to places like the watchtower, the seven swordsmen compound or the harbor.” Kaoru chimed in.
“So we’re looking for a black cat with an envelope on its back somewhere within five minutes’ run from here. that doesn’t narrow it down much, but at least it’s a start…”

Keisuke got up and walked over to the door, he got his forehead protector and tied it neatly around his head. “The timer starts when we open this door, get ready. I’ll search the square and mizukage mansion.” From his pouch he pulled out his standard-issue com-set and put it around his neck. “I’ll be on frequency 18, let me know if you find anything.”
Without any more warning he put his foot to the door and it flew open with a bang. the sight on the other side of the door was breathtaking. Hundreds if not thousands of cats were waiting for them. Some black, some white and some in between. The cats all looked back at him as if they were judging him, which was part of why Keisuke didn't like cats, smug bastards... While he was still recuperating from the shock Nori came walking by, he was humming something Keisuke couldn't quite make out and started to toss pieces of fish around. It looked like a good strategy until one of the little beasts suddenly attacked. The critter got away with a mouthful of fish which would've been entertaining to no end if Nori's next words hadn't ruined the joke. The cat had the envelope.
"Piss on this" Keisuke swore under his breath, he had been too busy enjoying Nori's demise to see where the cat had run off to. Surveying the scene in front of him there were several groups of cats leaving the academy at high speed. Before the eyes of his new teammates Keisuke suddenly disappeared, and he didn't reappear again until he was far from the door where he'd left his teammates, right behind a big, black cat.

“Nori! I am so sad we aren’t going to be team mates,” Miya exclaimed as soon as she saw her missing classmate slip in. His sleeveless faun colored deerskin poncho top was very distinctive.

“I guess I lucked out. There are only three of you in the class so most teams won’t have a kunoichi this year,” Nori replied with a smile as he held out a small present.

The girl squealed with delight. “Is that for me?”

“Yes! I have one for Oka and one for Ruri as well. I – …”

Nori fell over as he was tackled by his overjoyed female classmate. He hugged her back. The other two girls were not around. He guessed they must have left while he was talking to Miya. The newly inducted genin pouted when it was time for his friend to leave. Things would have been way more fun if he had any of his closer friends on his team. Still as far as team mates were concerned Kao-kun and Keisuke were not too bad. Keisuke might be quiet but he was a pretty okay in class. Kao-kun on the other hand was hard working and really smart. Heck the kid was one whole year younger than all of them!

He quickly found the other two members of his team. They were sitting in the same row but almost five chairs apart. His forehead protector can wait. There were more important things to do like getting Keisuke to talk or cheering Kaoru up. Nori stood sat on the table in between his two silent team mates.

“I think our sensei might be setting up a test for us or something.”

He shut up after that. No one was responding. He was secretly relieved when their former chunin sensei came to inform them about a special test. Finding a black cat didn’t seem that hard. Considering he had fish with him. There was simply no time to feed his usual furry friends on the way to school today because he overslept. The brown haired boy turned to look in the Kaguya’s direction when he heard Keisuke repeating the instruction in a very audible whisper.

“Considering the time restriction of five minutes the cat must be somewhere close to the academy.”

The words barely left his mouth when Kaoru finally spoke for the first time that day, “That’s right, it’d take us at least five minutes just to get to places like the watchtower, the seven swordsmen compound or the harbor.”

“Should we split up and look?”

Nori jumped slightly when Keisuke kicked the door open. The corners of his mouth quivered slightly as he attempted not to laugh at the other boy’s shock at seeing such a big clowder gathered at the door. Singing mostly to himself the Miura boy stepped pass the Kaguya and wadded among the sea of cats. He had been around many different cats before but something was off about some of them. Calmly the twelve year old reached behind and opened his backpack. He pulled out his lunchbox. The smell of the grilled fish made the cats gathered there meow frantically.

Ignoring the few clawing at the legs of his black pants Nori began tossing pieces of fish meat as far as he can. Most of the normal cats remained in front of him begging for food while the “odd” ones seem to be darting for the morsels that he flung far away. One of the bolder ones leaped up and grabbed onto the hood of his poncho. The force almost made the poor genin stumble. He frowned. Now this one even seems to be emitting chakra. How was that possible?

“Hey!”

Before he could even tilt his head far enough to look at the cat hanging from his back. The black feline leaped onto his head, grabbed the fish in its mouth and ran. Nori fell backwards onto the ground with a loud groan. The remains of his lunch box scattered everywhere. He quickly look up just in time to see the cat running off in the direction of the library.

“Get that cat!” He yelled frantically. “It has the envelope.”

Kaoru wasn’t exactly sure what to think of his new teammates, or this challenge. Then again, none of this was really standard procedure.

The bijuu had been talking in his head the entire morning, and the one time she shut up to take a nap he found he could be a person again. It was a strange feeling. He was scared as hell to have to prove himself to the village, but he’d been training at this for so long. He wouldn’t let anything get in his way this time.

For once, he actually spoke: “That’s right, it’d take us at least five minutes just to get to places like the watchtower, the seven swordsmen compound or the harbor.” He figured the sensei would be of someplace with significance, if they had to figure out her location from a riddle. She wouldn’t be hidden somewhere where clues would be useless. That left, within a reasonable distance, the three places he had mentioned.

Kaoru knew that the riddle held the answer to where their sensei was hidden, but he didn’t particularly care about words. For one, he had a hunch about the seven swordsmen compound. Kaoru was convinced that waiting around for Keisuke to find a bunch of words wouldn’t help anything. Besides, he was determined to prove himself as a Genin – the Mizukage’s words could only stave off the comments of the entire village for so long. He had to be strong.

He observed the spectacle with the cats and fish with calculating eyes, making note of his teammates – and wondering on what planet they would work together. As it stood, he was the last person to leave, but he wasn’t really interested in playing with the felines wandering outside.

Without the sinking weight of the narrator inside his head, Kaoru felt almost happy, free for once. He smiled, waved at Nori, and called, “I’ll go to the seven swordsmen compound! Tell me what you find!”

The grin felt foreign on his face, clumsy. It disappeared when he left to run to the compound, sprinting as quickly as his legs would allow. He wasn’t entirely sure of the location of the building, but Kaoru had definitely seen it before – and thankfully he hadn’t gotten lost.

Adrenaline coursing through his veins, feeling more elated than he had in years, Kaoru knocked on the door to the building and bounced around, waiting for somebody to answer. He didn’t really consider who would answer the door, or what they would say when they saw the village failure at their doorstep, but he was too excited to even think about it.

There were around five or six cats of various blackness in front of Keisuke when he reappeared. Cats are generally given the attribute of good reflexes and speed, but with the shunshin no jutsu the genin could move close enough to grab one before they’d even have a chance to notice him. Before the human was able to blink and make sure he was where he thought he was every animal in the vicinity had somehow gotten up and was either starting to move or had already managed to run a short bit. Keisuke’s first reaction was to chase them, but he didnät have the time, and stopped himself mid-step. None of them had the envelope he was looking for.

He’d repeated this exercise a hundred times during the last minute, every time he spotted a black, or at least semi-black, cat. Time was running out and he could feel it. They had to find the damned cat right now and get that clue if they’d have any chance of finding out where their jounin was waiting… They could just hope that they’d be able to get there in time.

He spotted another cat and semi-instantly transported himself to it. It reacted first and managed to run away before he was able to get a good look, but he was fairly sure it wasn’t carrying the envelope.
his extended use of the shunshin no jutsu, a C-ranked ninjutsu, had taken its toll. He couldn’t keep it up forever, but on the other hand if he didn’t he would probably miss the clue.

He paused in a corner and tried to catch his breath, sweat was literally running his face. He wiped it from his eyes with his sleeve and looked around.
He was by the marketplace, but there was no stalls up this day, the open area looked huge and deserted. A few scraps of paper were left behind, obviously a future mission for one of the new genin teams.
“You there, boy, come here!” the voice was gentle, yet commanding. Keisuke looked around for the speaker and found an old lady sitting outside a restaurant, enjoying the warm weather. Unsure about what to do keisuke went to her, after all you should always respect your elders.
As he approached the lady ordered him to sit down and pointed with her cane at an empty chair beside her. Keisuke sat, but immediately told her that he could not stay and made a move to get up again.
“Nonsense!” The lady said. A waitress carrying a tray came by and placed a clear glass on the table. There was water inside, cold enough to draw water from the air around it to its outside. A lonely cube of ice floated around.
“Drink, go ahead. Boys like you always forget to drink, you looked just about ready to pass out over there.”
He was thirsty, and warm. So warm in fact that he feared that he might melt the ice cube if he touched the glas. His thirst won, both arms shot out and he grabbed the slippery vessel firmly and brought it to his mouth. He didn’t so much drink the water as he poured it down his throat. Around his third gulp he could feel the back of his throat freezing, but he welcomed it. The small hairs on his arms began to stand and he felt the liquid cool him from the inside.
The old lady chuckled lightly at the sight, and met his gaze with much kinder eyes when he finally put the glass back on the table.
“I must pay for it” Keisuke said and reached for his pocket.
“Wouldn’t dream of it. It warms an old womans heart to see young people running around like you do. It helps me remember what it was like…” She closed her eyes and a smile spread across her face.
“I must go” Keisuke tried again and the lady opened her eyes.
“Of course” she said, like she suddenly realised that she was keeping him here.
“Young ninja like you, obviously off on a great adventure and such… Tell an old woman, what are you running around for?”
Keisuke thought about it for a second. It could be a test, you weren’t supposed to reveal anything about your mission to outsiders, but she was just an old lady, what harm could it do?
“I’m looking for a black cat with an envelope in its collar” he said and made a firm gesture that he was about to turn around and leave. The old womans eyes opened up just a bit and he sat up straight. She opened her mouth and drew in air as if to speak and then suddenly jumped.
Her slightly crooked back became as straight as a lank, her eyes wide open in terror. “Gah!” She cried and with both hands she threw something from her lap into the street.
“Little demon!” She cursed after the bundle “clawing ld people like that, you should be…”
the rest of her rant was lost to Keisuke. He had just noticed what the old lady had thrown away. A black cat with a paper envelope stuck in its collar. It looked back at him, meowed once and took off.

“Thanks for the water!” Keisuke yelled at the old lady and started to run after the cat. After following it for just a little while he tried using his shunshin to catch up, but as he did the cat jumped to the side and he missed completely. His shunshin was getting slower, and the sudden energy he’d gained from the cold water had been drained by that one technique. He was fast enough to keep up with the cat without techniques, but couldn’t hope to catch it on his own, especially not if it decided to go someplace where there were a lot of people.
He looked around and noticed where they were heading, and then touched his com-collar.
“Following it from the market to the seven swordsmen’s compound. Need help.”
He terminated the transmission as suddenly as he’d started it and tried to focus on the animal he was chasing. Even if he got help it would be for nothing if he lost sight of it before someone arrived.

“And just who the hell do you think you are?!”

The man behind the door to the compound was three things – almost twice Kaoru’s height, more than twice his weight, and angry beyond belief.

He flushed, and stammered out, “I – I was wondering if – if you saw a black cat with an envelope around its collar?”

The door was shut in his face before Kaoru could even say anything else. So much for that idea.

Kaoru was just about to head to one of the other locations when a voice crackled in through the com set. He had almost forgotten about it, and jumped at the sudden noise.

“Following it from the market to the seven swordsmen’s compound. Need help.”

Ah, perfect! All was not lost – at least, not yet. Kaoru moved his hands into the practiced signals and created five clones – he was surprised that he wasn’t the least bit tired. When the bijuu slept, it was like he was an entirely different person. The clones scattered, running towards the marketplace to intercept the cat. Meanwhile, Kaoru was grinning ear to ear – he’d just done that! On a good day, it was a miracle if he could keep up one clone. But take away the bijuu and he was better than any genin at making clones.

Kaoru was just about to leave the compound when the door opened, and out came three towering men, all looking just as angry as the one that had answered the door.

A man with a scar running from his forehead to his chin yelled, “What the hell is some demon doing here? Get lost, kid!”

Kaoru was about to defend himself, to say that he was on an assignment, and it was his first one, and he was happy for once and he didn’t want them to ruin it – but of course, they would. The man who had answered the door scowled, yelling further insults.

Kaoru wiped the tears from his face, and did as they suggested. He didn’t want to get into any fights on his first day.

He was surprised he could still maintain the clones without the slightest bit of fatigue – the bijuu probably sapped quite a bit of energy from him. To make sure, he created a few more, and said into the microphone, “I’m coming and I sent some clones along the way. Where did you say the cat was going – “

His question was answered when the cat appeared out of the undergrowth, and darted straight past Kaoru. He and his clones followed quickly after, sprinting to keep up with the creature.

“It got past us! Still heading towards the seven swordsmen compound!”
