Bio

I'm kinda boring, so there isn't much to tell.

I go by Sumi. I like to write, though it's getting a little harder to. My characters are different facets of myself, so as I get to know them, I get to know myself. I've been writing since I was a wee fifth grader and look at me now, almost eight years later.

Ideas are always interesting and I'm always willing to listen to them.

Etsuko Tanaka and Christopher Nocte // Renata Manor

With the majority of the Sentinels breaking up to go train and prepare for war, Etsuko was at a loss for what to do. She couldn’t find her way to the library and for some odd reason, she couldn’t find Calypso. She had a feeling that Helle was somewhere else, so for once, she actually had time for herself in the Renata Manor.

She figured that she could find her way outside and to the rose maze. It was something that she quite enjoyed from her first stay at the manor and she wouldn’t mind seeing it again. It took her a little longer than she would’ve liked to make her way to the front steps, but once she did, she found the rose maze right away.

Since she was already so disoriented by the labyrinth that was Renata Manor, she stayed by the roses that could be seen from the front steps. She would smell one or two, gently caress the petals of a few, but mostly seemed lost in thought.

The flowers had a reaction as soon as she touched them, one that would spread to nearby flowers. To begin with, they were a soft red, but at her touch blue cracks began to slowly form, beginning to spread through the rest of the flower as well. From the ones she touched the color spread to the others, until many of them along that side of the hedge had turned the same blue.

“Whoa, I've never seen anything like that before.” The voice came from behind her, and it was a familiar one to her despite the short amount of time the two knew each other. Quietly, Christopher walked up, staying to the other side of the hedge as he looked over the roses that she had changed.

Though he didn't touch any of the flowers, they still changed, though did so strangely. The red began to slowly fade away, the flowers becoming truly colorless; not white and not black, but almost a sort of see through. He didn't seem to notice, simply bringing up a hand to point at the blue flowers and say, “I like that blue.”

She was startled out of her thoughts when she heard Christopher’s voice, her eyes wide as she turned around and watched him approach. The Diviner hadn’t even been aware that the color of the roses had changed and didn’t see them until he pointed them out.

Quietly, she watched as the roses went from red to, what she figured, was his…colorless. It made her blink. How peculiar.

“I think Ayano says I smell like this kind of blue.”

“What? Oh, right, how she experiences the world.” He nodded slightly. “It doesn't surprise me too much. This place is... weird. Color changing flowers doesn't surprise me that much…” He brought up his hand to rub at the back of his head as he so often did, before gesturing into the hedge maze and asked, “So, uh, would you like to walk for a little? I don't mind and I don't want to stop you.”

She smiled a little at his invitation and nodded.

“Please, lead the way.”

He nodded slightly, turning and beginning to walk. His hands slipped down into his pockets, and a few moments he was silent before he asked, “So, you came here before, huh?”

She nodded again, keeping her hands folded in front of her.

“Yes, with Calypso. Lady Renata seemed to take interest in my foresight.”

He blinked, glancing over to her. “So you really have it, then? Foresight, I mean. The ability to see into the future?”

Another nod was given. ”That’s the one. Although, I know there are a lot of…dishonest people who claim to have my ability…”

“Yeah, I know.” Christopher said with a shrug and a nod. “I’ve met plenty of them on my travels... and Dubois usually takes care of them. Gets pretty annoying after awhile…”

“I can” imagine…”

“Yeah. But you really have it, so that's... pretty impressive, to be honest. It's not a very common ability, for obvious reasons.”

“Yes. I’m truly thankful to the Divines for blessing me with this ability.”

"Er, yeah, if they gave it to you definitely. So, uh, how does it work? Do you just see things, or…?”

"Hm? Oh, I use tarot cards. Would you like me to read your fortune?”

He blinked in surprise, startled. “What, just like that? It's that easy?”

She blinked in response, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “It is.”

The answer seemed to confound him slightly, and left him silent for a few moments. As they passed, it was as if the hedge maze answered for him. Suddenly the narrow path widened into an opening, which revealed one of what was most likely many fountains hidden by the dark green shrubbery walls. Near this fountain were several stone benches.

Giving a slow nod finally, Christopher said, “Sure, I wouldn't mind that at all.”

She began to walk through the opening the maze provided, sitting at one of the stone benches. Reaching for a small pouch attached to her belt, she took out a stack of cards. The backs were painted the same blue as the roses that surrounded her and a minimalist sheep was the only embellishment on them.

She patted the spot on the bench next to her with a small smile. “It’s easier if you sit.”

“Er, right.” Having been briefly unsure of what to do, the grey-haired young man quickly sat down on the bench as well, on the opposite side. He folded both hands in front of him, a slightly nervous motion as he looked to the cards. “Alright, so, uh, how is this going to work?”

Her thumb ran across the back of the cards absentmindedly as she waited for him to sit down. Once he did, she held out the deck to him.

“Shuffle these for as long as you feel necessary and then give them back to me.”

He nodded slightly, reaching over to carefully take the cards. He began to gently shuffle them, as if nervous of breaking them (or, knowing Christopher, accidentally setting them alight with a spark from his gauntlets), but as time passed he began to go a little faster. For about thirty seconds he shuffled the cards, before holding them back to her. “Here you go.”

She took the cards back and drew the first three, keeping them face down. Pointing from her left to right, she said, “This represents your past, present and future. Remember that the future can always change.”

He nodded slightly, looking down to the cards. “Seems pretty straight forward for fortune telling.”

A small smile appeared on her face as she went to turn his “past” card. “I think fortune telling was always meant to be straightforward.”

“Not from what I've seen- and apparently the cards agree, what the fuck-?”

Christopher sat up where he sat, before hunching over the card slightly. The reason why, though surprising, was quite simple; the card that she had flipped over was blank, completely white, as if nothing had ever been detailed into them.

“Do you keep blank ones in there, or something?”

She blinked, confused as to why the card was blank. “No, I don’t…”

She went ahead and flipped the other two, finding those to be blank as well. It was then that she flipped through her entire deck in a somewhat panicked frenzy; they were all blank.

“W-What happened…”

As Etsuko began flipping through the deck and revealed that all the cards were blank, Christopher actually went to standing as he watched, blinking rapidly. “This doesn't usually happen, does it?”

She shook her head furiously, tears beginning to form in her eyes. “N-No…”

“Oh, shi-“ He didn't quite finish the word, his hand going up to rub at the back of his head quickly. “Er, uh... Is there anything we can do?”

A small hiccup escaped from Etsuko as she held the cards in her hand limply. “M-Maybe w-we can ask L-Lady Renata?”

"Er, yeah, that's a good idea. Uh, how the hell are we going to find her, though?”

She looked around and sniffled as she put her cards away. “U-Umm, R-Richard w-was usually around to help me get out, b-but Lady Renata said something about being c-calm…”

“Ah, shit, I hate riddles like that-“

“There's no riddle involved, Mr. Nocte, it's just a matter of remaining calm. Something the both of you seem incapable of doing, at this moment.”

“OH WHAT THE HELL-?!” Christopher nearly tumbled over the bench to the side as he jumped, thanks to the voice that came from behind him. There, of course, stood the ever undetectable Lady of Demons, who raised her eyebrow slightly.

“I sense there's a problem out here? Is Mr. Nocte overstepping his bounds? Should I call his mother to ground him, Ms. Tanaka?”

Another hiccup escaped when Karin appeared. Etsuko’s eyes widened as she saw her and a hint of blush appeared at the Lady’s questions. She shook her head and brought her cards back out.

“N-No, C-Christopher didn’t do a-anything. T-There’s something wrong with the cards…” She held them out to Karin limply, trying not to let any more tears form and fall.

Lady Renata's hand went forwards, gently taking the cards from Etsuko. With one fluid flick of her thumb she looked through the cards, noting how they were all white even though she seemed to only pay them less than half of her attention. It was as if she expected them to be blank. “You attempted to read Mr. Nocte's fortune, then?”

"Y-Yes, ma’am.”

"Then in that case I would say the Manu Propria is well aware of your presence at this point, and they do not want you to have any idea of what's coming for him.” With quick, deft moments the Lady of Demons turned the cards over and began to rapidly shuffle them, coming to a stop after a few seconds. “You'll probably achieve the same result for the rest of your companions, in all likelihood. I would refrain from trying to read their fortunes until I've taught you how to push back their influence a little more. Small questions you might get away with, but a general reading will be perceived as too much by them.”

She gently slid one finger down the backs of the cards, dragging her nail slowly along them. Though there was no immediate visible change, she flipped them over and thumbed through them briskly again; once more, all of the images had returned to the cards. Turning them back again, the Lady of Demons held them back out to their owner. “Irritating, I know.”

Her tears had faded by that point and her worried expression was replaced with a small frown. She took the cards back and put them away, giving a slight bow of her head.

“T-Thank you. I look forward to what you have to teach me later on.”

"I look forward to seeing what you learn. For the time being, however…” The Lady of Demons held her hand out again, but rather than taking it was to give. In it a black card appeared as Lady Renata once more performed the feat of turning shadows into something solid, before placing it down next to Etsuko. “If it happens again, shuffle that card into the deck and the issue should resolve itself. Don't ask the same question again if it causes the cards to go blank.”

With that, the Lady of Demons slowly looked to Christopher... And then she gave a dismissive wave of her hand, turning to begin walking away. “I have nothing to give to you.”

Christopher's jaw dropped ever slightly, in his shock at suddenly being caught off guard by the bait and switch. “Uh... thanks.”

Etsuko watched as Lady Renata created a black card, something that would definitely stand out amongst her deck. She took it and placed it on top of her deck, a small smile appearing on her face.

“T-Thank you.”

She turned to Christopher and gave him a sheepish expression.

“Sorry about…all of this.”

Briefly Christopher watched the Lady of Demons leave, before he glanced to Etsuko; by the time he looked back, Lady Renata was gone. Blinking, he looked back to Etsuko fully, before he gave a slight shake of his head. “It's not a problem. Just, er... Just glad I didn't screw up your cards beyond fixing.”

”I don’t think you could’ve done that. N-Not t-to say that y-you’re not powerful o-or anything, b-but…it takes a certain kind of magic to ruin tarot cards. W-Well, not i-in a physical sense…”

"Er, yeah, I guess so…” Briefly glancing around, he then bristled slightly, before saying, “So, I'm just going to, er... Head on. I've got a feeling the Paladin is looking for me and, well, I don't want to be found…”

"H-Huh? O-Oh, r-right. U-Um, w-would you like me to keep you company? I-It isn’t a fortune, b-but I-I want to make up for it. O-Or lack thereof.”

"No, no, it's alright. We'll hang out later but, right now, I need to move a little more... quickly than just walking. I hope you understand.”

She nodded and gave a polite smile as she stood up. “Oh, alright. Um, be seeing you.”

With that, she turned and left.

And he, on the other hand, looked back and forth with a shifty look in his eye before taking a seemingly random direction away from the spot.
Etsuko Tanaka // The Dining Room

Etsuko hardly registered what was going on, seemingly content with just poking her food around her plate. Hearing Dalious’ voice made her jump, since she had assumed Calypso was sitting by her and not the pirate.

She gave a polite smile and pushed her half-eaten plate in his direction.

”Please, go right ahead.”

She had lost her appetite anyway.
Etsuko Tanaka // The Dining Room

Returning to the Renata Manor was something akin to coming home. Albeit, a very red, somewhat eerie but still beautiful home. When her world finally stopped spinning, she was certainly surprised to see a home cooked meal in front of her. The smells made her think of the cottage she and Calypso shared and made her nostalgic for their home in their small village.

The conversation between Lady Renata and her guests immediately set an urgent and tense atmosphere, making Etsuko feel somewhat uncomfortable eating the comfy meal in front of her. The air was relatively thick until the sound of a violin could be heard from the end of the table.

She looked up from her plate and watched as the youthful looking man came walking towards the front, smiling to herself as she hummed along to the sounds of the violin. She briefly wondered where he was during her stay. Perhaps he was a new resident? His flamboyant nature juxtaposed greatly with Lady Renata’s, and even Richard’s.

She was about to introduce herself when she heard another male voice speak up near her, causing the Diviner to jump slightly. She looked up at the newcomer and watched as his eye settled on her. The young woman blinked, wondering if there might’ve been something on her face when he got on one knee and took her hand from where it had been on the table. It wasn’t until he kissed it gently that her face turned bright red.

Her face stayed bright red as he introduced himself. She started fidgeting slightly in her seat as he began to sit, embarrassed by what had just happened.

As the bard began singing, Etsuko admitted to herself that his voice did possess a calming quality. However, she managed to glance at Lady Renata and wondered whether these two men were supposed to diffuse the tense atmosphere on purpose or if she found their sudden appearances to be a nuisance. It seemed so by the long tea sip Karin had taken after Dimitirius entered the room.

Both men asked everyone how they were, perhaps to introduce themselves. Etsuko was so embarrassed—and probably shocked by the attention Ian had given her—that she just poked the food on her plate with her fork. She could hardly give a response. The Diviner also wasn’t sure if she was allowed to encourage the men’s behavior and found it easier to stay quiet.
Etsuko Tanaka and Ambrosia Nocte // We're Off to See the Wizard the Lady of Demons

Etsuko happily received the pats on her head, nodding it when the Divine asked if she was a friend of her "baby boy's." She had already deduced that said baby boy was Christopher and she figured that they were friends, since she did latch onto him after the attack on the castle. No pondering over the meaning of friendship here.

Chi was mumbling something under her breath about how "the damned bastard would've gotten lost without me anyway..."

The Divine's joy was contagious and Etsuko found herself smiling almost as much as Calypso normally did. She also nodded her head vigorously when Ambrosia mentioned how beautiful Calypso was.

Quietly, she listened as Drosil and Ambrosia exchanged questions and answers. She was surprised to hear that the mage--along with his brother--were Divineborn. She couldn't help but tilt her head slightly as she watched him interact with the Divine. The fortune teller herself had a few questions to ask, but she didn't feel the same hungry curiosity that the mage did when it came to inquiries.

As Ambrosia moved to the side and seemed to make her rounds around the group, Etsuko watched with a smile. There was something comforting about watching the patron Divine of Barcea and she could truly understand why she happened to be the Divine of Love. Her personality was extremely motherly and Etsuko couldn't help but giggle as she thought of how similar their motherliness was. Of course, there was probably a large chance that Ambrosia was actually a mother and Etsuko was just...well, herself.

She figured it was a rare opportunity to meet a Divine and started to wonder whether she had any questions to ask. Drosil seemed to have asked similar questions to the ones she had thought of. And then, almost suddenly, Etsuko's smile gave way to complete and utter horror when she realized who was present.

"O-Oh I-I'm so sorry, L-Lady of the Abyss! U-umm I-I thank you so much for the gift y-you've given me b-but I-I really hope I haven't been using it i-incorrectly o-or anything...W-When I get back to my village, I-I'll be sure to give you a-a proper o-offering a-and if I'm using m-my gift in anyway that displease you, I-I'll stop..."

Baaa.

When the Divine turned to face Etsuko and come to a stop, she seemed to drift a little far for just a moment as she did so. She positively beamed at Etsuko, giving a few nods even as she spoke.

"Oh, my dear, don't worry at all! You've been doing just fine, I've been completely fine with what you're doing, and so are a few of the others! You're a sweetheart, just keep being like that!"

Etsuko almost cried at Ambrosia's words.

"R-Really?"

Ambrosia chuckled gently, before she reached out to gently hold both of her cheeks, giving them gentle squeezes. "Of course, my dear! You're doing just fine! Please don't worry about it at all!"

Etsuko simply nodded her head, trying not to cry tears of joy from the sheer fact she hadn't been misusing her gift.

"W-Wait, you said that a few others were pleased as well..."

"Mhm! A few others have noted what you're doing, and they're fairly happy with it!" Still the Divine beamed. "So don't worry about it at all, you have more than a few Divines on your side!"

She blinked, clearly in awe that one: the Divines were actually paying attention her, and two: a few of them were even on her side.

"O-Oh...U-Umm...c-can I know who they are? S-So I c-can thank them properly w-when I get home?"

"Mmmm, I don't think they'll mind..." Thinking for a moment the Divine soon nodded before saying, "Alright then! Both Yumio and Silvae are happy with what you've been doing with them!"

"The Divines of Freedom and Compassion..." She looked down for a moment before looking back up, nodding and smiling brightly.

"T-Thank you, Lady of the Abyss! I-I'm honored a-and very happy t-that we got a chance to meet a-and talk."

The Divine gave a gentle warm laugh as she nodded, before finally letting go of Etsuko's cheeks once again. "Oh, of course my dear! Just keep doing as you are and I couldn't be any more happy with you! Is there anything else I can do for you today?"

Etsuko shook her head, still smiling.

"N-No, u-umm, I-I think that's all I had in mind."

"Alright then! Don't be a stranger now!" And off the Divine continued, happily humming her way along.
Chikako Momomiya, Alsius Argentum and Christopher Nocte

The Gifted woman was trying to fall asleep when she heard blood curdling screams outside of her room. She figured one of the maids had just been flashed something inappropriate and turned in her bed. More screams echoed through the hallway, causing her to eventually wake up very, very irritated. She grumbled as she walked to the door, making a mental note that Joachim was living up to his Wanderer title.

Upon opening the door with a tired and irritated expression, a splatter of blood that might've ended up on the door ended up on her cheek. It took her a moment to process what exactly she was seeing: bloodied hallways, corpses on the ground and dark figures making their way to her.

That last one made her wake up and her sweater was thrown into her room as she removed her bone blade from her arm to deflect a hit that was meant for her shoulder. She gritted her teeth slightly as another assailant came from her other side, to which she brought an arm up and a scythe blade was exposed. Chi shoved the original one backwards and kicked the second away from her.

“Divines fucking damnit, where are you, Joachim?!”

In chaos, there was no sign of her fellow Gifted. Wherever he was, he had been gone long before the violence had started up, so there was no hope of finding him in the middle of it. However, Chikako had other problems, considering the two attackers that had practically gotten on top of her with more in the wings... Until, suddenly, another shape shot through. Due to the speed of the movement one might have thought it was the Wanderer himself for just a moment, but the colors were all wrong. Instead of black and purple it was silver and red, and much too large for that matter.

Instead it was the Direwolf who came to a stop, sword stabbed through the head of one of the assailants to pierce through the throat of the next. He easily dragged both bodies forward along his blade for a few feet before he brought his thrust to a stop, ripping the blade away from the both of them afterwards. This certainly wasn't the Wanderer, who now kept as close to mercy as he possibly could; this was Alsius Argentum, whose brutality had not dulled.

“Hm. And here I thought these were friends of yours. Where's the Phantasm?”

Though she'd never admit it, Chikako was thankful to see Alsius. She rolled her shoulder slightly, glancing at the two dark figures that he had just taken down.

“The hell if I know. He's probably wandering.”

Well, she probably wasn't wrong.

Movement came from the corner of her eye and she was surprised to see that it was the two assailants from earlier. Frowning, she sprinted towards one of them, slashing across its chest before sending her blade piercing through its body. She didn't quite consider it killing, since they kept coming back and she doubted they were alive to begin with. The fact that she had to justify her actions in her mind in case Joachim came around the corner and made her feel like a small child being reprimanded by a parent seemed to irritate her more as she went after the second attacker.

For this one, she had jumped, swirling her blade from behind until it made contact with its neck and carved right through, ultimately beheading him. She landed with a small thump and glanced at the Direwolf.

“What are these things?”

When the foes got back up once again, the Direwolf looked towards them with a very narrowed glare, and continued to keep an eye on them afterwards even as Chikako seemed to finish them. However, even the one that had its head cut off began to rise once again, and the Direwolf once more brought up his blade to take his usual stance, with his right palm forward and above the blade. There were others still surging down the hallway towards them, often dragging along the walls.

“Unnatural.”

With that single word said, he once more surged forwards. The tip of his blade targeted the headless attacker's sternum, piercing through and out the back. His right fist lashed out, striking the other one nearby in the stomach so hard it knocked it off its feet and sent it back. From there, his hand went back to his blade, and using both blades he lifted the attacker that he had stabbed through up and around, before flinging it forwards down the hallway, sending it crashing into the group. With this done he turned, lowering his blade as he began to walk.

“We're heading around to the east of the inner circle. I have no doubt that's where most of them will be.”

Chikako did her best to fend off the ones approaching from the wings. While they were down, she turned to Alsius and gave a nod.

“Lead the way.”

At this point, she was trying to figure out a way to keep these unnatural attackers down. The more they kept standing, the more tired everyone would get. And that wouldn't be any good.

The Direwolf's decision to conserve energy was to take out those immediately in front of him, and then leave them far behind as they continued on through the hallways. It wasn't out of any sort of fear on the part of the Direwolf; after all, none of these strange attackers seemed to be able to land a hit on him, no matter how many times they stood up to try. It was with the goal of efficiency that he kept moving, making his way around the inner circle as quickly as he could.

He passed by the dead and dying, but one that was still alive brought him to a stop quite briefly. When the assassin crashed through the door right in front of him, he drew up rapidly into his stance, expecting it to fling towards him next. However, it apparently hadn't been sent through of its own volition, as the Divine Paladin's young student flung himself after it, pinning it to the ground. Rapidly he began striking it, arcs of electricity crackling out and around with each blow.

“JUST STAY DOWN YOU SON A WHOREMOTHER- WHAT THE HELL-?!” Suddenly, Christopher's world went sideways after the Direwolf stepped forwards towards him. The knight had grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, dragging him along as he yanked the young man to his feet without giving him a second glance. To begin with he didn't answer, but when he did it was quite (brutally) simple:

“Stop wasting time on non-threats and get to the Serios.”

“LET GO OF ME DAMMIT-!”

Chi was right behind Alsius--and now the Paladin's student--and she held up her blade to his neck and glared impatiently.

"Shut up and do what he says."

Without so much as turning around, she brought the back of her fist up, it slamming into the face of an attacker who might've thought to catch her off-guard.

The eye of the young man twitched once when the blade from someone who was supposed to be an ally was brought to his neck, and then again when she so easily smashed another attacker. Only then did he speak, almost muttering, “Divinesdammit I thought he was the only psychotic bastard I'd meet but, noooooo, I have to run into more-“ He yelped then as Alsius flung him forward so that he could take his stance. While Christopher stumbled before bringing both fists forward to take out one assassin, the Direwolf shot past to take out another three. Secure on his feet, the Paladin's student followed after Alsius, not without muttering, “I hate my life, I hate you all, fuck this shit, fuck that shit, fuck that thing's face, fuck its couch…”

So on and so forth.

Chi held up from behind, slashing and slamming the assassins with ease. She had thought of changing her weapons, mainly to make things slightly more interesting for her, but thought otherwise when they came in waves.

“Geez, they're like roaches. Bloodthirsty roaches.”

“-fuck this education, fuck this- Oh, I get it, because they swarm, right-?”

”Silence.”
Chikako Momomiya & The Wanderer

While Joachim went immediately to the front to take care of the archers, Chi handled the enemies he might've missed from behind. Her sweater deftly wrapped around her waist, she already had her bone katana jutting from her arm as she deflected and stabbed. Joachim might've kept to his no-killing rule, but to her, it was meant to be a bloodbath.

As she continued making a bloody mess of the H'kelan soldiers, her eyes went from their pinkish tint to a crimson red. They would turn into a much darker hue of red, one that matched the color of the blood she was spilling. Her expression was focused, her eyes never leaving whatever target may have come her way. It was a slightly disturbing scene, really. A small female, pigtails dipped in blood and a sword made from her own bone destroying any enemy that came before her.

In surprising contrast to Chi, Joachim remained completely calm and in control in the depth of the H'kelan line. Only a few knew what he looked like even as he began to lose control, and no one else would that day, even his enemies. That didn't mean he wasn't terrifying, however; being chased down by a blur with a very sharp blade was naturally very frightening for anyone who had to face it, even if he killed not a single soul. The fact he wasn't killing went missed in the chaos of the moment as his blade carved through weaker armor and found gaps in stronger.

Eventually there weren't any archers left near him, as all had fled away. It left him alone in the middle of a very hostile armed force as the enemy turned to try and close him in. They never quite managed to form a circle around him though, as he was simply much too fast, targeted the slightest exposed weakness to break out and through, into the next group of soldiers. So mobile he was that he had soon sliced his way back out, reaching Chi once again.

And, oddly enough, he swung his blade at hers, blocking it and keeping it away from the last man she had cut down. The look on Joachim's face wasn't angry, but more disappointed than anything, though he only looked to her for a moment before whirling, kicking the man on the ground so hard he was sent forwards into the legs of several other men, sending them all tumbling.

“Remember the deal we made, Chikako.”

She was surprised to feel her blade catch his and nearly snarled at him as he reminded her of their policy. As he went to kick the man tumbling into his comrades, she withdrew her sword and proceeded to reach into her spine to take out her whip.

“Yeah, yeah, at least I had my fun.”

For a short woman, her whip seemed to be at least double her length. Large swarms of enemy soldiers attempted to pile on top of her stationary position, but were swept away rather quickly. The vertebral spikes weren't penetrating any sort of skin, as that would probably kill them, so she used the blunt end to merely sweep them away. It wasn't any fun, she thought, but she was an honorable woman and would uphold her part of the deal.

Her traveling companion seemed pleased as she changed her tactics, and once more became focused on the battle raging on around them. His quick movements complemented the sweeping style she adopted with her whip, covering the holes she made in her attacks. Together, the two were completely unapproachable, overwhelming their foes with frightening ease. Years of fighting on the battlefield together showed in that moment, in just how coordinated and skilled they were.

With no warning towards Joachim, Chi suddenly retracted her whip, returning it into her back without so much as a grimace. She stretched her neck sideways, as if trying to get her spine back into its natural place, then reached into her thigh to pull out her femur. Its naturally club-like appearance quickly shifted into one of a more uniform cylinder and stretched the same way her whip had. Now narrower and longer, it resembled that of a bo staff. Giving it a slight twirl, she jutted it outwards towards the oncoming soldiers, who seemed to quite happy with the change of weapon.

She glanced at Joachim once before holding one end of the staff out towards him and leaving herself completely open. The man glanced over, and without hesitation moved to her, cutting one man in the process. Quickly his hand snapped out, grabbing a hold of the end of her new weapon tightly. With a bit of a smirk and a decent amount of strength, she started to swing him around, much like she did with her whip.

For the brief moment before she swung him, he seemed nervous- after she actually lifted him off his feet though, he once again became completely serious. She swung him around, and then at the end of her swing he released, spinning through the air with his sword as a slash blur as he flew past several H'kelans, striking them down.

For the first time, laughter erupted from the small woman as she shoved and hit any soldier who thought she'd be an open target after Joachim had left her staff. When he returned, she would have her staff out once more, ready to swing him back into the action.

Landing with a roll, Joachim sprung to his feet and then leapt backwards, once more towards Chi. Again, his hand went out to grab the staff, though this time in the same movement he sheathed his blade in one swift movement. His other hand shot up to grab the staff as well, and with surprising strength he whirled, suddenly lifting her off her feet as he swung her around instead.

She grinned at the change, holding on with one hand gripped tightly onto the bo staff and her free hand already uncovering a bone blade. It came from her upper wrist and she closed her fist to fully extend the blade. She slashed anyone who dared to come close, only letting go when her feet touched the ground. With the hand that gripped the bo staff, she lifted Joachim off the ground for another round of Phantasm slashing.

This time he didn't let go, being swung around and around. With each slash he sent H'kelans flying backwards, sending them tumbling away afterwards. As Chi brought herself to a swinging around to a stop he landed on the ground once again, quickly straightening; however, the two of them together had easily carved a large hole into the H'kelan forces, sending wounded limping and crawling away.

In the midst of the wounded and limping, Chi returned all of her weapons back into her body. She bent backwards, sideways and forwards as she made sure everything was put in its proper place. Heading over to Joachim, she rolled her shoulder a bit before landing a hearty slap on his back, grinning the entire time.

“Now THAT was a fight!”

The Wanderer actually stumbled forwards from the hit, squawking slightly before he quickly looked up to his traveling companion, frowning. “Yes, but it is not quite over... Do not celebrate so soon…”

She rolled her eyes.

“Even I know that much.”
Etsuko Tanaka and Christopher Nocte // A Hallway

The first time around, Etsuko didn’t get a chance to explore the castle. She had thought of trying to locate the castle’s library and reading everything it had to offer, but for once, the fortune teller didn’t feel like learning. She felt it necessary to give her mind a rest; after all, Lady Renata and Resalia were equally tough teachers, the former being much harder than the latter.

So, she chose to explore the castle walls. It was very much like she had imagined fairytale castles, decorated with Serio memorabilia and the like. It fascinated her quite a bit, and more than once, she had to dodge a servant or two since she was close to bumping into them.

While the Diviner's exploration may have been purely innocent, the Paladain's apprentice wasn't quite so. He knew that, somewhere in the castle and its grounds, that the Divine Paladin was probably off praying somewhere, and if he ended up getting spotted by his teacher then he'd be dragged into the whole affair. Christopher wanted to avoid that at all costs, so rather than staying still in his he decided to move... at least until he found a decent hiding spot.

Perhaps she should’ve kept her gaze forward, or else she wouldn’t have bumped into a darkly clad male. Unfortunately, she was too busy inspecting a tapestry that she was passing by that she ended up running straight into the male’s back.

“O-Oh! I-I’m sorry, I-I didn’t see you…”

What was probably a very solid collision for the small Diviner was barely more than a bump to Christopher. However, he still jumped in surprise, startled, as if he expected the source of the collision to be the Paladin grabbing him. Because of that he quickly turned as he took a sudden step forwards, looking back to her. Only after he looked down (as he had been looking up in anticipation of Damon) did he see it was her, and he relaxed some, letting go of the breath he had drawn in.

“Er, no problem at all. Should have been walking faster.”

She laughed a bit nervously, shaking her head.

“N-No, I should’ve been watching where I was going.”

She looked up (for he was quite a bit taller than she was) and tilted her head at him.

“Um, I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Etsuko Tanaka.”

He shook his head slightly in agreement at her statement, before he replied with, “Christopher Nocte.” As he said his name, he brought up a hand slightly in a gesture, lightly tapping his own chest before he dropped it again. “Seeing as you've introduced yourself, I'm guessing your not a servant. Friend of the royals?”

She thought about his question for a moment. Was she really a friend of the royals? Well, what really defined being a friend of someone else’s? She and Calypso were friends, very close friends in fact. But that was because they’ve been with each other for a long time and in that time, they’ve gotten to know each other quite well.

She probably didn’t realize it at first, but her expression grew more and more thoughtful as she pondered the schematics of friendship. At some point, she must’ve realized how she looked and an embarrassed blush appeared on her cheeks as she laughed nervously once again.

“A-Ah, I-I suppose. Our paths happened to cross and traveling in numbers is usually safer. What about you?”

As Christopher waited for her answer, he too realized that time was starting to tick by. Blinking once or twice as a confused expression came over his face, he almost brought his hand up to snap slightly to get her attention; thankfully she snapped out of it herself. His response came much more quickly, as he brought both shoulders up in a shrug, bringing his hands out some before he dropped them down again.

”The Prince asked my teacher for some help and I got dragged along with the whole deal. Met on the way up to Gurata.”

“Gurata? Oh, so you’re part of the party that just came back.”

“Yeah, I guess you could put it that way.”

She wasn’t sure whether she wanted to ask about what happened there. She had heard enough from the villagers on her way to the castle.

“Perhaps we’ll be traveling together soon.”

“Please don't tell me the Prince is already planning another... expedition. We just got back from the last one and I'm wary of these adventures since I got my throat slit.”

Her eyes widened right away.

“W-What?!”

“Er, uh- Exaggeration. You know how it is.” Christopher sometimes forgot that people weren't used to what could happen, especially to him.

She shook her head.

“A-Actually, I don’t…”

“… Er. Anyway.” Better to just move on, at this point.

“Um, r-right…” Really, it was hard to move on when images of whatever horrors her new acquaintance was talking about filled her mind.

Almost desperately Christopher tried to think of a way to change the subject, before finally saying: “So, you're from Barcea then, right?”

The question was enough to clear her mind of horrific images. She nodded and smiled.

“Yes! I live in a small village in the mountains.”

“East or north?”

“East!”

"Ah, I see. I've lived in the mountains to the north of Barcea for the first part of my life with my mom, before she sent me off with the Paladin.”

“Wow, you must’ve seen quite a bit in your travels. This is the farthest I’ve ever traveled, really.”

And then she blinked as something occurred to her.

“W-Wait, did you say the Paladin? A-As in the Divine Paladin?”

Slowly Christopher blinked, before reaching back to rub the back of his head some, looking away. Clearly, he wanted to come up with a way to steer the conversation away again, but just sighed before saying, “Yeah, the Divine Paladin. He's my teacher, has been for the past few years.”

Her eyes were wide with amazement. Clearly, she had bumped into a very special person. She almost wondered why she ended up in the company of the royals, especially since she didn’t have much to offer except her tarot cards.

And, she supposed, the knowledge that had been given to her by Lady Renata. But she wasn’t going to mention that. At least, she didn’t think she was supposed to mention that.

“W-Wow, that’s amazing! I’m sure you’ve learned so much from him!”

"Uh... Yeah. Sure. I guess you could say that.” Once again, Christopher's hand came up to rub the back of his head before dropping again. “Anyway.”

She blinked, unsure as to why he suddenly dropped the conversation. She bit her lip slightly, also unsure as how to continue.

Christopher was at just as much of a loss as she was, silent for a moment as he thought... and then, quite suddenly, everything came out in a rush. “Yeah, the Paladin has taught me a few things, but some of it I just don't care about. I know the Divines exist, sure, that's great, but that doesn't mean I worship them. There's only so much more of this religious mumbo jumbo I can take before I probably go drown myself in a river.”

She blinked again and laughed a little. It was certainly a new take on religion, that’s for sure.

“I have a feeling you wouldn’t enjoy the village I come from, then. They’re all very…superstitious and religious.”

“Ugh.” Christopher just looked up slightly, exasperated. “Kill me now.”

Etsuko immediately shook her head violently, not understanding that he was exaggerating.

“N-No, I-I can’t do that! W-We just met!”

Quickly, he brought both hands up, shaking his head quickly. “No, no, I'm not being serious- it's just an expression-!”

“O-Oh! I-I…ahaha, s-sorry, um…”

"It's okay, it's okay.” Christopher gave a sigh, shaking his head. ”Sorry to throw that at you suddenly.”

“N-No, it’s okay, I just misunderstood…”

"Okay, so we've established it's okay. Let's just... move on from it then.”

She nodded.

“Right. Um…er, were you headed anywhere in particular?”

"Er, no. Actually just.... avoiding the Paladin….”

“Oh! Er…any…particular reason why you’re avoiding him?”

"Same reasons I told you before.”

She laughed again and finally looked ahead, noticing a fork in the hallway.

“Well, I wish you all the best of luck in avoiding. I hope we see each other soon!”

He gave a slight nod, taking a few steps to the side as they approached the fork. “Sure thing. Talk to you later, Etsuko.”
Chikako vs Alice
Round 2

Chi groaned and rolled her eyes as she clutched her side. She had to admit, her opponent packed a pretty good punch. However, whether she was groaning out of pain from the hit or the pun was hard to tell. She straightened up, stretching her torso slightly as if to put any bones that were misplaced back where they were supposed to be.

Alice’s eyes widened a fraction as she watched the other woman’s bones shift back into place. She was going to say another snappy line but the bone user had beaten her to the punch; both literally and verbally. The bo staff in her hands was gripped a bit tighter as a more defensive stance was taken for the likely brutal onslaught.

“Enough with the puns.”

She withdrew her bone sword back into her arm, bending her head down slightly as she reached for her neck. Without so much as a grimace, she dug her hand into her neck and proceeded to pull something out. It was about as long as her, though as she continued to pull it out, it seemed to get longer and larger in size. By the time it had come out, she was hunched over slightly.

’Oh for the love of-’ Alice felt her skin crawl as she couldn’t help but watch the body change infront of her.

She had taken out her spine.

”Oh come the fuck on!” She exclaimed as all of her knowledge of the human anatomy went right out the window.

The edges of her vertebrae had sharpened into curve-like blades, ready to wrap and slice through whatever got caught in the middle. Her eyes, which had gone from their usual pink hue to a somewhat magenta color, were swirling with more reds than pinks.

“We’ll see who’s making jokes now.”

Oh she just couldn’t resist.

“You know...for someone so small it seems size really does matter.” The wicked grin that spread across her face showed the lack of regret.

It was hard to tell whether that was the the final straw or not. Chi practically growled and bared her teeth as she went lunging towards Alice, dragging the giant spine-whip behind her before sending it in Alice’s direction. She didn’t care which limb it attached to, just as long as she was able to get in a good beating.

A string of curses came out as Alice lept backwards. She’d been able to dodge the first swing of the spine whip with a well placed dive roll. However, on the second swing she’d been a fraction of a second too late and received a sizable gash across her right thigh. Alice’s leg buckled under her as she maintained weight upon her left side. What she wouldn’t give for her guns right about now.

The wound Alice sustained didn’t seem to be enough to fulfill Chi’s sudden bloodlust. She continued forward, moving her whip so that it would wrap around Alice. Somewhere in Chi’s mind, she remembered that she wasn’t allowed to kill and twisted the whip so the blades wouldn’t dig into Alice’s guts.

The bo staff would once again fall to the arena floor as Alice was caught in the wrap of the bone whip. She’d have to thank the girl later for not using those wicked blades on her...although the dozens of smaller cuts were just enough to make her open her mouth once more.

“You know,” She struggled to keep standing and keep a steady breathing rate at the tight wrap around her body, “I find it tibia little humerus that you’re such a bare bones fighter. I do have to say you definitely sockit to me in this fight.”

She wiggled in the hold for another moment.

“Do me a favor and loosen this up would ya?” Her smirk turned into a full blown grin.

“You’re tickling my ribs.”

With the whip in her hand, Chi actually tightened its grip on Alice. She tried not to do anything rash as she listened to her go on and on with the bone puns, but the last one took the cake. Without so much as a warning, Chi turned and sent a roundhouse kick to Alice’s pretty face.

“Shut. The. Fuck. Up.”

Alice's world easily went black and when she slumped over unconscious, Chi withdrew the whip from around her and set it into her back. She tilted her neck a few times and bent over backwards in an attempt to crack everything back into place. She glanced over at Alice's unconscious body and gave a slight smirk.

"For all your stupid puns, you put up a good fight."
On the Way to Somewhere Red

The invitation was rather sudden, however it was one that Etsuko figured they couldn't refuse. Upon separating from Cyril and his Sentinels, she and Calypso began to journey back to their home in the mountains. Because their small village was closer to the mountains, the air was a little crisper than the more desirable air around the Capitol. It was a humble village, with many a hard worker. By the time they had arrived, the villagers were beginning to shut their windows and lock their doors; the shepherds were rounding up their sheep and the children were getting one last game in before dinner. The journey took them two days, however the company was good and it was something they were both used to at this point.

When they arrived to the small cottage they shared, she was happy to see that a fire had already been started. Her family lived in the village as well, however after Etsuko’s affinity for divination became clear, she chose to live away from her family, worried that the other villagers would accuse them of dark magic.

The inside was large enough for the two young women. Upon entering, a fireplace was placed towards the left side of the room, guarded by a stone wall. Bookshelves and rather comfortable looking chairs accompanied the area. The center consisted mainly of a dining table and a kitchenette and further were two doors that led to their bedrooms.

They were there for at least an evening before an invitation from a certain Lady Renata appeared. Both young women had just been cleaning up after breakfast--Etsuko cleaning the dishes and Calypso putting them away in the high cupboards--when the fortune teller turned and found said invitation. She mumbled to herself, swearing that it hadn't been there before, however, once she saw who it was from, she knew right away that it was clearly from a very important person. The name was one that Etsuko had heard before, and figuring that it'd be better to be on this woman's good side rather than her not-so good side, she prepared for another trip.

Etsuko stayed quiet for the majority of the journey there. The changing surroundings seemed like something out of a story and something she might have spun in her imagination. But the fact that it was all real…made her nervous. She was glad to have Calypso by her side; having to navigate this on her own would have probably resulted in her turning back and trying to find her way back to her own village. Chances were, she would have gotten lost and perished.

Shaking her head, she gulped and tried to clear her mind. She had no idea why a demon, let alone Lady Renata herself, would ask for her presence. She doubted it had nothing to do with her fortune telling skills. There had to be something beyond that, a catch.

They had left early in the morning, with the rising sun in front of them as they entered the mountains. Very quickly the trail they followed became overgrown and disused; the superstitious villagers they lived with were comfortable with going any direction but east, and probably for good reason. Something about the mountain range became distinctly unwelcoming the further they went. The old trees seemed to crowd together, looming over them as their gnarled roots tried to trip the two up with every step. The subtle sounds made by animals began to fade away as they were left behind. Everything began to turn grey as life seemed to fade and a mist crept in. The silence was suffocating, even their steps muffled as they continued on.

The mist continued to thicken that it became almost impossible to see. The thick branches of the trees above did little to help, blotting out the sun entirely before long. Their journey was cold, dark, and uncomfortable. Though the forest seemed truly lifeless, the feeling that something was watching them made their hair stand on end. Despite this all, little about Calypso's smiling expression changed...

And then it was as if they suddenly broke through a wall. The mist and treeline cleared immediately, the feeling of being watched disappearing with it. The sun, however, did not return. Though their journey had been long, it couldn't have been any later than midday, and yet up in the sky hung an impossibly massive and very red moon. The night sky was dark, twinkling with stars of red and white. This beautiful sight was above a just as beautiful and massive mansion, made of deep red brick and wood. There were many wings and floors to the mansion that sprawled out in front of them, complete with tall tower-like structures. Dozens of windows were spread evenly over the various shapes of the structure, glowing ever softly with faint light from within.

All around the mansion was large expanses filled with gardens and paths. Just in front they could see several fountains spread out, with long stretches of bushes, trees, and flowerbeds spread symmetrically out. The flowers were all a deep red. These well-maintained areas were surrounded by a fence that apparently went around the entirety of the mansion, the trees suddenly stopping at least five yards from it in all directions, and where they exited was directly in front of the gate. As they approached, both doors of the ornate gate swung inward, and a path of dark stones led from the gate all the way to front of the mansion, where there were two large and heavy doors.

It took them over a minute to make the slow walk from the path from gate to the doors; such was the size of the space they had to cross. The double front doors of the mansion were set at the top of several covered steps, and as they reached these steps the doors swung inward on their own accord. There was a man waiting just beyond the doors. He stood straight with perfect posture, and though he was clearly in his sixties he was physically fit. His grey hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and over his left eye he wore a monocle. The man wore a dark black vest with a deep red shirt with long sleeves beneath it, and his pants were dark as well. He wore very black but very shiny shoes, and he also wore gloves as well.

This man was the first sign of true life they had seen in hours, and the man gave them a perfectly composed smile as he bowed before them.

“Ms. Tanaka and Ms. Calypso, you're right on time. Please, enter. I am Richard Leto, head butler to the Lady Renata, and it is a pleasure to meet you.”

After feeling lost for a good few hours, the fact that a goal was in sight put Etsuko at ease. The Diviner allowed herself to be taken aback by their beautifully red surroundings, probably the most color they had seen all day. As they reached the entrance of the mansion, with the doors opening just as they arrived on the final step and the butler introducing himself as Richard, she found herself relaxing. Perhaps it was because of the butler’s demeanor or the fact that they were finally out of the forest, but whatever it was, Etsuko began to breath easy.

She didn’t say anything, deciding to simply approach the butler who called himself Richard. There was something about him that was awfully familiar, however she couldn’t quite place it. Again, she continued to try and clear her mind of anything negative and told herself that at least she was here with Calypso.

Though it took a moment, her teal eyes came to focus on the butler in front of them. She managed to give a smile and a small curtsy.

“It's nice to meet you, Mr. Leto.”

The butler continued to smile at the both of them, giving the both of them a nod as Calypso brought up her hand to wave by wiggling her fingers. The man took one step back before turning, allowing them to enter the mansion fully. Within, the entrance way was dark, lit just enough for them to see. The high ceiling was far above, and there were stairways on either side that led immediately to the second floor and beyond. There were many doors that led deeper into the mansion, and many hallways as well. Paintings of scenes from everything from still life to scenic artwork hung on the deep red walls, and there was plenty of decorative furniture that vases of more flowers sat upon.

“This way, if you please.” Richard led them to one of the hallways to the right, at an easy pace. As they walked along through the hallways, to their left the walls were tastefully decorated in a similar manner to that of the entrance way, with closed doors every so often. Just like in the entrance way, there was just enough light provided by candles for them to see where they were going. To their left were windows, allowing them to see the gardens and grounds from a different angle.

The path through the mansion that Richard led them through had many turns. There were plenty of places where hallways converged and split away from one another, and windows came and went. The farther they went though, once again the unsettling feeling that something wasn't quite right set in, though it wasn't immediately apparent; they had seen the mansion from the outside, and yet through a combination of how often they turned and how often windows appeared and disappeared on their path, the path took them through a space that didn't quite fit in the confines of the mansion they had seen before. More often than not they turned several times in quick succession, in such a way that they would have followed a square around to the side they had initially started on, and yet the paintings and decorations were different...

From the night sky outside to the halls within the mansion, it was impossibility after impossibility.

Etsuko was beginning to feel dizzy with all of the twists and turns that the mansion seemed to be full of. She almost feared for a day when she would have to find herself alone in these hallways, trying to navigate her way back to the entrance. In a way to keep herself entertained, she tried to find landmarks, things to remember and mark the path, should she ever find herself alone. Unfortunately, all of the stimulus overwhelmed her brain and almost leaned on Calypso for some support. The fortune teller gave her kudos to Richard for being to navigate through these hallways with ease.

They eventually reached their destination as the hallway came to an end to a set of double doors. In front of these doors Richard stopped, turning to face them once again. His polite, reserved smile was on his face as he gave another bow of the head before he said, “Allow me to present the Lady of Demons, Karin Renata.”

With that he turned, opening the doors.
