"That's very kind of you, but I must refuse. It wouldn't be polite of me to take some of your food when I promised to get more for you." Said Freya before moving on to a food stall.

Although hesistant, the vendor srill accepted Freya's money and gave her the food she had requested. As she walked back, Freya figired to tell the girl about one of the dead legends she had cone to know from her past ventures into ruins. She presented to the girl the food she had promised to get, and prepared her magic over the armor puppet. She also placed soneover the doll she had on her person. She would have to be careful this time around.

"I am an adventurer of sorts. So I encounter some facinating stories, most of which are forgotten. I will tell you one of these stories."

Defendia grabbed the food and got into a better sitting position, alr3eady eating th3e food that was given to her.

I wonder if this story will involve a magic user. Stupid magic users, they think they're all good because they can cast more than just shield spells. I bet this story will involve some kind of "master" mage who knows a bunch of spells.

Before she knew it, she had already finished the food given to her, so she went to grab another from her pile.

I already don't like this story.

Once the girl had received her food, Freya began to use her abilities. The armor asembled itsel and she made it walk over to them. When Iit had arrived, a doll popped out from under Freya's armor. This was also being controlled by her. It jumped into the armor puppet, and after a moment, it came back out with a book. It handed Freya tge book, and returned to where it was before. Freya flipped through the old, worn and torn book, until she found one of her favorite stories. After taking a breath, she began to read it aloud.

Family members have tears in their eyes when they welcome Kaim back to the inn from his long journey.

"Thank you so much for coming."

He understands the situation immediately. The time for departure is drawing near. Too soon, too soon. But still, he knows, this day would have come sometime, and not in the distant future.

"I might never see you again," she said to him with a sad smile when he left on this journey, her smiling face almost transparent in its whiteness, so fragile—and therefore indescribably beautiful—as she lay in bed.

"May I see Hanna now?" he asks.

The innkeeper gives him a tiny nod and says, "I don't think she'll know who you are, though.""She hasn't opened her eyes since last night," he warns Kaim.

You can tell from the slight movement of her chest that she is clinging to a frail thread of life, but it could snap at any moment.

"It's such a shame. I know you made a special point to come here for her..."
Another tear glides down the wife's cheek.

"Never mind, it's fine." Kaim says.

He has been present at innumerable deaths, and his experience has taught him much. Death takes away the power of speech first of all. Then the ability to see. What remains alive to the very end, however, is the power to hear. Even though the person has lost consciousness, it is by no means unusual for the voices of the family to bring forth smiles or tears. Kaim puts his arm around the woman's shoulder and says, "I have lots of travel stories to tell her. I've been looking forward to this my whole time on the road."

Instead of smiling, the woman releases another large tear and nods to Kaim, "And Hanna was so looking forward to hear your stories."

Her sobs almost drown out her words.

The innkeeper says, "I wish I could urge you to rest up from your travels before you see her, but..."

Kaim interrupts his apologies, "Of course I'll see her right away."

There is very little time left. Hanna, the only daughter of the innkeeper and his wife, will probably breathe her last before the sun comes up. Kaim lowers his pack to the floor and quietly opens the door to Hanna's room. Hanna was frail from birth. Far from enjoying the opportunity to travel, she rarely left the town or even the neighborhood in which she was born and raised. This child will probably not live to adulthood, the doctor told her parents. This tiny girl, with extraordinarily beautiful doll-like features, the gods had dealt an all-too-sad destiny. That they had allowed her to be born the only daughter of the keepers of a small inn was perhaps one small act of atonement for such iniquity. Hanna was unable to go anywhere, but the guests who stayed at her parent’s inn would tell her stories of the countries and towns and landscapes and people that she would never know. Whenever new guests arrived at the inn, Hanna would ask them,"Where are you from?" "Where are you going?" "Can you tell me a story?" She would sit and listen to their stories with sparkling eyes, urging them on to new episodes with "And then? And then?"

When they left the inn, she would beg them, "Please come back, and tell me lots and lots of stories about faraway countries!" She would stand there waving until the person disappeared far in the distance, give one lonely sigh, and go back to bed. Hanna is sound asleep. No one else is in the room, perhaps an indication that she has long since passed the stage when the doctors can do anything for her. Kaim sits down in the chair next to the bed and says with a smile."Hello, Hanna, I’m back."

She does not respond. Her little chest, still without the swelling of a grown woman, rises and falls almost imperceptibly.

"I went far across the ocean this time," he tells her. "The ocean on the side where the sun comes up. I took a boat from the harbor way way way far beyond the mountains you can see from this window, and I was on the sea from the time the moon was perfectly round till it got smaller and smaller then bigger and bigger until it was full again. There was nothing but ocean as far as the eye could see. Just the sea and the sky. Can you imagine it, Hanna? You’ve never seen the ocean, but I’m sure people have told you about it. It’s like a huge, big endless puddle." Kaim chuckles to himself, and it seems to him that Hanna’s pale white cheek moves slightly. She can hear him. Even if she cannot speak or see, her ears are still alive.

Believing and hoping this to be true, Kaim continues with the story of his travels. He speaks no words of parting. As always with Hanna, Kaim smiles with a special gentleness he has never shown to anyone else, and he goes on telling his tales with a bright voice, sometimes even accompanying his story with exaggerated gestures. He tells her about the blue ocean. He tells her about the blue sky. He says nothing about the violent sea battle that stained the ocean red. He never tells her about those things.
Hanna was still a tiny girl when Kaim first visited the inn. When she asked him "Where are you from?" and "Will you tell me some stories?" with her childish pronunciation and innocent smile, Kaim felt soft glow in his chest. At the time, he was returning from a battle. More precisely, he had ended one battle and was on his way to the next.

His life consisted of traveling from one battlefield to another, and nothing about that has changed to this day. He has taken the lives of countless enemy troops, and witnessed the deaths of countless comrades on the battlefield. Moreover, the only thing separating enemies from comrades is the slightest stroke of fortune. Had the gears of destiny turned in a slightly different way, his enemies would have been comrades and his comrades enemies, This is the fate of the mercenary. He was spiritually worn down back then and feeling unbearably lonely. As a possessor of eternal life, Kaim had no fear of death, which was precisely why each of the soldier’s faces distorted in fear, and why each face of a man who died in agony was burned permanently into his brain.Ordinarily, he would spend nights on the road drinking. Immersing himself in an alcoholic stupor—or pretending to. He was trying to make himself forget the unforgettable. When, however, he saw Hanna’s smile and begged him for stories about his long journey, he felt a far warmer and deeper comfort then he could even obtain from liquor. He told her many things...About the beautiful flower he discovered on the battlefield. About the bewitching beauty of the mist filling the forest the night before the final battle. About the marvelous taste of the spring water in a ravine where he and his men had fled after losing the battle. About a vast, bottomless blue sky he saw after battle. He never told her anything sad. He kept his mouth shut about the human ugliness and stupidity he witnessed endlessly on the battlefield. He concealed his position as a mercenary for her, kept silent regarding his reasons for traveling constantly, and spoke only of things that were beautiful and sweet and lovely. He sees now that he told Hanna only beautiful stories of the road like this not so much out of concern for her purity, but for his own sake. Staying in the inn where Hanna waited to see him turned out to be one of Kaim’s small pleasures in life. Telling her about the memories he brought back from his journeys, he felt some degree of salvation, however slight.

Five years, ten years, his friendship with the girl continued. Little by little, she neared adulthood, which meant that, as the doctors had predicted, each day brought her that much closer to death. And now, Kaim ends the last travel story he will share with her. He can never see her again, can never tell her stories again. Before dawn, when the darkness of night is at its deepest, long pauses enter into Hanna’s breathing. The frail thread of her life is about to snap as Kaim and her parents watch over her. The tiny light that has lodged in Kaim’s breast will be extinguished. His lonely travels will begin again tomorrow—his long, long travels without end.

"You’ll be leaving on travels of your own soon, Hanna." Kaim tells her gently. "You’ll be leaving for a world that no one knows, a world that has never entered into any of the stories you have heard so far. Finally, you will be able to leave your bed and walk anywhere you want to go. You’ll be free."
He wants her to know that death is not sorrow but a joy mixed with tears. "It’s your turn now. Be sure and tell everyone about the memories of your journey."

Her parents will make that same journey someday. And someday Hanna will be able to meet all the guests she has known at the inn, far beyond the sky. Kaim, however, can never go there. He can never escape this world. He can never see her again.

"This is not goodbye. It’s just the start of your journey." He speaks his final words to her. "We’ll meet again."

His final lie to her.

Hanna makes her departure. Her face is transfused with a tranquil smile as if she has just said, "See you soon." Her eyes will never open again. A single tear glides slowly down her cheek...

Freya closed the book. She thought to herself if it was enjoyable for the girl. She hoped it was. It was one of Freya's favorite stories within the book l. She looked to the girl to find out.

Tears were welling up in Defendia's eyes.My this isn't anything like the action stories I hear from father. She was about to reach or her frilly handkerchief before she stopped herself.

Don't cry, don't cry, a noble woman shouldn't cry to a commoner's story! Defendia stood and turned away from Freya, trying to wipe the tears from her eyes.

"W-what a silly story! Maybe if they had the money to get a master cleric that wouldn't have happened! S-s-such stories of the poor only amuse me, O-OHOHOHOHOHO!"
She laughed while tears fell from her face.

Freya grinned behind her horned helmet. The stuttering in her sentences say different words than her own voice does

"I am glad that you enjoyed the story..."

Freya realized that she had yet to know the girl's name. Freya had her arnor puppet hold onto the book as she picked her greave and gauntlet to put it back on. After retrieving the book, she faced the girl again and bowed.

"I am Freya Yates. Might I ask what your name is?"

Defendia slumped a little bit after being found out of her amazing facade. Truly this was a master of reading expressions.

"T-think whatever you want!" She puffed as she crossed her arms and looked away.

When asked her name. Defendia was a little shocked. Did they really go this long without knowing each other's name? She turned around, hands on her hips and striking a triumphant pose.

"I am Defendia, a noble woman who has thrown away her true identity on the journey to becoming a great magic user. Remember this name, for when you hear it being associated with becoming the greatest magic user in the world, you can remember on how you had the privilege of giving her food and telling her a story! OHOHOHOHOHO!"

Tanya wiped her forehead as she closed the chestplate.
"Well, big guy? How ya feelin'?"
"SYSTEMS CHECK. . . M23 IS FULLY FUNCTIONAL."
"That's great, because ya see..."
She opened her coinpurse.
"We're back to square one."
"UNFORTUNATE."
"Yeah."

Jack, for his part, could not have been doing better. He was doing so well it was almost absurd, there was exactly zero point in stealing anymore. He'd gathered up so much money he literally had no idea what to do with it, so he began spending. All kinds of food, drinks both alcoholic and not, numerous trinkets, some actual jewelry, anything he could get his hands on, like a man going shopping at the very last day of a trip and trying to get a present for every single member of an extended family. And then he spread these acquistions around, trading them for other things which he then sold or gifted to whoever asked, a whole lot of impoverished people included. By the time he was out of stuff he'd bought, he had a decent chunk of change again. It was all so pointless it was as if he was just wasting time till the festival actually started.

Eventually the town bells began to rang signalling that the festivities were to begin . Throngs of people all converged over the relatively tiny area to listen to the introduction and mass blessing. The man in the odd outfit and hat that was disappointed in his endeavors soon found himself rubbing up against a mass of people moving to the plaza. Soon the magically enhanced voice of the priestess boomed over the crowd. She greeted them all and then began into an explanation behind the festival and gave out the traditional prayer and invocations.

Within the plaza stood some sort of portable shrine with a statue and as she talked the other clergy would move some objects and start lighting torches that would give colored flame. Then they would be moved to different racks with their purpose being conveniently explained. While a processional band would start the opening melody and beat to the festival music. Each part in the ceremony rumbling awake and going quiet and repeating itself as the music grew longer.

"Looks like we were just in time, huh?"
The pair strode out of the shop, waving goodbye to the owner as they did so.
"CORRECT. IT IS TIME FOR THE FESTIVAL."
"Well what're we waitin' for? Let's go!" Tanya shouted as she climbed atop her noble steed.
"UNDERSTOOD."
And with that, M23 waded into the crowd.

Hiraku did not care about the reason behind the festival, all that mattered is that he was at the building office an- Hiraku stared at the door for sometime. He glanced at the sign that said, "Momentarily Closed for Festival Activities." He paused there, as he pulled off his glasses. He began rubbing his eyes and cleaning his glasses. He placed his glasses back on, as he adjusted them by the bridge of his nose. Hiraku continued staring at the door as the band played. He glanced at his briefcase for a few seconds before finally doing something else.

"CLOSED!? FOR A FESTIVAL!? WE HAD A MEETING AT THIS TIME! GWAAAAAAH!" Hiraku clenched his free hand as he began shaking uncontrollably. Hiraku quickly dashed out of the building as he went into the plaza proper. Stupid mongrels! Taking a BREAK! What do they think they are!? This business made a worse decision than my stupid son! Bah! As he entered the plaza Hiraku immediately searched for the business man who met the description of the one was to deal with. But as the crowd was so dense, and Hiraku realized that the man would insist on having a break, he instead searched for a Karaoke Bar, before he stared at a merchant who was selling a variety of various charms and goods. Hiraku stared at them for a bit. Hmm well I suppose as I can't do business yet. Hiraku had his right eye twitch as he continued glancing at the goods. I suppose I can start thinking about what to bring back to them. But I really need to calm my nerves. Yes, I just need to calm the nerves..

Hiraku continued searching for an open karaoke bar.

Bells began to ring. Wrasslin looked up to see the bells as a crowd of people walked past him, all seeming to go in the same direction. He followed the scurrying crowd like a man in an inner tube floating along the not-so-lazy river. "What's going on?" Wrasslin mumbled. He habitually struck a pose as the crowd carried him to the festival area, where there stood the priestess. Wrasslin nodded, understanding, in a way, what all the commotion was about.

Wrasslin eyed the statue. He had never seen anything like it. The elves back in his encampment used to pray to a god, but the shrine was built and carved of wood, overgrown with moss. His mentor worshiped a god of travel, often lighting an incense. Never, though, had Wrasslin ever seen such a gloriously built monument. He looked upon the statue in amazement. Still, he posed.

"It is an honor to meet you, Defendia." Said Freya. "It is a wonderful goal to become a great magic-user. I'm sure yo-"

The ringing of bells interrupted Freya's sentence. As people began to stop what they were doing and walk to the same place, Freya opted to follow them as well. She figured that the official start of the festival was the reason behind this. Why else wpuld evetyone be doing this? Seeing that the crowd became more uncomfortable, Freya looked for a way to follow them without being crushed. She found that the rooftops were not being put to much use.

"Defendia, would you like to come with me to see what's happening?"

The bells rang in the middle of Defendia being complemented. Figures something would interrupt another one of my few moments of being praised, ugh.

Being asked to follow Freya, she looked towards the large crowd of people, then back at Freya to respond. "I guess I can allow you to accompany me." She looked back at the crowd, seeing a man who was more dirt than skin. "But there is no way I'll sully myself by standing around all those commoners."

"I don't plan to be in that crowd either."

Freya took a moment to look at the crowd again. It was amazing they weren't burning each other alive with the combined body heat from the amount of people there. Was this event really that important? Some people were even being carried by the crowd...or was that sone sort of painted statue? Freya shook her head and pointed to the rooftops.

"I was planning on following them from the rooftops."

"The rooftops huh?"

Defendia weighed the pros and cons. On one hand, I look like a barbarian going from roof to roof. On the other hand, however, I get to rightfully place myself above all of them AND get a good view! The reason for the crowd forming didn't matter for her anymore, now she only cared to be above the common rabble, and the one that also stole her food.

"What are we waiting for then? To the rooftops!" She grabbed Freya's hand and ran off to try to find an area to reach the rooftops with, laughing all the while.

Freya was suddenly being dragged off by Defendia, acting quickly, she manipulated the armor puppet to follow. Defendia was laughing all the while. Freya thought that she really must have liked the thought of seeing something from a high place. Eventually, Freya caught up with Defendia's pace. She helped look for a way, and found a ladder that was used to set up decorations.

"We could use that ladder. It large enough to get to the roofs."

"Ladders? Preposterous! I'll just cast us a flight spell!"

Defendia took a deep breath. Remember what your teachers taught you. She started to incant. "Wind, I am the the one who invokes you wind, heed my call and grant us the power of flight!" Defendia threw her spell onto the ground, and the wind started to form around the two. The wind picked up, but was only able to at best blow a slightly strong breeze from under them, flipping up Defendia's dress.

"WAAAAAH!" Defendia yelled, trying to hold her dress down.

She still needs to practice.

Freya turned her head to Defendia and said, "Why don't we just climb the ladder?"

Freya proceeded to get the ladder herself, and lean it up against obe of the buildings.

"We should probably hurry. That crowd is getting larger and larger

Jack had gotten bored of stealing, for the moment at the very least. When the bells began to ring he made his way down to the plaza, only to stop when he saw the gathering crowd. Yeah, no, he could cut all the purses there without anyone noticing but he'd had his fill and wasn't about to stand in the middle of a million people (probably not a million), so he did the reasonable thing, audibly said "fuck that noise" and climbed up a nearby roof. He might've looked pretty dramatic and heroic-like perched up there but it just wasn't a look he could pull off, so he just seemed a bit creepy.
