“Captain Akimoto, sir,” his third seat, Hashimoto Daichi, called with a hastened voice. He was bowed deeply and remained there until he was finished relaying the message. “Captain Nakahara of the 8th Division has reported sighting a Vasto Lorde. Captain-Commander Kuroda demands you protect her personally.”

The papers piled upon his desk. He’d requested all documents from his Dojo and the Academy be sent to his barracks, since he was, more or less, locked up there. He and Yuzuki were always busy with paperwork, but they worked so well together he assumed they were keeping up due to the stagnation of the piles’ heights. Still, he always felt a twitch in his abdomen when looking at his office.

His hands deftly shifted papers around the desk. “Thank you, Hashimoto-san. Please fetch Yuzuki-chan.” He commanded politely and the high-seated Shinigami fell in a bow and quickly exited the office. A hell butterfly was left upon his desk in the case he would need backup.

In one quick motion, his body spun up and around the chair while flinging his Haori onto his back. His Zanpakuto was then tied into the white sash keeping up his hakama. Once out the door, his Shunpo, which could barely be categorized as such, showed his image stretching across the roofs of the Seireitei. His Ken’in Ho was unique to him and most knew who was travelling in such a manner.

The drums and gongs were sounded. The sighting of a Vasto Lorde meant grave ill for any single Captain. He hoped the two of them would be enough to drive it back.

As he neared, the sounds of the battle were eerie and almost frightening. Screeches unlike any he’d heard before vibrated through the air and it sounded as if there were multiple of the same enemies in the area. Captain Nakahara would know the source better than any considering her information-gathering skills. What he didn’t expect was her to have her Bankai active when he reached them.

She was obviously on a losing end of the battle. The Vasto Lorde looked completely unharmed and the Captain was covered in cuts and gouges. Her uniform was in tatters and he knew he couldn’t have come any later. She immediately spotted him and he rushed in at the cloaked creature. She fell back in order to heal herself with her limited skills in healing Kido.

When Akimoto met her with his Zanpakuto, she merely took the attack but was knocked back a distance. He was surprised to see there was no damage done to her cloak. Its Hierro stood up to his attack easily. Without pause, he rushed it again, aiming for the blackness under the hood. Its arm rose to parry the block and Akimoto’s Zanpakuto was knocked back enough to warrant an second strike. She flicked it away without difficulty. Nakahara approached from behind, intent on stabbing the creature. Both he and the Vasto Lorde saw this and Akimoto attempted a quick slash followed up by an Iktoranku. It seemed to go for a block behind and in front of it, but then noted Akimoto’s follow-up and had to use both hands to defend itself. It was pushed back into Nakahara’s blade, piercing it though its chest.

The Vasto Lorde’s hand emerged from its cloak and grasped her neck. Tendrils flowed from the hood and began to lash at her face and upper body. Akimoto charged once more with his Zanpakuto sheathed and went for a Sōkutsu. Its other hand rose to block but was crushed under the power. She released Nakahara who fell limp onto the ground. It took the time Akimoto and Nakahara met in order to regenerate its lost limb.

“She is Chillida Temmor. She matches you in physical combat and can match you with weapons, hers being her hair,” she tried to explain through the intense pain she felt. Akimoto’s Iyashi no Namida from Taiyō no Fujō Fenikkusu began to flow slowly onto Captain Nakahara and heal what injuries it could. She accepted it but looked as if she was ready to embrace death. “She has three screams: Fear, Sway, and Calm. They petrify, paralyze, and control. She’s the one who’s been controlling the lost Shinigami.” She coughed up blood and whined from the pain. “She’s as fast as I am, but not at all nimble. You can overwhelm her with your Reiatsu.”

With that, her life escaped her and she laid dead on the ground. Akimoto’s body erupted in an intense orange energy that burned the ground around them and the dead Captain’s body. Chillida screeched, but under that screech was a taunt. “You have little hope here. Allow yourself to follow your friend and pain will not know you in this fight.”

There were two voices saying the same thing at different pitches and tempos. He was thrown off by the level of fear he felt, but easily accepted it and charged at the creature. Her tendrils sprayed from her head and stretched further than he thought possible. His Zanpakuto wrapped them around its dulled blade and pulled hard. She screamed loudly, but not from pain. His ears burned and he winced. Her decrepit hand formed some kind of fist and pounded it into Akimoto’s chest. His Reiatsu burned her and she screeched from pain this time, but Akimoto could hardly stand from the volume and pitch of it.

Trying to push through the pain, he charged her with an Ikkotsu, aiming for the weakened hand and hoping to crush it as before. But she disappeared as he reached her. Her image than appeared all around him. She was indeed quick, but she wouldn’t be able to get past his defense. The copies released their tendrils in order to strike at Akimoto, but his Reiatsu burst around him, burning the tendrils before they could reach him, and now held onto Taiyō no Fenikkusu no Owari. She screamed again and Akimoto had to cover his ears this time, though it didn’t seem to help. It made his bones tremble and quake from within him.

Under the scream, he could hear “calm” being said slowly and frighteningly. His bones started to vibrate violently until they locked shut. The screaming ceased and she then whispered in her double voice. “Ah, Captain Akimoto. I know you well. Nakahara prevented your death until now. You will feel how your subordinates feel before they are devoured by my spawn.” A dark cackle resounded but Akimoto responded by releasing all the Reiatsu he could in a single short burst.

She was seared and pushed back far and his bones were once again under his own control. Iyashi no Namida could not heal the wide aches throughout his body and, instead, continued to swirl around him. He rushed her, bring his sword up over his head and crashing down onto her body. She slipped away before he could realize and a large crater was formed when his Zanpakuto met the ground. Again, her images formed all around him and before she had the chance to cast her spell, he burst out his Reiatsu, burning her again and knocking her down. Through this burst he moved and brought down his blade, that could hardly be called such, and brought it down on her torso. It cracked and then shattered, revealing a ghastly form that was once human but long dead. Her tendrils whipped from her head which he grabbed in one hand and pulled to bring her further pain.

Though she screeched, Akimoto brought his blade up once more to impale the exposed body. Her hands grasped the blade, threatening to shatter it. Through the screams, he could hear the world “calm” being whispered once more. It was difficult to drown out the high pitch, but easy enough once done a couple times. He burst out his reiatsu, crushing her body and burning it in the process. Her open mouth took in some of the spiritual pressure and burned her throat, making it difficult to scream for the moment before regenerating. As he attempted to yank his Zanpakuto free, she kicked him back. Her Sonido brought her to a standing position but she was clenching her exposed torso in pain and wheezing in her double voice.

Akimoto had to keep the pressure on and charged her again. She had to deflect his blade with her arms and protect her body. She hadn’t the energy to attack with her tentrils or Sonido away and, instead, focused her reiryoku in regenerating her lost Hierro. It would take much longer as she defended but she knew he couldn’t keep up his reiatsu bursts. He could still perform Ikkotsu at times. The more he performed them, the closer to shattering one of her arms and ultimately her defeat he was.

But during a small pause between the two, he sent a Hell Butterfly to his Lieutenant, Yuzuki, to say he had the Vasto Lorde on the defense but wouldn’t be able to keep up for long and requested backup. Unfortunately for him, she had already done so and Hollow began to pour into the area. He immediately enacted Shin Sekatsu and with it, vaporizing hundreds of them due to the release of his Reiatsu. Once his showy release was done, the Vasto Lorde was nowhere to be found, but the Hollow were to be eradicated. His wings erupted when contacted with Hollow and his fists and feet worked to disintegrate them where they stood. The ground was scorched and empty. There was no sign of fatalities, especially the body of the late Captain Nakahara.

The wings were almost completely molted when he sealed his Zanpakuto and fell to his knees. Yuzuki arrived shortly after. “Captain Nakahara is dead. Please tell the Captain-Commander. Also, send the Fourth to collect me and the Eleventh to hold this ground.” His head dropped to the ground and fell into a conscious sleep. The other Divisions were quick to act and he was retrieved and healed while the area was fortified with troops.

A week later, he was summoned by the Captain-Commander for a formal briefing. “Captain-Commander,” he said with a deep bow.

“Taiki-kun,” she said in her ancient voice, “what did you discover.”

“The Vasto Lorde I encountered was more than enough to take out Captain Nakahara, one of the best Shinigami of the Gotei. Her name is Chillida Temmor and her weapon is her voice. Captain Nakahara believed she to be cause of the capture of our Shinigami. She has three different screams, one to petrify or paralyze, one to knock unconscious, and one to control the body. He weakness is interrupting the word necessary to cast these spells. However, her normal voice, of which she seems to have several, is disarming alone and her ability to scream brings pain to the most resilient of Shinigami. Her hair also works as deadly quick tendrils to lash at opponents, and this is how Captain Nakahara died. Her hierro withstands some of my strongest attacks but her Reiatsu and Reiryoku are poor, from what I could tell. She’s also just as fast as Captain Nakahara was. I managed to shatter a large portion of the hierro on her chest, but she was able to defend the tender insides without issue if only because of my exhausted state.”

“Thank you, Taiki-kun. I will relay this information to the Eighth and you are to return to your barracks for further rest.”

“Were we able to hold that district?”

“Yes, and we have expanded our reach since then,” she said without smiling.

He looked down slightly solemnly and then bowed deeply before leaving.

“Get me Yasu-chan,” he heard her say before he was out the doors. Akimoto knew she was working with the Noble Houses if not within the Seireitei itself. She was as busy as any of the other Captains left. His own curiosity had him wonder the need of her so urgently, but it wasn’t his business to mettle, so he continued walking toward his barracks where he was met by Yuzuki.

The sixth division, the enforcement division, among the Gotei 13, it was the duty of these Shinigami to uphold the law of Soul Society. They brought honour against traitors, they brought justice to the fouled, and they brought errant criminals to trial. They were the pinnacle of justice, honour and righteous pride: and there job was, by many at least, considered among the most exciting and duty-bound in all of Soul Society’s hierarchy. Since the beginning of the war with the Hollows,

…Sadly, today was not a day of honour, or pride, or justice. Today, Akiyama Yasu was having to deal with someone else’s crap…literally. One of her seated officers had been called out to the noble district in regards to what was reported as a ‘gross defiance of Seireitei’s laws.’ An hour after she dispatched the young officer, he returned relaying that the nobles had asked to deal with the captain directly.

“So let me get this straight. Unomaru Aki’s dog is accused of defecating on Akinomu Yuyu’s vegetable garden, while Unomaru Aki disputes this claim because, and I quote, ‘Chi-chi has a sore tum-tum, and has not left the house all day.’ Is this correct?”

Akiyama Yasu was rubbing her index finger and thumb against the bridge of her nose, massaging it as she tried very hard not to shout at the idiots that made up the lower-noble houses. It irked her that her time was wasted on dealing with such cases as this, especially considering this was more of the duty of the Third division, but she knew that it was important for the Gotei to maintain good relationships with the nobles. After all, they provided a great deal of services to the Gotei: including food, fine goods and the most consistent portion of the new Shinigami recruits. Noble houses produced a lot of Shinigami, and they needed every one they could get in the Hollow war.

However, even though maintaining relations was important: Akiyama Yasu’s patience soon wore thin as more and more of her time was being wasted. She should be out fighting the Hollow incursion, or at the very least, doing some of the stacks of paperwork in her office. Reports of a particularly large Garganta had her worried, and rumour had it that this Garganta had resulted in the mobilisation of the Eighth division captain, and here Yasu was: talking about dog shit and vegetable gardens.

Noting the nod of the two nobles, and the apologetic face of the seated officer, Yasu sighed heavily. “Because there is no evidence to prove either claim, I will have to insist that the accusation is dropped. To prevent this case from escalating further, the Unomaru family will fund half of a 5-foot high fence around the vegetable garden; the Akinomu family will fund the other half and go about its construction.”

The sound of complaining nobles was suddenly made much louder by the Captain’s declaration. Yasu was willing to listen to the complaints, if only because it was her job. The arrival of a worried looking Shinigami changed the tone rather rapidly, though, as everyone turned their attention to the bowing messenger. Yasu strolled closer, assuming the message to be intended for her, not the nobles. As the message was delivered, her face shifted and became darker: much more intense.

“You’ve done well. Deliver the message onwards to the forth division and the Captain-Commander.” After the few seconds, The Shinigami shunpo’d away, and Yasu turned her back to the nobles: the bold symbol of the sixth division seeming to radiate with the intensity she exuded. “I’m assuming there will be no further issues?”

One of the nobles strolled forward, wagging his finger at the captain and saying it was Yasu’s job to find a better resolution for the ‘grave injustice.’ At that, the Captain turned around with a very obvious anger on her face; her Reiatsu suddenly flared with her growing fury.

"Actually, my job is to protect Seireitei, and to protect every single soul inside it. As I waste my time with you, a Vasto Lorde has invaded Soul Society and is now rampaging through the streets. If I am lucky, I can get there in time to save lives! Now, you will comply with my Seated officer, or I will have you dragged into imprisonment for impeding a captain's duties!"

Without giving the fool any more of her time, Yasu started to shunpo away from the scene and towards the chaos in deep Soul Society. Her speed was well known inside the Gotei, and she would need it more now than ever. The Shinigami who delivered the message had apparently been of the Eighth Division, and had sought out the nearest strong Reiatsu in order to help his captain. Yasu had been the most obvious, and had been the one sought out.

She had no official orders from the Captain-Commander, but she could hardly sit by and ignore the plea of a Shinigami, or the danger posed by a Vasto Lorde. She picked up her pace, feeling the comfortable weight of her Zanpakuto at her hips.

When she arrived though, she was far too late. The Eighth captain was on the floor, unmoving, and the Fifth division captain was being tended by his lieutenant.

She had failed in her duty to protect Seireitei.
A week later, Yasu was sitting in her barracks, multi-tasking with the completion of a pile of paperwork as well as listening to the latest reports on new, unseated Shinigami in her division. Only a few were showing any real promise, which had her worried. Someone’s lieutenant was going to have to step up to the plate and ascend to the mantle of Eighth division captain soon: what if it were her lieutenant? Would she be able to cope with remodelling the entire structure of her division? Oh god, the amount of paperwork she’d have to fill out…

Thoughts of paperwork were cast aside as the Fifth seat of the First division entered her office, bowing down respectfully. Soon, Yasu was exiting her own office with new orders from the Captain-Commander herself. She was thrilled by the call for a number of reasons: In a slight amount, she was glad to be away from the paperwork if only temporarily; but more importantly, she was ready to strike back at the Hollows. She numbered Captain Nakahara as one of her friends. That lost friend left a hole, and she longed to plug it with revenge against the Hollow who took her life away.

She was bowing before the Captain-Commander within two minutes of receiving the message, having left the seated officer in her dust.

Lieutenant Yuzuki bowed deeply before her Captain. “Captain Akimoto,” she greeted.

“Lieutenant Ueshima,” he nodded his head back at her.

She was glad he was back. It was clear more internal and Reiryoku-based damage had occurred during his fight with the Vasto Lorde. She was surprised it took him a whole week to recover, but she’d known him to suffer such injuries before. Perhaps it was miraculous it only took a week. The train of thought was on a short track, however, since she was determined to get back to business.

“The higher seated officers have been drilling the lower seats vigorously. Many of the lower seats have been stations throughout the Rukongai sooner than expected. The Academy seems to be doing well enough without you.”

He looked at the stacks of paper on his desk and sighed. “It’s not like the Academy doesn’t hear from me or that I don’t have a hand in their goings-on,” he said, touching one of the stacks with his index finger that was designated to be from the Academy. He also thought that Yuzuki was one to discipline hard if one wasn’t training down to their bones. He figured they were afraid of her going to the bone and thought it better for their help if they did it themselves.

“Any urgent matters I should know about?” he asked plainly as he scanned across his desk while sitting in his chair.

“During the past week, Captain-Commander Kaito has been attempting to gain access to the relics of the Noble Houses. Rumors say it’s been largely unsuccessful due to your most recent success on the battlefield.”

He looked at her with cold eyes. He’d failed protecting Captain Nakahara, and he’d resented her calling the Rukongai a battlefield. She spoke most plainly, and this was usually quite harsh. But there were times she’d cross the line into offensive and unfeeling. She knew when this was because of the look he’d give her, when usually he’d just brush it off or accept it. She didn’t flinch from the glare, for she was far too strong-willed for that, but she looked down and walked toward her own desk across from his.

Akimoto went through the “Noble” stack on his desk. It was, understandably, quite a short stack considering he didn’t have much to do with the Houses themselves. If it wasn’t for his Dojo and relations with the Yukihiro House, the stack would be non-existent.

There was a personal letter to him. Only Isao-dono would send formal letters. It detailed the numbers of his own ranks and how they were progressing well enough in that he, personally, felt little need to break his own code and submit to using his Sensou no Me. Regardless of the fact that it was most appropriate and, arguably, imperative that he use it, his own pride made it so he couldn’t be coerced to use it even with a blade at his throat. It wasn’t the first time the man’s pride hindered the health and progress of the Gotei, but Akimoto hadn’t the mind or lack of ethics to bring this up to his long-time friend.

He began to scrawl out a letter to the Seventh Division containing only the basic information concerning Yuzuki Isao’s stance on the matter of his Family Relic. Akimoto would have been surprised if Captain Nakamura was able to get a face-to-face meeting with the head. Assuming success in this matter, he went on with his own personal opinion on the matter. He wrote “Personally, I would be surprised to see Yuzuki Isao-dono to submit to using the Sensou no Me. I believe the way in which we could hope to obtain it is through the Central 46 considering our restricted authority over the Noble Houses.”

He flung the paper over his desk and across the room to Yuzuki. He used his Reiatsu to keep it aloft without burning the parchment. This was merely a test that he could control his Reiatsu as easily than before the battle. His body still felt sore, almost numb, when using Reiatsu in such a way. He didn’t know whether to work through it or listen to the Fourth Division and keep from using his Reiatsu unnecessarily for the rest of the month.

“Please copy that and send it to Captains Nakamura and Matsuoka.”

He figured the two had already begun plans to go above Isao’s head, but Akimoto’s “permission” would have given them more cause to pursue further.

“Ah, Yasu-chan, please come closer.” The Captain-Commander’s voice was old and hollow but still had traces of softness and gentleness. She was referred to as “Grandmother” or “Sobo” for good reason.

“As you know the Seventh Division quite closely, I was wanted your opinion on appointing your Lieutenant, Saito Hiroko, to the position of Seventh Division Captain. I know times are difficult, dear, but the lack of the Tenth and Twelfth Captains has put much strain on us already.” She paused to breathe and take a sip of her tea. “I understand she has a talent for organization and also problem-solving. I’ve read all her accomplishments and her capabilities and am impressed. I’ve discussed this with the Central 46 and they have agreed to expedite the process of ascending to Captain with your expressed permission.” She smiled her old and wrinkly smile.

Taking the Captain-Commander’s invitation, Yasu walked into the room and slowly lowered herself onto her knees, back as straight as the shaft of a spear, opposite the Captain-Commander, Yasu felt the same daunting feeling she always felt when in the same room as Kaito Kuroda. It was as if sharing a room with the woman compressed her under the weight and scope of the individual opposite her.

Not that she would show it. Yasu appeared as comfortable and easy-going as she could, and a small mug of tea was placed before her, which she cupped in both hands. So far, the conversational tone had been much different to the one she had expected and, dare she say it, hoped for. Compared to the call for war that she had predicted from the mighty elder, the conversation had somehow begun to focus on the potential of the Sixth division’s lieutenant, her lieutenant. In truth, it was important that a new captain come forward to fill in some of the holes that had developed in the years of fighting, yet Yasu couldn’t help but feel the timing was off. A friend and captain had been slain, and Yasu sought retaliation; revenge, even.

She bit her tongue though, knowing full well that Kuroda surely had something in mind for Yasu other than her opinions on a potential captain. Taking a sip of the tea, this was bitterer than she’d like, Akiyama Yasu finally spoke up. “Her talent for organisation is second to none, Kuroda-dono, as is her skills as a Shinigami. In truth, losing her will be a sad day indeed.” She smiles at the small joke, trying to make light of the fact she was going to lose one of her most trusted officers and a great help when it came to paperwork. “Still, she is a quality Shinigami, and I would put my reputation on stake for her: if you think the promotion is best for the Gotei and for Seireitei.”

Saito Hiroko’s loss would hurt the Sixth division, but it would help Soul Society. Saito Hiroko’s place as lieutenant had never even been close to contested, thanks to her prowess. Perhaps the freeing up of her Lieutenant’s seat would inspire some competition in her division? One could only hope so. The progress of the recruits and even her seated officers had stagnated heavily since the war’s beginning. Combine that and the fact that her training time had been replaced by paperwork made it impossible to help tutor any of the prospects personally: another thing she had depended on Saito Hiroko for.

Alas, losing Hiroko would not be the end of the world, as she made out. She would adapt, she would adjust, and she would simply have to train a new Shinigami to take her place. It was a simple enough thing, really.

“On a different note, Kuroda-dono, I was hoping you had come to a decision about the Vasto Lorde that managed to slay Captain Nakahara. The sixth division can be ready to hunt down the monster within an hour.”
