William awakens in total darkness. He is lying (rather uncomfortably) on a cold, rough surface. Struggling to his feet, Will discovers that he is quite beaten up; his head throbs, and every muscle in his body feels as though it may rip if he overexerts himself. Regardless, he must press on. Standing around in total dumbfoundedness will get him nowhere. He decides to begin walking forwards, arms outstretched, as he tests every step.
After perhaps a minute of walking in the darkness, his hands reach a wall. This, it occurs to Will, is made of the same rough material he woke up on. The chamber Will is in must be a rather large cave. Will shuffles along the wall for what seems to be an eternity before his foot meets a rather soft mound. As he investigates, he discovers that this mound is actually a body of human. Upon searching the body, will finds a piece of flint, and a small knife. He strikes these objects together, creating a spark.
Creating a cascade of sparks showering the body, will examines the it. He sees part of glass sphere (perhaps two inches in diameter) protruding from the poor fellow's bag. As will tries to pull the sphere out, he discovers that it is attached to a one-foot long stick. The sphere begins to glow blue. Curious, Will looks at the sphere. The blue glow intensifies until will can no longer stand to stare at it. His eyes adjust after some time, and he stares at it once again, in wonder. What is this enchanted sphere?

No time for such questions. What else does this man have? A cloak, good. A rusty old sword...

Is he in danger? Surely not. He hadn't even thought of the possibility of encountering hostile adversaries until he discovered the sword.

Best take it.

Will grabs the wand of light, and observes his surroundings for the fist time since he had awoken. He had just emerged from a chamber of extremely large proportions. The extent of this chamber cannot be seen; the radius of light cast by the wand is too small (a mere ten feet, perhaps). The body is located at the entrance to a cylindrical tunnel, perhaps 10 feet in diameter. Will decides that this is his best option. Will marches along this tunnel for at least an hour before finding any change. The first area of interest comes in the form of a fork. He stands at the fork, considering his options for a moment, when he hears a very faint thump.
Not a minute later, a goblin emerges from the right side of the fork. The goblin seems just startled as Will is. It lashes out, wounding Will on the arm. Despite the pain, Will successfully counters the assault, instantly decapitating the goblin with his sword.
One thing (in fact, the only thing) will knows about goblins is that they are never alone. Where there is one, there is always a vast quantity, reaching the thousands. As he considers this, he hears hurried footsteps down the right side of the fork.
