I can dig it.
These seems like a very charged thread. I guess that's to be expected when people's opinions are inserted to try to explain a thing.

Speaking of which, could someone explain the appeal of Star Trek? I've tried to get into it, but it just seems very dry and...homely I guess, it gives sci-fi a very mundane feel for me, which usually the word 'mundane' doesn't even come close to space because space is awesome and cool. Obviously I'm a star wars fan, which has it's own bloody and dishonorable history.
Nipton

Numerius leaned back in his seat, his eyes closing. He thought of home, of his wife and children. Those three were a handful, but he wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. His thoughts strayed to his family before the legion, of the carnage that had befallen his beloved home town. Numerius hoped they were resting easy with Mars now. A sharp knocking came at the office door, bringing Numerius startlingly back to the present. The officer sat up straight and said in a powerful voice "Come in."

A legionnaire opened the door and for a brief moment Numerius couldn't identify him. But then he realized, this must be one of Vulpes Inculta's shadow operatives. "Ave Caesar, Centurion. Orders from top brass." The operative handed Numerius a letter, placing a fist over his heart and vanishing into the doorway. Numerius regarded the letter for a moment before opening it, quickly reading it. Numerius sighed as he put the letter down, he was hoping to stay in the luxury town hall of Nipton for a while longer, but alas it was not to be. Numerius grabbed his helmet and slid it onto his head. "Legionnaire!" he barked. A young guard who had been standing out in the hall stumbled in and saluted Numerius. "Get me Decanus Publius immediately."

100 Legionnaires march from Nipton, 25 Elites surround the 24 NCR prisoners in a 360 formation. Numerius leads the elites as the more senior decani lead the march. Going over the orders in his brain, Numerius figured they would go along the road and break off into wilderness just before Novac, they would cut across the highways into more wilderness and navigate until they made it to Nelson. The whole trip, with this many men hopefully would take no more than a day and a half at most. The centurion pulled his power fist on and readjusted the sword that hung from his hip. With this many men, any NCR opposition shouldn't pose much of a threat. Especially with the prisoners in tow. Numerius was nervous about the skeleton crew he left at Nipton, but orders were orders. Decanus Publius was a competent leader, he should be able to keep things under control.
Nipton

Numerius sat in office of the Nipton town hall. His helmet sat on the desk as he read over some Legion reports of the area. Vulpes Inculta was a very busy man, and as he shifted like a shadow across the Mojave he needed someone to run things back in Nipton. While this definitely wasn't the most exciting assignment Numerius ever had, it was a good opportunity to get promoted to a higher clearance of Centurion. Inculta was a very influential man in the legion and on word of recommendation from him could boost Numerius to the rank of Veteran Centurion. The office in which he sat was musty at best, but it showed obvious signs of the former mayor's creature comforts. A Legion flag has been placed on the back wall over a storage room door. The NCR prisoners were up to the Centurion's mercy if NCR leadership refused to pay the ransom. Vulpes Inculta was counting on Numerius and the legionnaire would be damned if he failed this simple mission. A sharp rap came at his door and gave a quick "Come in."

A legionnaire with a helmet of many feathers stepped through the doors, a Decanus. He placed a fist over his heart and stated "Ave Caesar, Centurion." Numerius returned the salute saying "Ave Caesar, Decanus Publius. What is it?" The Decanus let his hand fall and placed both of his hands behind his back. "The men are now on their patrols around the settlement. I have a contubernia guarding the NCR prisoners."

Numerius nodded and folded up the papers he was viewing. "Good, if they give the men any trouble be firm and quick in the punishment. Any sign of weakness those dogs will jump at. I'd rather none of the men be killed by a desperate prisoner. I expect we'll only have them for a week before we are rid of them. I doubt the NCR would allow their men to suffer the same fate as criminals." The centurion paused for a moment. "Post scouts on the edges of town, on the hillsides so we can see if there is anyone approaching from the roads or countrysides."

"Yes, sir."

"That will be all."

Publius placed a fist over his heart and turned on his heel, exiting the room.
Name: Numerius Valens
Age: 32
Looks:

Numerius stands at 5 foot 11 and is broad of build and muscle. He has dark and suspicious eyes with a dangerous light in them. He often keeps his black hair short with a modest goatee. His body is covered in scars, the bull of the legion has been branded onto his left pectoral. His uniform consists of heavy metal armor which have been re-purposed into the colors of the Legion. His helmet is signifying of the Centurion rank, a plume of bright red feathers.

Personality:
When you think of a New Legion Officer, you probably imagine Numerius. Powerful, decisive, ruthless, totally dedicated to the cause of Caesar and the Legion, Numerius is the model legionnaire. Numerius was promoted to his position because he has the mindset of a conqueror, not of a simple foot soldier. He welcomes all who wishes to join the legion with open arms and destroys all who would dare oppose him and his brothers. While some outside the legion would consider him a monster (and that very well might be true) within the legion he's considered a good man. Numerius is very family oriented, his wife and two children being one of his motivating factors for fighting. He truly believes once that Legion has taken over everything, the world will be safe and his children can grow up to do great things. If that means he has to slay every degenerate that stands in his path, than so be it.

Numerius is also a devout follower of Mars, the official God of the Legion. He has a unique respect for his enemies, weak or strong, that is rare in the legion. It speaks of his humbleness and modesty when facing down an opponent which many other legionnaires lack. But one shouldn't mistake these traits for mercy, as Numerius has none for any who would stand in the way of his goals.

Backstory:

Numerius Valens was born Elijah Valen in a large farming town on the border of Kansas. He grew up a farmer, living in a brutal environment like most in the wasteland. This town was located in the middle of the plains with the only fertile land for miles around. People from all over came to trade for the freshly grown food of his town, which also made it a target for raiders. Elijah joined the town guard at the age of 15, learning how to fight properly, track thieves and handle drunks. He went on many patrols in his few years of serving. But by the time he was 18, the raiders had become too many as his town had raised the prices for food. Many normal people were simply hungry and didn't have the means to afford it from the now wealthy farming town.

So an army of raiders assaulted the town in the dead of night in a vicious attack. It went farther than anybody wanted. Many innocents lay dead in the streets and Elijah himself had been shot twice, bleeding out at the gates. He passed out with image of the town he failed fading in his mind. He awoke in a Legion tent two days later. The New Legion had moved in and dispatched the raiders, setting up an outpost in the town. They had saved his life and for that, he was in their debt. The Legion let him know it too and he was drafted that day into their forces. Elijah buried his parents and young sister that day and was given the name Numerius Valens and the tattoo of the Legion, a bull on his left pectoral.

Numerius marched out with a centuria towards Colorado, to a larger outpost. Over the years, Numerius fought in many battles and participated in many campaigns. His acts of valor got him noticed and promoted over time. He took many lives with his blade and earned his right to be called a legionnaire and a Centurion. He met a beautiful woman by the name of Marziana and married her and had two beautiful children, Loxus and Luna. Numerius began to see Mars' influence in each aspect of his life and gave thanks. Though the deaths of his previous family still haunted him, his new family was all he needed to move forward. Now the NCR and Mr. House is in the Legion's cross hairs and Numerius is ready to take them both on for the glory of the Legion. And Mars help anyone who gets in their way.
