Katawa Shoujo: School for the Disabled

High upon a moutain top, in a rural part of Japan sits a school for the considered "outcasts" of society. Yamaku Academy, a school for the disabled, helps students overcome their physical and minor mental disabilities so that they can learn to live a "normal" life. On the campus is all the amenities anyone could ever need, a gated community, classrooms only minutes away from dormitories, and a fully serviced 24 hour nursing station. While the academy itself sits isolated away from society, there are plenty of other activities that can be done off campus. Whether one wishes to walk down to the town below, or take the public transit to the nearest city, everything and anything is avaliable to our students. A new semester is upon us and we're excited to see new and returning students, welcome to a new year!

Rules

1. GM's rules are law, you break my rules, I break you. (not literally, that'd be ghastly)
2. No godmodding, I know there will be plenty of character interaction and I know that physical interactions will be a thing, that being said if you move another PC from place to place, or making them act egregiously without their permission, you are breaking my rule.
3. Highschoolers are not immune to cussing, this being said I will not have any sailors running amuck, keep it to yourself if it gets heavy (ie your character's head)
4. Per the rules of the site there will be no lemons (ie NSFW), keep it in the PM if anyone is planning on doing that.
5. Most importantly have fun, I'm pretty lenient about things.

Tsukimi is rather short, standing at a mere 5'1 and weighing over 125lbs, since she eats like a bird. Her hair is long, reaching her mid-back, and appears to be ink black in color, while her eye is a bright blue. Her glass eye is apparently incorrect, as it was colored green, but since she doesn't like showing it off so there is no way to confirm this. Rather curvy, Tsukimi hates to think about her weight, but appreciates the roundness it adds to her once hallow face. Her skin is fair and easily tanned. Normally likes to wear dresses and skirts.

Name:
Iki Tsukimi

Age:
Sixteen

Grade:
Second year

Disability:
Anophthalmia and Anxiety
(absence of one or both eyes, in this case, Tsukimi is missing her right eye)

Personality:
Tsukimi is best described as bright yet very troubled. She is generally quiet in a public setting out of fear of people finding her disorder to be hideous. Tries her best to appear normal, often covering her disability with plain eye patches as not to have people see her "mutation" as she calls it. Very studious, if not out and about she is someplace sunny, reading book after book after book with not much care about anything going on around her. When she is painting, Tsukimi gets a very concentrated look in her eye, and will more times then not ignore anyone who tries to talk to her. Open minded and stubborn, Tsukimi isn't afraid to speak up for her rights and the rights if others if she needs too, and will fight back if challenged. Proud, she refuses to cry or complain to anyone but herself, and if someone happens to see her shed a tear she will instantly turn to that person and instruct them to: "Forget that! I don't cry!". But what she does best is smile. Tsukimi, no matter what, will always try to keep smiling, even during one of her emotional scenes, just to make sure that no one feels uncomfortable around her.

However, her normally kind and cheery demeanor can fade instantly, especially if she is seen with out an eye patch or if it is dreary outside. Anxiety attacks are rare but intense, and Tsukimi absolutely hates to have people see her in such a weak state, which means that the attacks will only grow if seen. Rainy days are especially tough for her, and during days like this Tsukimi will refuse to leave her room, not even for classes.

Background:
Surprisingly, Tsukimi was born as a healthy child, with two eyes. Her family was large, consisting of three older siblings who loved her dearly, and a very supportive set of parents, and they didn't expect anything serious to happen to their cheery child. However, during a rainy day on Tsukimi's fifth birthday she suddenly lost vision in her right eye. After being rushed to the doctors and waiting for a long two hours, they explained that Tsukimi had a disorder called Degenerative Anophthalmia, an illness that would slowly take away Tsukimi's eye. Needless to say, they were shocked. They took her home, prepared her with an eye patch and a promise that they'd get her a new eye, but Tsukimi herself didn't even know what was going on.

Until she had her eye removed.

After that Tsukimi was ignored by her peers in school, and the ever looming fear of losing her other eye began to gleam brightly within her family. She gained slight anxiety, and grew to hate rainy days because they reminded her of the first time she lost her eye sight. The entire Iki family expected her to simply continue her life of being ignored in school and babied at home, until they found a solution. Yamaku High. A school for the physically challenged. It was perfect; Tsukmi could finally make friends with problems similar to her's, but Tsukimi wasn't so pleased. Oddly enough, she enjoyed her silent life, but after her parents and brothers and sisters insisting on it, saying it'll help with all her problems, she finally caved.

Other Info:
- Has a glass eye, but it is normally covered by a white medical eye-patch or, if she is feeling a bit fancier, a silken red sash that she wraps around her head.

- A skilled artist, Tsukimi can normally be found painting in the art room.

- During rainy days, Tsukimi will refuse to leave her dorm room, and at times even speak. She constantly looks in the mirror to check on her remaining eye as well.

- Easily tires, especially if she runs for too long.

- Has trouble reading things that are far away.

Tall at over six feet tall, wiry enough in build...face, from under his eye to his upper jaw, are made up of prosthetics. Application of latex, make up, and a few more things onto the bone grafts and upper jaw piece make up his face. There are a few small scars on the back of his hands...old defensive wound scars. Scared of having his non-face exposed, and not having something perfectly handy...Junpei actual grew his hair out in anticipation of such an event, a temporary curtain to shield him away from others, if it comes to that. His 'face' may be considered attractive by some, but it has nary any other expression other than indifference, due to lack of actual muscles...most find the indifference intimidating. His left eye is half blind, and has difficulty focusing on certain features...so, something he squints hard to get his left eye to at least work a little with his right...but sometimes people misinterpret the look as some form of death glare.

Name:
Junpei Yamauchi

Age:
17

Grade (1st/2nd/3rd year):
2nd Year

Disability:
Half-Blind in One Eye
More than 75% of his Face is Expensive Prosthetics

Personality:
Simply put, Junpei is terribly shy…he’s actually quite afraid of being rejected, ‘cause he knows how well that went last time. Terrified of having people see him without his face on, he also has the obvious trust issues, and for a time he had been tutored in martial arts as a form of self-defence. Otherwise, people who get to know him well enough will see that he is actually quite an empathetic, selfless youth.

Background:
Some people get a new mother, some people get evil step mothers…life, am I right? His father was a retired guitarist who remarried when Junpei was aged four, unfortunately, his step mother was highly possessive and didn’t want anyone getting in the way of her love. And so, borrowing a hammer from a neighbour with the intention to ‘fix a problem’, his step-mother tried to kill him at age five. She only managed to smash the boy’s face into a pulp before his father entered into the scene and stopped her.
Junpei survived, by his face didn’t…they managed to save his eyes, one of which became half-blinded, but the section of bones, the entirety of his nose and cheeks, upper jaw…all of it was completely destroyed, and at the time, there was no great option for his face. For ten years after that, he had been home tutored in sign language since speaking without an upper jaw was hard for others to understand, his face covered by a custom mask. Afraid of being harmed by others again, Junpei also learned as many forms of self-defence as he could.
Throughout this, the boy was very lonely…even with the constant help of his father, and the tutors going in and out of the household…Junpei was very lonely. And so, after some research, the faceless boy decided to settle for some new facial prosthetics…his father paid for having the expensive bone grafts added into the boy’s face, and then paid for the equally expensive custom prosthesis to be made. Bone grafts, custom prosthetics (upper jaw, latex coverings), and more expensive make up products…and Junpei finally had a face again after ten whole years.
Due to feeling insecure about his lack of speaking skills, his father even hired a tutor to teach him for a year, along with a make-up artist to teach him about properly applying realistic makeup…but with having a new face came the elevation of insecurity of the times he didn’t have it on in front of people, all the way to his panic attacks here or there. But eventually, at age sixteen, he finally attended his first year at Yamaku. Though he may not have made many friends that year, he really enjoyed the experience.

Other Info:
Always carries a large make up and prosthetics case with him.
Has panic attacks every once in a while, but usually only when someone sees him without his prosthetics on.
Knows sign language like the back of his hand.
Due to extensive facial prosthetics, he is unable to make facial expression…which makes him seem intimidating to others.
Master in a number of martial arts.
Sits out for a number of classes due to the possibility of ruining his make-up.
Can’t eat solid foods, since they can possibly dislodge his faux upper jaw…which he’d have to rush out of the room to adjust, which would lead to a number of other things needing to be fixed as well.
Father has quite a bit of money from his successful music career.

Name: Tomohina "Tomo" Mizukimura

Age: 16

Grade: 10th (2nd year)

Disability: Blind

Personality:
Tomo is very mature for her age, but she can be rather cute and sweet in her calm moods. A kind and caring person, she loves to help others as much as she can, but often gets a bit depressed when she needs help herself. Highly intelligent and well mannered, she can be a prefect little lady when she wants to, but more often around close friends she gets less formal. A very melodic person, since she highly values sound, her voice is sweet and clear. If you can't find her, she's probably somewhere were there is a lot of sunlight and she will probably be singing or reading. Tomo tries to push herself past her blindness, disliking her own weakness and will often get herself into a bit of trouble. But for the most part she will be able to think herself right back out of it. And she very much does not like to be pitied. In fact it sort of makes her angry.

Background:
Her western-style house is quite grand, with several maids serving the household. Her mother is a kimono fashion designer and her father runs international businesses as a big time CEO. So often Tomo was with nursemaids or tutors when she was growing. It was a very boring place, if you ask Tomo. Not allowed to touch many of the things in the house, it was lonely living there as a only child. But the garden was wonderful. Some many different kinds of flowers, and the gardeners would always tell her about them. It was her favorite place in the world.

But when Mama and Papa decided it was time for her to get a proper education and try to be more social they sent her off to a private boarding school. It wasn't much fun there at all. Many students were hard to talk to and they didn't seem to like Tomo at all for some reason. So sweet Tomo who never asked for anything, asked to be transferred to another school. A school for people like her. Where people would understand her. And so her parents did. They transfer Tomo to this new school for the disabled.

Name: Mariko Matsushita.
Age: Sixteen.
Grade: 2nd year
Disability: Congenital Rubella, German measles during her gestation. She was born with it, and it has caused heart problems (corrected with surgery) eye and ear troubles (mostly corrected with surgery and a hearing aid/large print books/reading glasses, although she still takes pills to control her retinopathy.) and a touch of asperger's syndrome.

Personality: Mariko tends to be cheerful, if a little relaxed and passive. She has problems with social skill, and can tend to trip over her own words when she gets caught up in trying to explain things. When thinking, she had a slight tendancy to have thoughts in a rush of quasi-logic, but doesn't usually let it show. She's not a sporty type, even though sports like Hockey and Hurling appeal to her. Mariko adores black comedy, but is clever enough to keep some of the nastier gags to herself. Mariko is a bit of an europhile, and has a marked interest in the second world war. Mariko scores good grades in the humanties, and has ambitions to go into art criticism, but so far only submits wordy reviews under videos on Nico Nico Douga.

Background: Mariko was conceived an born in unusual circumstances. Her mother had always been a strong member of japan's thriving anti-vaccination community, as well as a frequent flyer for her job as a western correspondant for a news channel. When Mariko was born, and almost immediately rushed into intensive care to treat a semi-serious valvular condition in an almost third-world country in south america, her mother was, understandably, shocked. Mariko doesn't blame her mother, though, although she does hold the guilt over her at times, jokingly. She was never the happy gurgling bundle on joy that most cliched books try to convince us most babies are like, but grew up close to her stay-at-home father, a devoted family man who left his career as a woodworker to take care of her until she was old enough to start attending school. Her experience there was wonderful, but at the age of 10, her degrading retinas made schoolwork impossible, and she dropped out of her class and was forced to attend a school for the vision-impaired. She's attended one year at Yamaku.

Other Info: Can see. Couldn't before surgery on her eyes, and probably won't if her retinopathy spreads further, but she can see for now.
Has one eye slightly smaller then the other, and has had corrective eyelid surgery to help this.
Is pretty good at origami, and is currently practicing how to make an origami biplane.
Can't balance to save her life.

Yea I don't really have a problem with this CS, I like the character and the personality. The only thing I would advise you to do is to specify her condition in the disability section, while it seems pretty clear that you're focusing on the cataracts and the blindness, I looked up the disease and found...this list.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ said
Symptoms in the infant may include:

Cloudy corneas or white appearance to pupil
Deafness
Developmental delay
Excessive sleepiness
Irritability
Low birth weight
Intellectual disability
Seizures
Small head size
Skin rash at birth

So what I would suggest is to either further develop your character based on the list of symptoms here or if you're sticking with just blindness, then do just that and say your character had early onset cataracts.

Other than that, you're accepted.

@RyuNoHime, don't worry too much about your lonely 1st year life, you'll have a friend soon enough, Lennon just needs to revise his CS.

Man isn't this one just a case of... "bad juju"

...puns aside, accepted.

So friends, attention!

We are at a current total count of 10 players, 4 males, 6 females, there are two more slots still open (yes I've limited it to 12). Depending on how quickly Lennon can hash out his CS will determine if the IC will be up later tonight or early tomorrow morning Eastern Time. I don't want people to be afraid and think I'm trying to rush things, I just don't want the interest to die down like last time. If you feel an IC up tonight/tomorrow is too fast, feel free to voice your opinion, but I will only delay the IC post if there's enough people thinking I'm rushing things.

Other than that, I just want some fun and dedication. Who's ready to get there krunk on?!

Name
Anselmo "Elmo" O'Dell

Age
15

Grade (1st/2nd/3rd year)
1st Year

Disability
Susac's syndrome

Personality:
TBR

Background:
Elmo was born in Ireland although he never stayed long enough to call it his homeland. Both his parents travelled around the world on a weekly basis since their professions demanded them so and he followed since he was an infant. He was homeschooled therefore he never really got the chance to sharpen his social skills, something which impacted his life greatly. However, everything changed when he woke up one day and started screaming while holding his head. After lots of tests and thousands spent in the best hospitals of the world, the diagnosis was clear; Elmo suffered from Susac's Syndrome, a disease so rare that modern medicine didn't even know what caused it.

After the grim news, 13 year old Elmo moved to Japan -his father's homeland- along with his parents who finally decided to settle down in order for him to adapt to his situation and learn how to cope with it. Nowadays, he and his parents finally decided that it is time for him to take his first steps towards the world outside the sheltered life he had until now.

Truth is, things will be hard for a teen boy who forgets every single thing that he experienced in the last 24 hours every time he falls asleep. More than hard, provided that memory loss is just the most bizarre part of his condition.

Other Info:

-Always carries his digital voice recorder with him in order to take notes on anything and anyone he feels he should remember next time he wakes up. His laptop where notes on everything regarding his life and condition are stored is also quite valuable as it is the first thing he checks every morning he wakes up in an unknown place and the last thing he updates before falling asleep.
Regarding the ''Personality'' part, am not really sure about him therefore I'd like to shape him as the RP progresses. If that is something you won't allow, just say so and I'll see what I can do.

Not quite sure about the medical accuracy of susac here, given that it resembles MS with hearing loss.

As well as what the guy before me said.

I think that an accurate portayal of susac would be accepted into Yamaku, though, what with the hearing loss and motor control difficulties and all

And the line between neural and mental problems is pretty blurry, anyway.

Name:Azusa Hitomi

Age:15

Grade:1st

Disability:
Amputated right leg

Panic Disorder:
A type of anxiety disorder that affects both adults and children, panic disorders lead to several, recurrent panic attacks. Most of these attacks are sudden and are triggered off without any warning. Common symptoms include intense anxiety, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, trembling and a feeling of intense, uncontrollable fear.

Personality:She can be rather cheerful around other but doesn't like to go out onto the streets much because of her accident. She runs sometimes with a special made prosthetic to keep herself healthy. Her panic attacks makes her want to be alone at times making it difficult to interact with certain people in general.

Background:She was born with a panic disorder making her tremble in fear for totally nothing, Just laying down onto the ground and starting to cry of fear. Seeing how people die in her mind and keeps on thinking it is real. The medications they had for her didn't work very well it would mostly stop the panic attacks but it would trigger some sort of symptom. They however gave her some experimental drugs, It did work very well she would only keep using more of it till she felt out of this world what wasn't the best thing. They stopped with the medication but she kept using more drugs she finally stopped after almost dying twice from an overdose with some help of her family.

She got bullied for not attending class much because of her panic disorder. She was placed into a special class on her school where people that weren't really normal where kept and the lessons would go slower and would keep an eye out for the ones that had more problems then just keeping up. She however hated this class and didn't want to do it anymore she and her parent filled in an application for another school where she might be seen more normal.

Walking towards a new life and a new school she got hit by a car accident. She found herself in the hospital with one of her lower legs completely missing it got crushed to pieces by the cars and needed to be amputated right away to not make it any worse. She got used to a wheelchair and not long after that she got a high tech prosthetic for replacement she would wear knee high socks everyday just to keep the ugly thing out of sight. After a short while she would attended school again with no luck. Rumors would go around and she got bullied already in the first week. She got replaced to a special school for disabled children hoping that she could make some new friends in this school.

Other Info:You can hear her prosthetics slightly moving because it is computer controlled but it can almost not be seen through her knee socks.
Her Panic attacks occur more frequently when she is near moving traffic
Her prosthetic is highly advanced but she still couldn't afford anymore then her parents had at the moment

Susac's looks like a neurological disorder to me. If you do a bit of research into it, it's a form of angiopathy. So it's a disease in the brain's blood vessels. And it can certainly cause physical symptoms. In my worthless and easily ignored opinion Elmo would easily qualify for Yamaku. Probably even more so than Neru.
