Tiananmen Empire

occupied territories: Korea(s) | also known as Zhongguo (locally, basically China in Chinese), Imperial China, or simply China | population approx. 251,210,400 | Yuan (¥) currency

Government:
As expected of a nation that uses "Empire" in its name and has never heard of such thing as a Prime Minister or a Parliament, the Tiananmen Empire is an autocratic state through which the Emperor-- you guessed it-- reigns supreme. In addition, the co-equal Partisan institution composed of dozens of men representing provinces cooperates with the authority in governance with similar functions to a Roman Senate. Like the aforementioned group, the Emperor himself wields greater power than the Partisan, although a few things make the Partisan unique:

1. The Emperor derives a successor from the Partisan, most commonly young (for longevity), intelligent and competent, instead of grabbing a heir straight from the family;

2. The Partisan is mainly composed of elected officials from the provinces, rather than being an aristocratic organization full of wealthy men.

3. The Partisan has the right to remove an Emperor from power if statistics show a significant drop in the Empire's performance status that is generally agreed upon to likely continue with their current rule and/or a dangerous revolt is imminent (but not necessarily on general unhappiness in populace); and

It can be said that the Tiananmen Empire, while claimed to be an absolute monarchy, is not really that absolute and probably not really a monarchy. The Emperor can be more described as an extravagant dictator to critics and dissidents of the Tiananmen, who also say that a communist ideology still prevails over the Empire. Something ensures that the Emperors can do anything they want except to ruin the Empire, keeping it stable.

The capital and seat of government of the state remains to be Beijing. The seat of the Emperor is within the walls of the Forbidden City, while the chambers of the Partisans reside in Zhongnanhai. The empire's namesake location is the founding place of the state.

Military Overview:
The Empire gets to inherit the advanced technology its predecessor possessed, but unfortunately much of its troops have dwindled with the separation of many of its troops and the fighting that ensued between China and the separatists. Recently, Tiananmen is taking advantage of its relatively large population to revive its infantry, but it'll take a while before it matches China's former military might in the present equivalent.

6.8% of its GDP is dedicated to the military and the development/proliferation of technologies that support it. Tiananmen's forces typically utilizes electromagnetics, including railguns and kinetic weapons, as well as energy weapons, stealth, cybernetics, robotic armor suits and of course, good old spaceships. In case of a shortage of arms, however, plain old bullets and shells are used.

Tiananmen is notorious for some of its military training routines, which are so harsh they might qualify as human rights violations. Among them is waterboarding recruits repeatedly in the initiation rites and as punishment, slavery-like work and the like.

1,325,100 active soldiers
112,000 reserve soldiers
3,120,300 paramilitary count
60,120 military vehicles, 10,200 of which are tanks
12,000 UAVs
18,600 aircraft
413 spacecraft; 354 are mobile fighters, 59 are defense stations and 33 of those stations wield orbital bombardment capabilities using good old God Rods rigged with high-yield explosives or similar enhancements.
2,460 navy ships.

Economic Overview:
With much of the Empire surrounded by insurgents, Imperial China mainly relies on internal trade in a free market. Much of Tiananmen's economy relies on space mining and manufacturing, as well as the ages-old tradition of farming improved with advanced techniques and technology. The state still lays claim on the South China Sea and the resources held within, where one of the world's very last oil reserves remain. Oil has less of a practical purpose nowadays and is more of a luxury, kept in the homes of the rich as a souvenir and in museums as historical artifacts. Despite a market restricted by China's dangerous neighbors, the Tiananmen economy remains powerful enough to fuel its rapid growth.

Even though resistances bar China from trading directly with Europe, the Empire still trades with pan-American nations via the Pacific, as well as with lunar colonies from various factions.

Although impoverished people only make up 1/4 of the population, the wealth gap between them and the rest of Tiananmen is huge; much of them live in African tribe-like conditions, and the "richest" of that group, which are just as poor as refugees from a war-torn country, compose a further 1/4 of the poor, or 1/8 of the population in total. The wealthier 3/4 has regular access to present technology and are considered decently privileged. The poor group are either social outcasts, dissidents or South Korean refugees.

Cultural Description:
Tiananmen retains much of its Chinese culture, such as Confucianism, hardworking attitudes left over from a socialist mentality, dog food as a very common meal to the point that it is on par with other meats, and many others. A bit of a Western influence sourced from South Korea has gotten its way into Tiananmen as well, such as the prevalence of pop culture. Other than that, Tiananmen isn't very much diverse aside from its migrant population. Speaking of population, China has since moved on from its one-child policy and is now trying to repopulate itself, with the largest age group of its populace being old people.

Technological Overview:
Tiananmen is decently advanced, with a few space elevators connecting between massive spaceports down under and sprawling networks of space stations up high, huge underground bases housing much of the nation's troops and vehicles, hundreds of ships that regularly ship people on tours, transport between the mainland and the colonies and patrol Tiananmen's space...space, long winding networks of hyperloops and other feats the Empire boasts of. Moreover, the Empire remains to be one of the world's leading manufacturers of devices and tools, from phones to machinery and such.

Nanomachinery is currently only confined for use within military purposes, but Tiananmen will be releasing it to public use soon. Currently, this serves repair, construction assistance and biological enhancement purposes.

Colonies:
Tiananmen's main lunar colonies are located in Mare Tranquillitatis, and has grown to the size of sprawling cities. A few satellite colonies are located in Mare Serenitatis and Mare Fecunditatis. Tiananmen also has space stations within the Asteroid Belt area and colonies on Mars' Gale Crater and the surrounding areas, both of which are hotly contested among rival nations.

History:
As one would have optimistically expected, China grew into one of the world's greatest superpowers, rivaling the United States and of course, tensing their relations with fierce competition. Their influence clashed all over the international stage, and by then the two had a tight grasp on the world.

Tensions grew fierce with the collapse of North Korea in 2028 from extreme poverty and revolution, an "ally" that simply served the purpose of keeping the US-allied South Korea away from their territory. Both sides argued about its ownership; China wanted the land and the citizens theirs so efforts could be easier to keep the Western ally away as well as gain ownership of the loads of resources within; while South Korea wanted ownership due to cultural connections and of course, the same resources China desired. The standoff escalated into full-blown war on 2046 after the United States military count dropped to an all-time low due to budget issues, giving China the opportunity to march into the entire Korean Peninsula without proper aid from its formidable American foe, as well as take over disputed South China Sea islands.

After nearly the entire Korean Peninsula but a small tract of northern land has been taken (this was then claimed by Russia to Serbia), stability was only to last a little while. Eventually, China began suffering as the oil within their lands ran dry and the nations it traded toppled down, beginning with an economic crash, escalating with military unrest and finally developing into a revolution that tore China apart in 2061. What remained of the original government made an effort to "save" China by founding the Tiananmen Empire on a meeting in the namesake palace and a proclamation in the namesake city square.

The Empire launched a campaign to recover all Chinese lands within its domain as it claimed itself to be the sole successor of China, plowing down surrounding insurgents to lay claim to their soil. Consequently, Tiananmen's military dwindled within years, forcing the Empire to slow down and focus on arming their military with better equipment. With that also came the rapid explosion of the Empire's economy and technology, leading Tiananmen to build numerous technological wonders as well as outpace many recovering and newborn states.

With much of the resistance armies fallen and the Chinese army refitted, the Empire may soon be continuing its conquest.
