I think OCs; with the Buffy characters being NPCs. I would also set it out of Sunnydale; have our characters be in other cities and such - Third line of defence as it were. Maybe have "us" briefly visit and such. Or have us originate and then move out, or a similar vine you could have each character be YAHF; costumes leaving a fragment/spark "our" character build up from. There are plenty of ways to do this.

I haven't followed the books; are they absolutely a required read?

I have a few questions.

Earth - Technology-wise; modern as in now, real-world. Or Modern as in anime-world. Ex: Virtual Reality systems, etc.

I was thinking of having my character be human, from the other world and be a warrior/artificer. Is that okay?
