Fujiwara no Mokou

Really, what was the vampire's issue? The insects were ugly and probably painful but it wasn't like they were much of a threat to someone like her. Probably? There was something weird about them, they did seem awful squishy for insects and, as someone who had spent the best part of the last thousand years in Japan's forests, Mokou could say with some confidence that she was fairly versed in what insects tended to be like.

Crunchier.

But with everyone firing bullets, running around like crazy, or just plain cutting through them, at least it was now clear enough to see what the real reason was: they were soft because they were babies. That was one big centipede.

... should they even be letting the miko anywhere near this thing?

Still, it was big enough that it would take a lot more effort than a simple fireball to kill this. And going the full danmaku route was probably out; the forest might not catch fire given the current conditions, but everyone else would still have to worry about all the fire floating around. Or, in the extreme case, the lack of oxygen and overall temperature--the spell card rules really did make things a lot more convenient with having fire that didn't actually need to be hot.

Since she was already flying, that made the choice pretty simple: just dive into the thing feet-first, let the kick do whatever damage it did (mostly to her legs) and stagger it, because the more important part--

Was the erupting plume of fire afterwards.

Some Hall

"A circle that summons Niyar and only Niyar," the hundi said, inspecting the sheet of paper, nodding, and then handing over another blank copy. "The difficulty in modification is the point."

She stood up, leaning against the demon and tapping her fingers on the staff. "Modifying summoning is dangerous. The traditional circles are designed to be augmented by all sorts of ritual to provide the power needed, and the beginner summoners there are protected by their own lack of power. If they modify something without understanding, taking the broad instructions given and pointing to something else... it will probably take no notice. But even then, you must know the stories--a weak apprentice tries to summon a fey for help, but botches it and calls forth the unseelie and a far higher price...

"Someone with the strength to be a true mage is even more in danger. They can skip all the ritual, the strength of their call no longer limited by knowledge. The stories of a foolish child who hastily modifies a circle that barely described a sex demon in a search for vengeance, and calls forth something far... more. Something the meagre protections they created cannot hold, or maybe they thought that through and instead make a deal at a price far too high," Gisela shook her head, pacing a little. "So, I created these circles. Without intimate knowledge of what you hope to summon, then they cannot be modified successfully. Even if far more mana is used than they require, it only strengthens the bindings.

"Anyone who learns enough to change them is someone I would be happy to call a colleague rather than an apprentice. We have nothing so formal but the same principals apply," she finished. And, in the case of this one, maybe the experience would teach her how to negotiate with powerful entities without offending them. "Until then... well, I have circles prepared for Niyar, Lamplighters, Sylphs, Imps..."

She paused. "Oh, and incubi are mostly safe. Or succubi, whichever you prefer."

Once Again Silenna's Place

One moment, outside, the next--dropped upside down in the workshop, the witch's lack of height quite apparent now that she wasn't high in the air. Even the alchemist seemed somewhat stumped by the thud, looking up from... okay, she wasn't working, this appeared to be her dinner.

"Yes, I brought him from the outside world. I trust this counts as proof?" After the nod, she continued. "Excellent. But remember, there are still some secrets in this place that shouldn't get out, and if he learns them..."

For a moment, there was all the magical weight and presence that could be expected of a Witch, a feeling that the world was fraying around them--

"Well, he'll just have to stay here with you until the rest of the world catches up. Can't say how long that will be~"

With that, she was gone again, leaving Silenna blinking at her temporary apprentice. "You want some soup?"
Miina Malina

Miina shrank a little at the reprimand. Here they were, soldiers and heroes and survivors of weird experiments and she was causing trouble just introducing herself... not that being surrounded with all these scary types helped... "Umm... s-sorry... you're w-welcome?"

That last part was directed at Arton, although Miina's eyes only briefly glanced in his direction before drifting over towards Eve. More specifically, Eve's tail.

What did it feel like? Ah, she just wanted to reach out and touch, but that would be rude. It looked kind of dragony, but what did a dragon feel like? Would it be all rough and bumpy like a crocodile or more like some snake or lizard? That wasn't accounting for the size difference, either... so probably smooth and soft? That would be nice. Ahh, her fingers were just itching at the thought.

"P-Pretty..."
Miina Malina

She'd only just arrived but already the soldiers were in open retreat. Not that Miina could claim any responsibility for that one; she just provided a little incomplete healing and a few ice spells in trade from behind cover... which only looked more inadequate next to the absolute torrent the other mage pulled out to whittle down the escapees. The healing had to come for something, right? Even if it was insufficient, they wouldn't think she was here to spy and going easy on the invaders, would they?

Maybe she should just run while everyone was distracted–crap they were already looking this way. And after that crystal escape she wouldn't have time for her plan B.

Myaaaaaa...

Standing in line for introductions, Miina fiddled with her sleeves and... well, it wasn't eye contact. Mostly it was looking at the larger Mystral's chest, since that was about right and basically straight ahead.

"Ummm... Miina M-Malina. I'm j-j-just l-l-l... my brother. In O-Osprey. There w-was a checkpoint, g-g-g–going around." Eight, it was hard enough to explain things normally and now she was worried they were going to kill her for being too incompetent to not be a plant. Under the coat, her tail curled protectively around.

If she wasn't mumbling so much, she'd look more bored than scared.
Silenna's Place

"Notes. Memorisation. I can't have you relaying findings if your brain won't hold them," the alchemist said, moving away from the door to grab an already heavily-covered scrap of something and start adding to it. "If you can manage reading those and being careful with your hands, I won't have to watch you every step of the process for actual alchemy.

"Just get that proof first."

Some Hall

"That's how summoners work, you know. You'd have to be very desperate, or very stupid, to draw up a circle and make a deal in a hurry," the red-skinned demon answered, "It used to be that Gisela promised battle and would make up for it in other ways if we went too long without a good fight. Now..."

The demon's smirk turned back into a grin and then a laugh at the second question. "Are you kidding? This place is great, all these legends that I'd never have reason to fight on my own, and that Gisela never tangled with, and if she takes a little break here I can try and hit them up? Much easier than trying to butter up the goddesses and get to the afterlife."

This was when the hundi came bustling back in, carrying reams and reams of paper... and sticks of charcoal. Lots of charcoal. "As Krysia isn't explaining, the boundaries of the world hold a lot less of a meaning for demons than they do for mortals," she brushed a hair behind her ear and knelt, drawing out one design, "Fairies have an odd relationship too, for all they live within it. And summoners, too, with enough experience. Normally, this place would be impervious to demonic interference but as long as it's only Krys, Miss Stormcaller won't take offence."

"Now," the mage said, brushing some dust off her knees as she rose and gesturing down at the pile of supplies, "You'll need to start by copying that circle."
Samurai

The samurai's reaction to Zhao's choice of magic was... surprisingly heated, the ghost launching a furious counterattack to the talismans with a snarled "Foreign witch!" If they were doing something to him, it was hard to tell; certainly, the long sword he was swinging wasn't flinging razor wind everywhere, but that could just be the lack of wind-up limiting him. It didn't make the storm of flashing steel he was engaging unarmed much more pleasant, or any less likely to cut off an arm if he slipped up in the slightest. At least it was keeping the samurai from taking up his other weapon.

As before, Tera was overwhelming the ghastly monk. Unlike before, the well of reinforcements didn't appear to be running dry, even as the defeated struggled to regain their forms: two thundering booms showed that, seemingly disappointed with the performance of the arquebusiers, their opposition had scaled up to outright cannons, one targeting the blatant monstrosity... and the other Mae, no doubt trying to eliminate the the one thing keeping this from being overwhelming with sheer numbers. It wasn't helping with the visibility either; between the gunpowder and the incense, the air was getting quite smoky.

What wasn't expected was the next defence to come bounding out of the murk. Huge, definitely bigger than the actual examples anyone would have seen, and not quite a lion nor quite a dog. A matched pair, of course, one with its mouth kept open and the other at least shut for now... but undeniably less stone-like or carved than komainu generally were. On the plus side, while obviously mystical and inhuman, at least they weren't focused on a single target: one was beelining straight for Masaru, and the other had split off to force back Arisa's flanking. They'd find out in just a moment that for all these beasts looked like flesh and blood, when it came to weight and resilience, it really was like fighting some guardian statues.
Miina Malina

Travelling overland from Costa del Sol... what had she been thinking? Actually, she had probably been thinking "well, if my brother did it then that must mean I could and should do it as well," but it was something Miina had really come to regret. As nice as these new clothes were, she'd ended up changing back for half the journey until the climate (and surroundings) were more accommodating to so many layers and frills. Not just because it was more comfortable to dress familiarly when nobody was around to judge...

Still, the journey had been challenging. In hindsight, starting from a trading port should have spelled it out: most trade with Osprey was (had been?) by sea. The land routes weren't the best and Miina had meandered her way to the Edreni border in trying to stick to roads most of the time. The rest was down to plain getting lost.

It was all only made worse by the state of anything near the border. Well... places on this side were inhabited, just worse for wear. She stuck out like a sore thumb: clean, in fine clothing, and well-fed. If she were anyone else, an air of confidence, too. Miina had offered healing to begin with, then taken to avoiding settlements whenever possible. A decision only reinforced by the increasing presence of black-clad soldiery as she passed; even Miina had heard enough to avoid these invaders. No chance was she risking the main pass in this situation...

Unfortunately, this mountain route that she had picked wasn't as quiet as Miina had hoped; the clamour of battle rang out ahead and there was only one choice: wait or investigate. Waiting would mean hoping the victor was friendly or didn't come back this way, since her outfit didn't lend itself to hiding. That... too many unknowns was scary. Miina was curious, too.

So she crept forward, looking down towards the abandoned village and the battle therein.

Sure enough, one side was the invading soldiers. The other... was this just a band if travellers? Their attire wasn't consistent at all. Another Mystrel from Osprey, it seemed, stood out the most. Maybe not even travellers, then; this woman could be defending her home. She should help. Miina wanted to help. But how? These were soldiers and experienced looking warriors and she... wasn't.

Then—

Drop her pack, draw her sword, and run. Good, he was behind cover, that made it easier and—

"Dignified" was the furthest thing from Miina's scramble down into the village, the red cat barely remaining upright at times before dropping into cover with a flurry of sleeves and coat, sword in her left hand carefully held low to avoid offence. Not that she was too focused on that, zeroing in on Arton's injury.

"L-l-l-l– I c-can heal‚ I'll help," the newcomer explained–so much as the white-gold glow around her right hand didn't.

Fujiwara no Mokou

With the green miko's statement providing a rather welcome distraction from the state of the revolting boar--seriously, what was that rabbit doing, going around phrasing things like that? Showing Kaguya around was one thing, but it wasn't as if there was any sneaking involved... Eientei was hers, after all, and it wasn't as if she was obliged to never leave it. Well, Kaguya's introduction to Japanese customs had been around her own childhood, so maybe the norms had stuck more...

Of course, that was when the miko started screaming and there were now a whole lot of centipedes. That was... concerning. Like any reasonable, experienced inhabitant of Gensokyo at this point, she opted to take the smart choice and get the hell off the ground. Except... they were in the trees, too? Which now meant one of them was on her.

From the look of the boar, getting bit by these things would be excruciatingly painful. Then they'd eat her. She didn't think it was likely, but the last thing she wanted to add to the world by being eaten was some immortal venomous centipede that would go on to be a weird antisocial youkai in a couple of centuries. So she took the one that had landed on her shoulder and burned.

One crispy centipede later and... how the hell were there so many of these? The shrine maiden sort of had the right idea, spraying ofuda everywhere--though that added dodging her wild attempts to the whole issue of dodging the centipedes--but cleaning all of them up was going to be a pain. Well, a pain with other people here, the forest seemed damp enough that it might not catch alight. Still, her usual less danmaku-heavy methods would work quite well, here: just point and boom. One reasonably-sized fiery explosion, one less patch of centipedes.

Hm, hopefully this pace wasn't too slow...
