Episode 1: New Year

It was a pleasant morning at the beginning of April, a fresh spring breeze lightly blowing on the campus of Yōkai Academy as all the new students gathered for their first day. After the students arrived on campus and checked their classroom assignments, they were to gather at the assembly hall for the new student welcoming ceremony like many human schools held every year. After the Headmaster, Tsukune Aono, presented a standard greeting speech to the student body, he introduced the student council president with a speech of her own. A girl with long, bright silver hair accented with pink tips walked onto the stage as the Headmaster left the podium and exited on the opposite stage. Upon approaching the podium, the girl adjusted the glasses on her brow and cleared her throat.

“Thank you, Headmaster, and hello new students of Yōkai Academy. I'm Miku Aono, your student council president for your first year here, and I would like to formally welcome you to our school. Because of the special circumstances of our campus, there are a few points I would like to personally inform you all of. For starters, please maintain your human guises at all times and be careful not to speak of your identities to your peers. Should you need any special accommodations please direct them to the student council and we will collaborate with staff to ensure your needs are taken cared of. Additionally, should you ever need anyone to talk to about concerns you may have, my door is always open. I implore you to confide in me if you ever have concerns rather than bottle it up.

“After this assembly, please report to your homeroom classes where you will be introduced to some of the finer rules of the school as well as to your fellow classmates. Additionally,”
she said while reaching into her skirt pocket, pulling out a small black box-shaped object and held it up to show the students watching her, “you will each be provided with one of these special handheld smart-phones. These objects are very pivotal to human society these days, and can normally be used for a variety of functions such as making phone calls, sending instant messages, making mathematical calculations, watching videos, playing music, and even playing electronic games.

“Due to the special circumstances of the school, however, privacy is heavily protected. This means that the special smart-phones you will be provided with will have zero access to outside networks that might provide any kind of security compromise. Some of the more popular apps and websites, however, have been made to allow limited access to the student body, so you may still visit IPs such as YouTube and NicoNico. The security measures taken also prevent outgoing calls or messages to any phones aside from those provided by the school. If you ever need to contact family members outside the school there is an older analog phone in the lounge of the student dorms that you may make a reservation to use.

“If you have any questions, feel free to ask your homeroom teacher or come to the student council office; I will be there for the rest of the day preparing for the school year and will be happy to speak with anyone that needs me. I hope you all have a great high school experience here at Yōkai Academy.”
With the conclusion of her speech, Miku bowed her head to the assembled students and left the stage. Afterwards, another teacher approached the podium and announced that the assembly was now concluded and the students were all dismissed to their respective homerooms.

After the assembly finished, Junbi stretched his arms above his head before leaving his seat. Damn, we get our own special smart-phones in addition to a free uniform? This deal is getting better and better by the moment. He smiled in content, fully looking forward to the school years to come. Looking around at his peers, he could tell that some of the students knew each other, likely from attending the same schools before, but despite not knowing anyone himself he didn't feel too lonely. Not like it's anything different for me, but I should still make sure to associate with someone so no one thinks I'm a loner. Hopefully there are some good people in my class; definitely want to avoid anyone that seems violent though... As the memory of the group he used to associate with before arriving at Yōkai Academy crossed his mind, a shiver ran up Junbi's spine. Shaking his head to clear his mind, he marched on towards his homeroom.

In his classroom, Junbi sat in a middle row by the windows, waiting for the teacher to show up. Some of his classmates around him seemed to already be socializing, and Junbi didn't really get an opportunity to join. As he looked around the classroom, his eyes fell upon someone skulking at the front door, watching the class, which caused Junbi to cringe for a moment. As soon as the woman at the door noticed Junbi's reaction and their eyes met, she opened the door all the way and walked up to the chalk board at the front of the class. The folder in her hand suggested she was their homeroom teacher, and she began writing her name on the board before addressing the classroom.

She stood in silence for a moment, waiting for the class to go silent before removing the sucker from her mouth and speaking up. “Hey class, my name's Shirayuki and I'll be your homeroom teacher,” she said in a soft, almost lazy-sounding voice. “I also teach Language Arts, so look forward to that. Go ahead and start introducing yourselves. You can start from Seat 1 and move down the list from there.” Since Seat 1 was at the front by the door, this meant Junbi had some time to think of how to introduce himself as his peers began giving their own self-introductions.

Off in another classroom, the homeroom teacher gave a more cheerful yet simultaneously proper greeting to her class; “Good morning class! I'm Ruby Toujou, your homeroom teacher and aide to the Headmaster. I look forward to our year together, and hope you all will do your best while attending Yōkai Academy!” She gave a smile at all the students, who seemed to be paying more attention to her absurdly risqué outfit that the words she said. She then gestured to a student in the front row and said; “Now why don't you all introduce yourselves?”

Yet another classroom of first years was being led by a deceptively youthful-looking woman that energetically greeted her students; “Welcome everyone, to Yōkai Academy! I'll be your homeroom teacher, Ms. Shizuka Nekonome. As I'm sure you all know...” she began, continuing with a bright smile and a raised finger; “Yōkai... is a school for monsters!” Ms. Nekonome then began tapping on the whiteboard with her aluminum pointing stick at a diagram she had drawn as she continued her explanation. “Now! Like it or not, human beings run the world! For us monsters to survive, we must learn to coexist peacefully with them, especially after the incident two and a half decades ago that revealed our presence to humans worldwide! And that's the mission of this academy! Living peacefully in a human world! Which brings up Rule #1! You will retain your human appearance!” Directing her gaze to the class as a whole, she emphasized her point; “Does everyone understand? The first key to survival among humans is to be able to disguise yourself as one of them! To practice the art of disguise, please don't reveal your true nature - even to your fellow students! Even as she said this, a white-tipped, yellow tail slipped out from under her skirt.

“But don't worry about running into any humans here!” She added with an index finger raised, completely ignoring her own disguise slip. “All the faculty and staff are monsters just like you! And since the academy is located inside the secret ‘Borderlands’... no human has ever seen it. At least - not seen it and lived!! AHAHA HAHAHA!” This final comment was made with a lighthearted fist pump above her head as she laughed at her own word play that she repeated for every new homeroom she taught. “Now, why don't you all start introducing yourselves!”

Up on the second floor, one of the Second Year classrooms was bustling as the returning students chatted among themselves, reconnecting with friends from the previous year. One group in particular had a very boisterous center, but even that group went silent as soon as the door into the classroom opened and they all saw the woman that entered through. All the students quickly filed into their seats as their teacher, easily remembered for her strict, almost spartan teaching style, approached the chalkboard and wrote her name on it. She turned to face the students with her usual smile of confidence, a hand on her waist as she announced; “Welcome back to school, students! I'll be your homeroom teacher for your second year, and of course I'll still be in charge of working your bodies near their limits during Phys. Ed. In case any of you have forgotten, I'm Mrs. Aono; hold your questions about my relationship to the Headmaster and student council president and know your place. Why don't we have you all give some self-introductions to your peers, since I'm sure some of you didn't share classes last year. Let's start with Mizuchi,” she declared, gesturing towards the one student that had already been in his seat when she arrived.
Yeah I haven't been entirely feeling RP-ready lately, it's been a rough few months. Probably won't be joining anything unless it really holds my attention.

I totally know that feeling, in fact I was experiencing it for a while until just recently, so I definitely get that. Thanks for getting back to me about it, and I hope you enjoy your breather :)

If at some point you get back into the mood to RP and think back on us, please feel free to check in! It's likely we'll have room to work you in if we don't get any more interested parties at this point, and even if we do we still might have the space so please do check in ^-^

After the usual long night of going over his enchantments to make sure they were calibrated properly, Finlay had been dead asleep. When the message blared away his slumber, he was rather perturbed at first as he lay staring at the ceiling groggily for a few minutes. Then he had a realization; Hold on, the Masters' Office? Ah ha! It's finally time! I knew they would select me for the mission! With that thought, he practically jumped out of bed.

Without sparing a moment, Finlay grabbed his jacket and staff before rushing out the door, not wanting to keep the Masters waiting. As he jogged to the office, he used his free hand to tidy his bangs the best he could while letting his mind wonder about things; The ad said this would be an important top secret mission; I can't wait to hear what kind of task it will be. I wonder what the other people selected for the team will be like. Knowing myself though, I'm sure we'll get along great! I'm sure the Masters made their selections very carefully, and didn't choose anyone untrustworthy like that monster Mana. At this thought, he had arrived outside the door to the Masters' Office. Taking a brief moment to calm his breathing and collect himself, Finlay cleared his throat before opening the door with care.

"Greetings, I believe you called for me?" He spoke as he entered the room with a calm smile, giving a courteous bow to the Masters. Upon looking around the room he noticed that there were 4 others that had already arrived, and when the Masters acknowledged his greeting and directed him to a set of 8 chairs he realized they were still waiting on 3 others. Well I may not have arrived first, but at least I'm not the last one to keep everyone waiting! He bowed once more in acknowledgement before taking a seat, looking around at what appeared to be his party-mates; Hmm... an experienced-looking gentleman that seems a bit older than me... he should be quite reliable! A pair of girls that seem to already know each other... good! It's always good for there to be positive chemistry in a group of comrades. And finally a boy who looks to be related to one of the girls... oh my! Those are some intense scars! And are those prosthetic limbs?! Seems he's been through a lot, but it looks like he's fairly sturdy nonetheless. This looks to be an interesting group! He looked forward to the task they would be given, and to learning more about and working with his fellows within the group.
just double checking, but @Bartimaeus & @RumikoOhara, are you guys still interested in this? It's been a while since I heard from you so I got a little concerned

I know the monsters aren't supposed to show their true forms, but are they allowed to tell each other what they are, or are they not supposed to talk about it at all?

I believe the rule was that they aren't supposed to reveal what their true form is to anybody, since that would defeat the purpose of being taught to blend in with humans if they had such a loose tongue, but obviously that rule isn't exactly the best kept one lol
@Lore Magus Glad to hear that! I think it's time to start working on a kitsune, then.

oh fun! That'll make two of us! XD nice

Agh okay, got it. I'll put some grades on in a bit.

I'm interested in the Art Club President, actually! But that's gonna be four characters for me since I really wanna play my character's brothers too. So I'll probably not. :')

Side Characters traditionally only have brief moments of relevance, unless otherwise stated. The Art Club President is one of those that will likely get referenced on occasion, but will only see a lot of actual use if and when the party decides to look into the connection. This is mostly me setting things up for later into the story when things start progressing more, so feel free to take your time deciding. Also, on the topic of the brothers: having them as Main Characters would entail putting equal attention on their day-to-day lives, whereas if you made the older 2 simply Side Characters then they'd only need to be focused on when they're interacting with Main Characters, who are preferably members of the Newspaper Club or have a lot of interaction with said members. I was hoping setting it up this way would help organize what characters get obvious priority in the story, and by extension make it easier for everyone to know how characters are categorized, as opposed to just PCs and NPCs (since I'm requesting that Players also take on some of the Side Characters).

To put it into perspective: Tsukune Aono in the original is a Main Character, whereas Ms. Nekonome is a Side Character. Tsukune gets watched by the audience most of the time, whereas Ms. Nekonome only shows up when she's relevant, such as the first day of homeroom, the time she invited Tsukune and Moka to the Newspaper Club that she managed, and when her class took a trip to the beach. This is the kind of divide of attention I'm trying to convey to our RP characters. So in your case Saburo would get full screen time as a Main Character, and his brothers would only get screen time when they're relevant to the story, like an occasional visit to check on/mess with Saburo or something, since I assume you weren't planning on all 3 of them joining or being closely involved with the Newspaper Club, right? I don't want to make you feel like I'm forcing this, just wanted to try and help explain the categorization better so you can make your decision with more understanding of my intentions for the roles ^-^
MAGUS!! And fellows! I live!!
You'll get three characters out of me. I think. We'll see!

*Edit
Is the GPA thing a US grading system? We don't have it in my country so I don't know how to calculate it, and afaik Japan doesn't use it. I found this and this but nothing about GPA in Japan.

Just wanna ask first before I make something up.

Another thing:
<Snipped quote>
Where on the profile can I do this? History maybe?

Also I know my image is HUGE rn, really sorry, I'll uh think of something.

yeah, GPA (Grade Point Average) is traditionally a US system I guess. I took inspiration for the character sheets from the official Rosa-Vam teaser application, and am mainly using it as setting fluff. The way the system works is basically each grade is given a certain amount of points:
A (90%-100%) = 4.0
B (80%-89.9%) = 3.0
C (70%-79.9%) = 2.0
D (60%-69.9%) = 1.0
F (<60%) = 0.0
All the points from each grade you get is averaged together for your GPA, so a straight A student would have a 4.0, and a student that's had mostly a mixture of A's and B's would have anywhere between 3.1-3.9, and so on. I'm excited to see your characters! :3 Also, did any of the side characters up for grabs interest you at all? As for where to add alterations, you can do that either as a spot under the Monstricity using a list tag or under Notes

Is this still open?

Yes it is! Only reason I've been inactive was due to some work constraints combined with being busy outside work, but I should be a bit more free to work on characters after tonight.

Age: 21
School Year: 5th

Specialty/Apprenticeship: Weapon Buffing & Conditional Enchantments

Magic Affinity: Elemental (Water)

Magic Class: Enchantment & Elemental attacks
Specializing in conditional spells and weapon enchantment, as well as strong elemental spells, Finlay has two very different fighting styles supported by different weapons/casting aides.
Style 1
His first style of combat involves using a pair of guns that he hides under his coat, each one sporting conditional enchantments that he sets up beforehand during his off time.
  • SMG
    • The ammo of the SMG is enchanted with 'Frost Touch', which is set to go off when the bullets are propelled at the speed they'd normally only reach when fired. This spell causes the bullets to freeze whatever they come in contact with, which is used primarily to stall enemies, control their movement, and freeze them in place, but can also be used for other, more practical purposes.
    • The gun itself also has a spell marked on it that he can activate by channeling mana into it, but is only used in sticky situations when he needs cover fire but has run out of ammo.
  • Pistol
    • The ammo of the Pistol is enchanted with 'Frag Burst', which is set to go off when the bullets collide with something at the velocity they'd normally only reach when fired. This spell causes the bullets to fragment on collision, which is primarily used to increase the internal damage they cause to whatever he shoots, but can also be used for external damage by firing at a surface that the fragments can rebound off of, but this tactic is risky so he rarely employs it.

Style 2
His second style of combat involves using a Staff that is normally in plain sight strapped to his back, either to his coat or backpack depending on the situation. The staff sports a variety of water elemental spells carved into it, as well as magic stones worked into the head of the staff in case of mana depletion.

Home Country: Yoendra

Personality: While a little bit self-important, Finlay always values his comrades. He always takes care to address their needs and concerns, and makes a habit of checking in on them. One could say he's rather kind and respectful towards others, but without realizing it Finlay eventually developed a Leader Complex; he always stands up to the leadership role and takes charge of the situation, even if it isn't his place to. Leading had always come naturally to him, so he does it without really thinking about it. While leading, however, he always takes the strengths of his team into account and works to utilize them as best he can, even if he doesn't like the individuals themselves. He's also a dedicated patriot, with much love for his country. This doesn't cause him to dislike those from other countries, unless those individuals show any open disdain for Yoendra.

Notes:
  • Typically, Finlay keeps his staff in plain sight while hiding his guns so that anyone looking to attack him is more focused on the staff, leading to him having an element of surprise when he pulls out his guns instead (since they can be drawn more easily and quickly)
  • He has backup ammo for his guns, of course, but should he run out of ammo entirely or be in a situation where reloading isn't convenient, he'll draw his staff and begin using his more impactful elemental spells
  • Finlay also has a flying stone, but he doesn't mind walking either
  • He also memorized the runes to direct cast a simple healing spell in case of emergency
  • He loves seafood, as he grew up in a port town
  • Finlay has a deep-seeded distrust of Runecrafters, believing that they are incarnations of Mana's wrath; even worse if they are powerful themselves
  • Finlay has an above average-sized mana pool

History: Finlay was born and raised in a port town in Northwest Yoendra to well-meaning, upper-middle-class parents. Despite the financial security, Finlay was nonetheless raised to be a hard worker and team player. Even so, there was one thing he grew to disdain; Runecrafters. Being raised in Yoendra, it was only natural that he was taught the story of Mana many times by his parents (albeit through Yoendran lenses), and this caused him to form the popular opinion that Runecrafters were dangerous to the country that he loved so much. The fact that his parents, like many around him, used the threat of "If you don't behave, the ghost of Mana will show up and burn you up" to keep him and his two younger sisters in line only exaggerated the predjudism. While he'll continue treating them respectfully, Finlay refuses to get too friendly with known Runecrafters, and insists on keeping a close watch over them. He never even thought to think twice about the way they taught him about Mana, since everyone else he grew up around was taught about her the same; as a power-hungry monster of a person that led the capital of the country to ruin.

Thanks to good genes, Finlay had a lot of affinity for magic and was able to take the magic affinity test fairly early on as a kid. Naturally, he began practicing magic almost immediately afterwards. As he got older, his drive to become a skilled mage only continued to grow as he wanted to be able to protect his family and country. This naturally led to him applying to attend Isunia, at which he was proud to succeed. 5 years later, upon hearing that the Heartstone of the dreaded Mana had been located, Finlay knew he just had to take part in seeing to the stone's destruction so that no other Runecrafter may use it to further the destruction Mana had brought upon Yoendra.

Relationships:
  • Parents (Currently Unnamed)
    • Finlay is very fond of his parents, and is greatly appreciative of how they pushed him to be the best he can be.
  • Younger Sisters (Currently Unnamed)
    • He absolutely adores his two little sisters, who also happen to be twins. They mutually love their big brother, and would frequently see him as their protective knight/bodyguard whenever he stood between them and any boys their age that bullied them.
