So I've dusted off an old(ish) character, and here he is:

"It's them or us, and I vote for us; how 'bout you?"

About

Name: Nick Ferrin (Nicky to elderly female relatives and very close friends)

Age: 32

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Straight

Physical description: Tall (about 6’2”) with a lean, wiry frame. He has quite pale colouring – his hair is light to mid brown worn slightly too long to be tidy, he has alert blue eyes and (if you look very closely) a few freckles; he’s the sort who’ll burn before tanning. He has rather hard features that may give him something of a forbidding look, but he has an appealing lopsided smile when he uses it. He has an old scar on his left shoulder where a vampire tore a lump out of his shoulder a few years ago. Nick has a surprisingly rich voice, with a distinct British accent. He wears hard wearing, casual clothing (jeans and a plain shirt or T-shirt) and always has a slim silver chain with a couple of plain gold rings threaded on it around his neck under his shirt.

Personality: Nick comes across as distant and reserved, which he is to an extent – he’s perfectly polite and friendly, but tends to keep people at arm’s length until he gets to know them. Despite his reserve, he’s very much a team player and will do what’s required of him without any complaints, though if he thinks something is a bad idea he’ll point out his objection and the reasons behind it. But still waters run deep – he does have emotions, just doesn’t like sharing them with everyone. Rub him up the wrong way and he will eventually snap; get close to him and he’ll be one of the most loyal friends you could hope to have. He has a very dry, ‘British’ sense of humour.

Background: Born in the small town of Whitstable in Kent, Nick’s early years were happy until his father died when he was eight and his mother remarried two years later. Nick disliked his step-father with more than a young child’s typical animosity – he couldn’t explain why, just that he ‘felt wrong’. Over the next few months his mother gradually became ill, getting more and more pale and listless. Nick started spying on his parents and eventually spotted his step-father feeding on his mother. He didn’t quite understand what was happening but was repulsed by it and flew at his step-father. He was easily batted aside, but the sight of his step-father’s face twisted into something animalistic made him scream with terror and fury. While his mother tried to deal with the thing her husband had become, Nick snatched the bayonet left from his grandfather’s service in the war and stabbed him repeatedly until a lucky blow took him in the heart. A story of intruders and a botched robbery satisfied the police, and Nick and his mother left the area, hiding themselves amongst the millions in London.

As Nick grew older he realised his step-father was only one of the monsters that teemed in the country. He took to carrying his grandfather’s bayonet with him, originally for protection, but he started to consider killing the monsters if he got the chance. He took out a couple of vampires (more through luck than anything else) and while trailing one ‘monster’ he ran into a group of hunters and after being shouted out for almost ruining their operations, he was recruited to join them – he was given proper training with his blades and took exercises to improve his stamina and agility, which eventually led to him taking up parkour. He married when he was twenty five and ‘retired’ from the field for a year or so, training younger hunters instead, but his wife was caught and turned by the vampires (was she targeted deliberately? Yes). He had to kill her himself when she broke into the house (the scar on his shoulder came from where he hesitated long enough for her to tear into him), and his hatred for the vampires grew more intense, particularly as his wife had told him a fortnight before she was pregnant. He doesn't know why he didn't turn from that bite - probably because he got treatment as soon as possible from people that actually knew what they were doing. Now he lives to kill vampires – it’s all he has left.

Skills

Talents: : Stamina - Nick has strong endurance and a high pain threshold.

Agility - His training has left him fit and agile – he’s not an Olympic athlete, but he could still do basic parkour if he had to.

He is an expert with his blades, ranging from his grandfather’s bayonet to a foot long seax. He can fight with them or unarmed with a hotchpotch mix of fighting skills – a mix of martial arts moves he’s picked up (no one set discipline) and simple dirty fighting.

Good with a crossbow – he usually uses a mini crossbow due to it being easier to conceal, but could manage a full size one.

Experience – he’s been fighting these things most of his life; he knows a lot about how to find them and kill them.

Stubborn - when he's on the trail of a vampire, it'll take a lot to throw him off.

Weapon(s): He has a variety of blades that he uses – he normally has four or five concealed on him at any one time. He always keeps them sharp.
If he’s wearing a longer coat, it’s because he’s got his seax or mini-crossbow on him.

Has semi-adopted a stray cat he calls Stoker - it doesn't come in the flat, but he leaves food out on the fire-escape for it.
Used to play guitar before his wife died, but now there’s dust gathering on his guitar case.

Name: Rida Hillary Bush

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Asexual

Physical description: Rida has a buzz cut for her hair making her stand out rather largely among her peers. She always seems to have a scowl on her face. Under her cloths people would consider Rida as a body builder just starting out. Rida is about 5’2 in height and is rather light. Rida always walks as if she has a purpose, she is short but the way she walks makes her very intimidating.

Personality: Rida HATES vampires with a passion. If she even gets a wiff of one she will kill them. If she believes someone else to be a vampire she will ask them up front. If she believes them to be lying though she will kill them. Rida is someone who takes everything far more seriously than she should. She is not the kind to be taken lightly. If a villain starts to monologue she will take that opportunity to kill them midsentence.

Background: Rida was born within a rather average family. Her family loved her, that was until they were bitten and turned into vampires. She had to kill them herself, this was at the age of 8. She spent a few months scarred from the experience but after that she started to go out hunting vampires and killing them before they got a chance to retaliate.
At around the age of 15 she was found by the hunters and joined them. Ever since she has been known as extremely short tempered as she goes after the vampires and kills them often before they got a chance to start pleading. Within the Hunters she has gained the nick name of the Assassin Hunter.

Skills

Talents: Rida is very limber and has no problem scaling buildings and trees. Rida is also extremely hand with daggers. Sadly she can’t throw a dagger to save her life as she has never been able to understand how to do such a thing. She also can’t swim.

Wepon(s): Rida carries two daggers with her. These are daggers meant to be held though as she can’t throw them. She also carries a pistol with a silencer on the end as well. However one of her favorite weapons is her shotgun. She uses it not just for the power of it’s shot, but also due it’s wide spread range. This works best for her as her aim is not as good as the others.

Extra

When someone else asks about Rida’s parents she will freeze for a few seconds. This is one of her greatest flaws as the day she killed her parents still haunts her.
The only thing she has any compassion for is a mastiff dog named Gerald that is almost as big as her.

I have more questions (sorry!):

Would it be okay to assume Nick's mum took a while to turn (since we don't know how long the virus takes to infect people, and some people may have more resistance to it than others) and when she found out what she was she either run off or took her own life to avoid hurting her son?

Where is this set (I'm assuming the U.S.)?

Do hunters have to hold down a day job to earn money, or do they get paid a salary for being hunters? And if they get paid for being hunters, who funds it? is it a wealthy individual who set the organisation up, or are they a secret government organisation (a sort of supernatural black ops, if you will)?

How do hunters recognise vampires? Do they have any sense or abilities to know someone's undead or do they have to follow suspicious individuals until they do something to prove they're vampire or otherwise?

I'm not trying to cause problems, just get a better grounding of this world!

No problem! I'm glad your so interested in the world. So for your questions:

Yes that's first bits a great idea. We can say it takes between an hour and a week, even a month in the rare individual to completely turn.

The US is the country I'm most familiar with and many others I'm sure, so your right on that front as well.

I'ma be blunt here, they Rob the vampires they kill, sometimes scam or even steal from normal people. The base is funded by Hawkes parents.

Vampire's eyes get redder, and their skin paler, they tend to be colder/ have a harder time sustaining body heat, and of course they murder and eat people. It's a guessing game mostly, there can be accidents sometimes where normal people are wrongly killed.

Once again, no problem I love questions.

Name: Autumn "Mother" O'Riley

Age: Died at age 18

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Bi-sexual

Physical description: Red, long hair slightly reveals a chiseled, charming face. Expressive silver eyes, set sunken within their sockets. A old scar in shaped of an old Celtic symbol is almost hidden under a choker, on the left side of her neck, a pleasurable memory of a deceased love. The face of Autumn O'Riley, a true winner among vampires. She stands gracefully with her subtle frame. There is something captivating about the pale goddess, perhaps it's a feeling of coldness or perhaps it's simply her disposition. But nonetheless, people tend to follow her and tend to stay on her good side, while secretly fearing her.

Personality: After 46 years, Autumn is one of the most level headed vampires the world had ever seen. She has a habit of getting her way, she’s the sort of woman that people just can’t seem to say no to. Her long locks and bright eyes may be part of the reason that her art is so effective but in reality it’s the motherly role she plays. One look at people with that loving expression, her soft words playing with their emotions, is enough to have them wrapped around her little finger. She may be good in height but on the inside she's much bigger and much more powerful than the majority of people she meets.

The life of a supernatural was not one that Louise and Jean O'Riley saw for their daughter because they were blissfully unaware that any existed. Jean worked as a US Army Signals Analyst with the National Security Agency and his wife, Louise, worked part-time for a home decor agency that often decorated the homes of the political elite. A loving republican couple was only their facade, inside their home Louise and Jean weren’t really a couple. Both were recovering homosexuals who regularly attended homosexuality anonymous meetings and married more for mutual support rather than actual love. This was why Autumn wasn’t born of love but pressure. Her parents had been married five years without conceiving and all their friends and family could ask them was when they were going to have kids. The two years it took had them constantly fighting about whether or not it was worth it. In 1954, Autumn was born and they adored their daughter, who they named after Jean’s deceased grandmother.

Middle school was when things started to change for Autumn. Her parents had started to grow distant and she didn’t understand why. Even though her parents played dutiful roles it became clear how unhappy they were. Autumn was no longer a baby and her first word and first day of kindergarten could no longer distract them from how unhappy they were. Almost never at home, Autumn rarely spoke to them, merely taking advantage of the fact they would sign any permission slip she slid in front of their faces, congratulate her whenever she spoke of good news and smile whenever she picked a movie. It felt so rehearsed which was why in her final year she started to go through her parents things. She didn’t want anything to turn up but it did. Autumn found some gay pornographic material. It seemed kind of like a joke, something one of her friends had left behind.

Still the next evening when her parents went out she followed them. They took a short walk to a local community center and went inside. Autumn looked around, trying to find out why they could be in there. That was when she saw the flyer for “Homosexuals Anonymous.” It seemed unthinkable that this could be what her parents were attending but with what she had found it made sense. Sneaking home she started to notice things that she never had before. How often her father slept on the couch, the lack of ‘couples’ pictures on the walls, the notes they left for each other. It all felt so distant.

Everything started to feel so fake for her, the pastel pink sweaters she wore to display a suburban innocence felt like lies. She couldn’t handle it but she couldn’t stand the thought of addressing her parents about it. Her whole summer before high school was spent trying to work out why. The question seemed to plague her because her parents had always told her to be proud of who she is, if that was wrong then why were they trying to change themselves?

By the time Autumn started high school she had a new look. It wasn’t khakis and sweaters it was short skirts and revealing shirts. What had mainly made the difference was that Autumn had started to drink. It started with one drink during the middle of the holidays when her parents had kissed before going to bed. She had felt such disgust with the act she had stolen her father’s rarely used brandy. Since it only became more regular she drank to deal with everything that she wasn’t letting anyone in on. Her friends drifted away when they could no longer stand the stench of vodka that came off her and how she was constantly running up her parents credit card bills as a twisted form of punishment. Time had come to make new friends, ones that fit her new self. She met people she could have fun with, losing her virginity to a boy in her calculus class she’d never spoken to before that night. Autumn was very free about it all, becoming slowly aware she liked both men and women. Even her parents couldn’t do anything about what was going on and punishment proved futile.

Finally her father discovered what Autumn knew and what she had been up to. Her friends decided to visit a lounge a few towns over from theirs, very inebriated by the time she arrived, Autumn spent the evening with her lips against that of her best friend Kylie. Unbeknownst to her Jean O'Riley was there, as he yelled at his daughter she merely laughed until he was done. Creating quite a scene she announced what she knew with a multitude of insults directed at him. Her father took her home and the next morning was gone. He left a note, he could not do it anymore and he had enough. Louise tried to help Autumn but was only met with aggressive responses, the most notable of which was when she spat in her mother’s face during a parent teacher interview. College was out of the question, and her mother had informed her she’d set her a job if only she cleaned up her act. Autumn didn’t and by the end of the summer her mother had kicked her out the house hoping she'll hit rock bottom and return to home.

If Louise had known the kind of rock bottom in store for her daughter she would have kept her by her side until the day of her death.

One evening out in the town, Autumn was called over to a table by a man a few years her senior but not by much, never opposed to finding a bed for the evening she went. Drunk on all liquor imaginable she did not notice the man biting her. It wasn’t until she woke up inside six feet under with an powerful hunger, confusion and fear cloud her mind. She clawed her way out of the coffin with her bare hands. Once she had resurfaced from the ground, covered in blood and dirt. She was handed a warm glass by a woman and towering over her, the man from the evening staring at her with amazement.

Valentin Avery was a tall man with a young face and dark hair. In his black on black ensemble he was like a brunette male version of herself, even his plump lips reminded her of her own. It was his eyes however that in her sober state she noticed reflected in different hues. Once she had downed the drink, did little to quench her hunger. For the first time, he spoke to her about the news of the a plague which was all over the papers, taking the lives of the living. It was the new evolution of the era. He explained what he had made her and he had searched for a 'true' heir to make sure his family would be reunited. He had apparently found many, descendants of his brothers and sisters but it was she who had appealed to him with her natural taste for the darkness.

He said they would go away, there was a place for her where she could learn to be the best progeny she could be. And if she accept, he could give her all she desired. Fear to be locked away again, she accepted.

Everything flew by for Autumn after that. Her life suddenly gone, falling from her fingers like sand. She was so hungry all the time, they often stop, for Autumn to indulge in her hunger. Her sire gained great amusement from it and every time he smiled or felt joy she had a kind of validation for her actions that she did not completely understand. She did not understand her connection to the man at all. All she felt was love him. Enough to the intensity of a lion, she bared fangs at anyone who got to close.

Living in his estate, he taught her all he knew. Autumn was the ideal student and heir he longed for. However, her hunger was never sedated. Autumn spent her free hours constantly eating. Valentin grew concerned about her diet. While her hunger grew, her skills began to bloom.

Soon, the morgue's nobodies wasn't enough. She began to tortured without concern for the innocents, even going as far to bathe in the blood of her victims. Valentin could not abide this any longer, in his home. The place where they were meant to be safe from the growing hunters. Vampires were predatory and animalistic beings. To him, she had become a monster.

It was not long before Autumn grew tried of the elder, unable to bring herself to murder the very man she had cared for her. Autumn escaped one night, capturing the attention of a hunter. She lead the fellow killer to the estate, where with success the hunter spotted Valentin and slayed the old vampire. As a reward, she feast upon the hunter and played in his flesh.

Overtime, Autumn took the estate as her own while she grew stronger. She discovered her true calling after offering shelter to a few of her kind. They worship her strength and her humble services.

She quickly rose to prominence as "Mother", providing food, protection and sanctuary to all those willing to serve her. In 2013, Perpetual Masquerade was bored.
