Hailstorm
Character Sheets Thread TitanPad for Collab Posts ACCEPTING ALL THE PEOPLE! --(OOC is a WIP, and will continually be altered/added to)-- Genres and Themes: Science Fantasy, Post-Calamity, Action, Horror, Psychological, Supernatural
~~The Premise~~ Seventeen years ago, this world and another collided violently. Thousands of stone pillars rained down from the skies, spelling the end of an era. These "Hailstones" landed in the center of every major city in the world, settling with relative grace despite their size and fall and causing minimal destruction. At first, the world was confused and scared, unsure of the future this phenomenon would bring. Theories, rumors, and talk of conspiracy spread like wildfire as humanity sought the answers to their many questions. Mankind gazed into these otherworldly towers and asked, "What will happen next?" The answer was, "Catastrophe." Almost overnight, crime skyrocketed. Curiosity eroded into insanity. People living in hail-stricken areas became unusually violent, and many claimed to be hearing strange voices and seeing figures in the corners of their eyes. Schizophrenic symptoms exploded throughout populated areas and increased in severity. Riots broke out for no particular reason and people killed one another randomly on the streets. Numerous government entities dissipated after the officials in every capitol went mad. Eventually the world seemed to fall into a state of pure chaos. And it got worse. They became Lost. Men, women, and children decayed into little ore than psychotic carnivorous beasts. The original panic and violence became something else--something primal. Black veins showed though their grayed skin and claws of bone peeked through their fingertips. They ruthlessly hunted down any who remained and picked their bones clean. The more they ate, the more twisted and deformed they became. Some grew talons and fangs, while others gained the ability to instantly morph parts of their bodies. What were once humans became demented human hunters. Rational thought had no semblance in their minds: They only sought to devour. Before long, people recognized the source of the deranged malady as the Hailstones themselves. Somehow their very presence devolved the people around them into crazed animals. The closer they got to the pillars, the more berserk they became. Before falling completely to depravity, people escaped from metropolitan areas and cut off any exits they could on the way out. Time passed, people regrouped, and wounds healed--well, most of them. Few emerged from the end of the world unscathed, and nearly all carried a scar of some kind--be it mental or physical. Some, however, were affected expressly by the sickness the Hailstones brought with them. They are called the Burdened, but are known almost universally as mutants, freaks, and crazies. Those who survived sane found solace in self-reliant communities farthest from the ruins of civilization and wandered through the spaces between. Military remnants set up walled-off "Safe Zones" that required psychological profiling for entry. As society recovered, like-minded individuals grouped together and once again spoke of "ideals", "hope", and "the future". Before long, people rallied for the return of democracy and established rights, while others chose to fight against the discrimination of Burdened peoples affected by the Hail. As time drew on, these groups became factions, and grew and developed tiers of membership and intent. Eventually, they claimed territory and began fighting one another on occasion. Colonization soon became militarization as each faction gained support and power. Before long, humanity found itself at an impasse in this strange new world gridlocked by convictions of the Past, the Present, and the Future. As we fight amongst ourselves, what still lurks in the ruins of the bygone civilization? If humankind can't find peace with itself, how can it quell the madness that still lingers at the brink? ~The Madness~

At its base, this RP will have one basic rule: Don't be a dick. If you don't get the general idea of what "being a dick" is, you probably shouldn't be here. However, I would still prefer all applicants read the rules of not being a dick below:
NOTE: All RPs I have run before have been in the Casual section, so my rules might seem a bit heavy-handed. However, because I am super paranoid, I would appreciate it if all applicants read them thoroughly. Please don't run away. Please?

Hello there! As you can probably tell, I wasn't in the interest check, but I hope that doesn't prevent me from attempting to join. I was just a little late to the party, but I'm here now and I'm pretty interested. I've thought up a pretty decent character design as well, so I hope I'll get to apply. I have a quick question, though. Is there going to be a map of different settlements, and also, what city is this going to be set in? New York? Cincinnati? Brandenburg?

If you read the OOC, the game world is not, indeed, our world. The RP is set on the eastern part of Occas; one of the continents of Obit, the game world.

Oh, wait, it is? I thought that the Pillars were caused on Earth by Obit, not the other way around. Huh, that's a bit of a confusion, but whatever. Thanks for clarifying that for me, I missed it. Well, with all that fixed, I'll have my character ready up to be sent to you by tonight probably.

I'll try send you a PM tomorrow, and hopefully I'll remember not to be a phallus :)

EDIT: Could you also tell me a bit more about culture (was it similar to any particular earth culture?), and a bit more about law enforcement. Thanks!

Um... Hmm...

Okay, I see where you;re confused. The "This word and another collided violently" thing has NOTHING to do with Earth. For all intents and purposes Earth does not exist. Everything happens on Obit, and not a single person has the slightest idea where the fuck the Hail came from. The "Worlds colliding" is... lets say a figure of speech.

KYLE: Yes, try your best to avoid being a phallic object. That is generally my role in a RP.

ALSO: Imma throw in a bit more info into the world and tech sections based on several questions I've been asked (Including culture stuff).

ALSO ALSO: Input from all parties is encouraged! Ask me questions or suggest stuff I may have completely forgotten.

ALSO^3: Magic isn't a thing in Obit. Near-perfect mechanical synthetic limbs/organs are (regrown organic ones are as well, but the tech is no longer attainable). Flora and fauna can basically be completely made up, but keep in mind that Obit is MOSTLY Earthlike. I WILL MAKE A MAP SOONISH: Kyle and Sage know I am adept at making shitty-but-effective maps.

FINALLY: Please read the rules carefully.

I'm actually going to totally reform the "Pre-Hail World" section. If I break it down into what I have for "Obit", then add an "UNO" and "SIP" subsection it'll be really repetitive. I'll likely chop off most of "Obit" and put the map there when it becomes a thing, then rewrite the chopped-off stuff into "UNO" and "SIP" with a lot more detail. My hope was that more expansive details could be revealed through RP, but that was probably too naive of me.

MORE ANSWERED QUESTIONS: Vehicles are a thing. However, in metropolitan areas anything that was not on a "Sky Rail" (moar details to hash out!) was considered a lower class vehicle. In addition, transportation was 90% automated, so any road-faring cars would have to be significantly tweaked for manual use.

I guess that's just one question....

I'm a little confused on something. You said that the various have divided and have claimed their own territories. However you mentioned "bluebacks" as the defacto currency. is this true for all the factions? Does the Vanguard have its own currency, or just use the blue backs anyway?

Are the factions completely separate, like their own nation states, or aligned cities under the control of a single faction, or are they more like political parties, having representatives in each area?

Things are not nearly that structured. A very sheltered society was crippled less than 20 years ago, so chaos lingers heavily still.

Immediately after the Hail, the DERB was the only thing resembling a structured government, and they had a lot of supplies to start with. For a short while they "owned" all the territory and thus a lot more supplies. However, many groups grew out of military safe zones and became their own factions. For the sake of story cohesion and my sanity, the story mostly focuses on the LISTED factions in the STARTING area. The ration tickets became something akin to "bottle caps" in the Fallout franchise because they became so widespread. Currently, they are becoming more of a fiat currency than one that has physical worth: They are used by most people because most people accept them.

The way territory works--at least to start with--is that we're all in DERB territory technically. This is a post-apocalyptic RP, so we're not really going to have pretty cardboard-cutout borders for every group. Avant Garde is an anti-DERB movement growing within Derb territories. The Unburdened are growing into something more akin to a cult.

I hope that was a satisfactory explanation. If not, shoot me a PM and we'll discuss it further. As a human being, I tend to radically overthink some things but overlook very simple stuff. It happens.

Obviously we should all just start using bottle caps as the main and overarching currency.

Beowulf and Kyle are accepted, and their CSs will go in a CS thread that will be made sometime before now and the heat death of the universe.

My priorities at the moment are:

  • Expand Pre-hail Obit lore for the sake of clarity. UNO (Kyle's inquiry into culture) and SIP will get fleshed out more this morning and I will likely add more specific tech.

  • Make a MAP! Almost 100% happening tomorrow. This should help you guys a LOT.

  • Make a CS thread. Also almost 100% tomorrow.

I am off work Tuesday and Thursday this week, so things will happen those days.

Neat. Are these Sky Rails still travel..able? If they were like monorails, you could probably fix up a few enough to be able to travel around a lot easier. I think that would be pretty neat and it would allow for interesting encounters like skyscraper ambushes and bombardment from a sky rail.

I never thought of it that way actually. I was thinking more along the lines of pre-hail metropolitan usage, but post-hail utility (outside existing non-hail-stricken cities) never occurred to me. Your character in particular would be quite involved with them, wouldn't he?

Speaking of the rails, I left out a few details because I passed out. They actually use a bunch Lummid projections on a thin rail to keep rail-faring vehicles suspended. The hard light's position is entirely dependent on the position and programming of its projector, so vehicles don't actually put much of a strain on the system at all.

This definitely works because I am not a physicist and I do what I want!

EDIT: I never actually answered your question. I will say yes they will work again if properly maintained. I'm sure Voyagers and caravaners would be interested in getting more of them working. However, they will not be everywhere. Country roads and less-traveled highways would not need them.

ANOTHER EDIT: I noticed stuff keeps getting cut off mid-sentence in my OOC edits. For instance, I had a whole paragraph on sky rails, and now there is a sentence and a half. The Guild is being funky lately, so weird shit keeps happening. If something looks cut-out, please inform me.

I blame magic. Pure, condensed magic. By the way, another question. How genetically modified are humans able to be in this? If focus was more on technology and not destruction, I'd assume there would be a lot of people who have had their genes ruffled with. Of course, with the apocalypse being around, you would probably have to be pretty rich to receive any.

I'm not sure I want to play with genetic augmentation too much. "Designer babies" would probably be a thing, but not very common, but that's probably it. The warless age lasted for only fifty years, and UNO would likely regulate more "morally questionable" technology. If such modification were a thing, it would likely only be practiced on the Islands.

Sorry I'm late on my almost-promise for a map and CS thread. The map is in progress and the CS thread is kinda still pointless at the moment. On the bright side, I'm 90% sure Beowulf and Kyle are the only ones planning to actually participate, so I'm not keeping a lot of people waiting. Wait, that isn't really a bright side. Shit. *RECRUITING!*

"What kind of story" is sort of a vague question that's hard to answer. My plan is to basically drop our characters into the world while I drive RP events forward. There is not one linear story planned out, although I do have several arcs in mind. The idea is to make the story character-driven, but it would work way better with more people.

Funnily enough, I got less done Tuesday than I have been getting done on my working days. I ended up becoming extremely busy with RL stuff today, but I am positive Thursday will be different. The map is halfway-ish done, and I refuse to do anymore this morning because I am sick of drawing with a trackpad and I am near passing out. Sorry if my content-adding speed has been slow: I'm starting to get burnt out on writing pure exposition and I've received only two CSs so far. A slow start unfortunately.
