Summer 1925
Bedford, Connecticut
Marshall College

It was a particularly dark night and shadows cast even greater demons when the moonlight entered through the windows of the empty College Office Building except it wasn't empty and Dr. Saunders, professor of Archaeology, had turned the lights off in his office after a long night of grading term papers, and quietly dozed off in his chair. After several hours of uninterrupted sleep, Saunders heard a noise which woke him from his slumber. Suddenly opening his eyes, he looked around the room to get his bearings and realized he'd dozed off in his office when he heard a second noise outside his office doors. He was not alone. Saunders stood up from his chair and walked to his office door, through the clouded window of the office door he could see shadows in movement. People were walking the halls at this hour, it must be students attempting to play a prank he thought to himself. I'll end this right now. He opened the door to see robed figures heading toward the exit.

"What in the good heaven's..." he gasped before a pair of arms grabbed him from behind there was a short struggle before he was surrounded by dark robed figures. They gagged him and bound him with rope and herded him in the direction the rest of the figures were headed. It was the faculty meeting room the lights were on and all the robed figures were wearing blue robes with hoods masking their identities. There were over a dozen of them all surrounding the table on the table was appeared to be an old Bible, an ancient book of prayers, an old map, a noose, and lit candles. Saunders was sat at the end of the table, and at the head was robed man with gold embroidery and a gold necklace. With both arms raised he spoke.

"Welcome Lyle Saunders to the Grand Lodge of the Order of Hallows, I am Grand Master of the Order and I invite you to join us," he said revealing his hood as well as his identity, the rest of the followers did the same. He motioned to the guards who released the gag.

"My God, what in heaven's name is this?"

"This is about power, authority, brotherhood, and secrecy... will you join us?"

"I'd die, before I join this madness," Saunders spat.

"So be it then," and with hand signal the two guards placed the gag back on Saunders, "you have comprised the brotherhood, and made yourself a threat to the Order. A pity you couldn't join us. I enjoyed having conversations with you. Good-bye old friend."

And with that a noose was placed around his neck as Saunders was dragged back to his office and thrown out the window.

August 1925
Bedford, Connecticut
Marshall College

It was Monday morning the 24th, and the beginning of the Fall semester at Marshall College. Indy wore his grey suit and his usual fedora and carried a suitcase in hand. He had arrived on campus as soon as he could after his boss at London University had told him he was being sent back to the states for a temporary assignment at Marshall College. Indy was certain it was punishment for being new to teaching, and now that his old boss was gone he had no one to vouch for him; but at least it was only a semester, and he was told he was to return to London immediately after to continue work at the University. Deirdre was continuing her studies in London, and she had not been herself lately after the loss of her mother, and so the recently blossomed relationship seemed to be dying as quickly as it had grown. It seemed to be for the best that he was away for a few months.

He took in deep breath of campus fresh air as he walked past a lovely garden while students passed by in all directions heading towards their places of study. Two gentlemen in suits seemed to be watching him as he approached. "Dr. Jones, I presume?" the larger man with a cane asked.

"Why yes," he replied.

"Welcome to Marshall College campus. This here is Dr. Adams Dean of Students, and I am Dr. Black chairman of the campus's history department and your new boss."

"Pleasure to meet you both," he said shaking both gentlemen's hands.

"Thank you for arriving so soon for the replacement this semester, we can't thank you enough for you to come out here and help with the students. Let us give you a campus tour and show you where you will be staying.

The two gave Indy the campus tour showing him all the places he needed to know for his stay, and by the end of the tour he was shown his new office, classroom, and faculty suite where he would be staying. He thanked the two before they left, and he began to unpack his suitcase on the bed. It wasn't much, just clothes, his journal, his teaching materials, and his field equipment which consisted of his bullwhip, his .455 Webley revolver, and his satchel. He began to organize and place his things in the drawers provided bedside.

He was thinking about rest when he looked at his watch, it was almost time for his first two-hour class at nine o'clock. He grabbed his briefcase full of teaching material and headed toward Stroud Hall where his classroom was located. Along the way he ran into Dr. Black who said he wanted to sit in on his first class. Great, that's all I need someone looking over my shoulder.

As Black guided Indy to classroom 113, Indy opened the door to see all of his students sitting at their desks. There must have been thirty to forty students. Suddenly Indy felt a bit uneasy as he put his briefcase down and placed his fedora at his desk and, but Dr. Black was the first to break the silence.

"Good morning, class. I want you all to welcome, Dr. Jones who will be your professor of Archaeology this semester. He is a visiting professor from London University and experienced archaeologist who has done exceptional fieldwork in Greece, Iraq, Egypt, and just returned from his work in Scotland," Black said as he spoke to the class, making eye contact with his daughter Shay.

A few students clapped for Indy as he approached the front and Dr. Black took a seat at the back.

"Thank you, I appreciate the welcome, Dr. Black and class. I'll begin Archaeology 101 - Discovering the Past with this quote from Lord George Gordon Byron, The best prophet of the future is the past."

He put his glasses on before breaking out the syllabus and going over the general outline of topics to be discussed over the semester. He was a bit intimidated while he read, but hoped it wouldn't show too much. It was dull, boring first day as usual, and Indy could already gauge the students by seeing who was paying attention and who wasn't as he went over the introduction. Some students were already sleeping. Indy noticed a few girls passing notes and smiling at him. They were very attractive, but he didn't allow himself to be distracted from the lecture. It was going to be a long two-hours.

Shay looked at her father. She then looked back at Indy and frowned slightly. She might be the daughter of someone in the group...it didn't mean she exactly liked it. She just went along with everything. She was too afraid to say anything and her father was actually all she had. She didn't have anyone else other than her father. Her mother died and she really didn't have any friends actually. She was a loner and a quiet person. She was a bit antisocial as well. But she was sort of a teachers pet or could be depending on the teacher and her father. Shay watched around as the kids were sleeping an passing notes. She could already tell some of the students liked him. It was normal though, she on the other hand, could seriously care less about liking any sort of guy, let alone a teacher!

Her silver eyes gazed up at him, "Did you ever go into the times in Egypt inside the pyramid? Some people make it off to be they have." She said suddenly, she wanted to at least start some sort of conversation instead of watching the kids drool over him. It was odd...that they would just drool over a man older than them. Shay could read body langauge as well, she could tell how intimidated he was, but she wouldn't bring it up, especially not with her father sitting there. She had her arms slightly crossed over her chest and she smiled politely. She didn't like making the wrong impression. Especially now with a new teacher. She hated making the wrong impressions as Shay liked to be perfect in everything she did and she at least tried to be perfect and thorough.

"Oh and, something I thought I'd mention....don't make a mistake trusting some people in here....they'll get you fired faster than some of the delinquents can and that's a fact." Shay said, trying to already keep him off the wrong path. She liked him and she didn't want a...mistake coming to her attention or her fathers. Just for his own good. "It's for your own good, trust me." Shay said, her voice getting a bit more serious as she rubbed her arm, glancing back to her father and she gave a slight shrug. She didn't want anymore deaths than what had to be. People would start getting weary if more deaths happened and she knew it...but she didn't want to bring the topic up of death. Especially not in front of a totally new teacher. That would just be bad for all of them.

Shay sat there, her hands now in her lap as she was fiddling away with her fingers nervously. She didn't want anything to be brought up about the death, but she knew with her father there that wouldn't happen. But with him there she was a bit uncomfortable about everything. Every little thing they had to do with the school. Her stomach turned over as she sat there. She had canceled a lot of voices of people, the people who annoyed her anhways. She blocked them out of her mind so she could focus on what the new teacher would say to her or to anyone else. She continued to fiddle with her hands and she looked at Indy. "Hopefully nothing including strange irrational events, but was there anything interesting worth talking about? Forgive all the questions, but I always wanted to go to Egypt." She smiled, she had a sweet soft smile despite the nervous turning inside. Despite how afraid she was, she wouldn't ever let anyone see. Not even her own father, but the friends she didn't have know she was quite afraid of him more than anyone else or any unexplainable events which happened a lot in her life...she just called them unexplainable events with an explanation. "I'm just really interested in knowing if you found anything interesting." She smiled.

"Shay!" Dr. Black hushed his daughter with a dirty look.

"No it's quite alright," he said as he answered her questions, "I've scaled the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt twice actually and I've done some fieldwork there two years ago. Over 4,000 years old. By King Cheops, it's one of the largest constructions ever made by man and one of the seven wonders of the world," he said remember all the visits he made to the ancient sites of Egypt.

"I actually have a piece with me from a dig I was able to attend as a child at Howard Carter's dig in 1908, and I was present when the archaeologist found and opened architect Kha's tomb in Egypt. I'll bring it to class on Wednesday." He looked at the clock as it was time to end his first class. Finally.

"That's all for today, I'll see you all on Wednesday," Indy finished as he began to collect his notes. Most the students cleared out as if a fire alarm was raised. Indy didn't think he was that bad.

Katherine had been watching Shay make her comments and before she got up she made her way over to her desk. "So it looks like we have a new teacher as well as pet," she said to Shay snidely walking away to her next class making sure to say good bye to Professor Jones before she left.

Dr. Black walked over to Shay, placed a cane on her desk, and shot her a stern look. "You will not embarrass me again, do you hear young lady," he said sharply before heading to Dr. Jones to have a word.

"Just remember Dr. Jones, stick to the syllabus," he said to Indy before walking out of the classroom.

Indy grabbed his fedora and decided it was time for stroll around campus.

Shay cringed a bit as her eyes turned from a happy, out-going look to a bit of a depressed look. Shay was a bit emotional since her mother wasn't around and she couldn't talk in her mom. She couldn't even talk to her dad, he would just snap at her like he always did. She always got picked on, she didn't like it. But she didn't do anything about it. She grabbed her book and her bag, watching everyone clear out. She looked at Indy and frowned. "I apologize....especially if you now think wrongly of my father...he's strict..." She sighed as she put her book in her bag. Her only friends weren't around anymore. They all went different ways and she didn't know why she chose to go here. She just thought things would be different. "I was just interested. Curiosity killed the cat I guess." Shay said as she walked out, her eyes down.

It had been a rough first period. She was happy next she had it basically off. She usually went to see her dad, talk about important matters. But at the moment she was too upset to do so. She hated being snapped at, she hated being called a teachers pet. But it wasn't like she could do anything, nor would she do anything. "Sucks having a parent working here." She mumbled as she put her bag over her shoulder and she walked outside. "It just sucks. I miss mom." Shay mumbled as she looked down at her hands as she walked, more liked trudged using baby steps. Shay sighed as she looked up at the sky as the sky was very nice and beautiful outside. She sighed, she felt like she needed a depressed day. Shay sat down on a bench that was outside and she sat there, just sat there....it's usually what she did on these days.

Indy looked at his student who had been one of the only students to express much interest in archaeology. She had dark hair and seemed like a really nice girl, she kind of reminded him of Deirdre about how she got excited about things; yet she she was depressed as if her mood were drowned in sorrow. He felt bad for her, probably having to do with the comments her father made. Indy knew how unpleasant fathers could tend to be, and how often had his own father turned his mood around.

"Look there's no need for an apology, I appreciate you being brave enough to speak your mind in class," Indy said before the girl walked away. He didn't even know her name.

Taking off his reading glasses and placing them in a case and back in his brief case, Indy donned his fedora and walked out out of his classroom. He strolled down the halls and exited the building to take another view of the campus. It was a beautiful day outside, and Indy enjoyed being outside as much as possible, something about being cooped up indoors just wasn't his thing. He walked around campus passing a very couples holding hands and other students having conversations. He remembered what it was like to be a student, it wasn't that long ago. He was incredibly lucky that young man like himself could even have his PhD and college professor so quickly. Indy loved teaching, but something about fieldwork you really couldn't replace with anything else.

Indy was walking along when he noticed his student, the daughter of Dr. Black, sitting by herself. On a good day such as this it almost seemed like an oxymoron to see her down on her luck on a bench alone. Indy walked over to the bench. "Hope you don't mind if I have a seat, but I couldn't help but notice you sitting here all by yourself on this gorgeous day. Your father, Dr. Black he is something, reminds me of my old man. You know you don't have to let him ruin your day. By the way, you can call me Indy outside the classroom," He said watching other students and professors walking by.

Shay had been watching the clouds, thinking about her mother and she just couldn't help it. She missed her mother desperately. She just always had to think about her. She usually would write, almost telling her mother what she was missing. "I don't have any friends, not here. My only friends are spread out all over the world. I'm just a teachers pet and no one likes me because of how I am and because of my father. Can't say I blame them." She sighed as she was fiddling with her thumbs again, a bit upset as she watched the clouds and she slightly smiled. Watching the clouds and laying in the grass made her feel calm and at home with her mother. That's how it always had been. Lay in the grass and relax. Remember the good old days she used to have with her mom before she died.

"My father sometimes I think..he never cared about me. It always felt that way...after my mother died. It felt like I wasn't important to him." Shay whispered softly as she sighed. "The girl that said bye to you hates me." She said as she finally looked at him. "She calls me a teachers pet. Last year I got bullied so bad I was put on antidepressants...." She sighed and smiled a bit as she looked at him. "Indy? That's cute. I'm shay....my friends back home called me Shadow...I don't go by that much now." Shay said with a smile, she liked talking to him. It was like...just by meeting someone new her entire personality could change. Especially bye wrong someone terribly nice. "I like your name. It's cute." She smiled at him as she fiddled with her thumbs softly...nervously.

"My father really wasn't one to ever talk to me or care...I basically always kept to myself. I had a nanny and she took care of me. It was awful." Shadow said with a sigh. It made her sad, but she smiled gently to herself. "I mean...no one ever truly liked me. Guess it was normal. I was different..." Shay smiled and stopped fiddling with her fingers as she was trying to cheer herself up. It was hard. But she tried her hardest to be like she was supposed to be. How she was raised to be. "Some times I thought I was a disappointment to him. But now I could care less because he was always mad. Everyone hated me, so now I don't care." She shrugged a bit and smiled at him. "It's nice to meet you though. You're a really nice guy. No one really ever walks up to me and would even sit with me. I'm a bit antisocial." She laughed a bit nervously.

"Don't let the other girls get to you, just be yourself and you'll prove who the better woman is," he said trying to think of some good advice to give.

"Indy is short for Indiana, I share the same name as my father so I had to be different some how, and I chose the name of my favorite dog growing up," he said reminded of his childhood best friend.

"Shadow. I like it, it suits you. And it's nice to meet you too, since I'm new here I don't have any friends, and you looked like you could use one. ," he smiled.

Shay smiled as as looked at him. "Indiana Jones. I like that. Has some sort of ring to it." She smiled at him. It really did have some sort of ring to it, she could hear it just when someone spoke it and it made her smile. "Yeah well they've been picking on me since I was a kid...usually they wouldn't when I had one of my friends around, but now...guess it's different." She shrugged a bit and and smiled at him. "Well then, guess you made your first friend and I did too." She smiled at him before she stretched her arms and sighed happily. She looked at her watch. She still had a little while to go before her next class started. She looked at at Indy and smiled. "Do you know your way around?" She asked. "Places to go and not to go? Especially at night." She sighed. "No one goes out at night."

"You know, I don't know my way around this place very well and I'm interested in checking out the night scene, maybe you could show me?" He said looking at his watch, it was time to prepare for his second class.

"Well I've got to go get ready for my next class, have a good day Shadow," he said as he sat up and walked down the pathway to Stroud Hall.

Through his office window Dr. Black could see everything from his own daughter sitting on the bench to the new Professor Jones taking a seat next to her. It infuriated him. Its time to keep an eye on Mr. Jones....

Shay was waiting outside for Indy. She had a bright smile and she was wearing her pajamas as class was over as well. She was happy class was over, she would usually, on days she was upset, she would walk around in her pajamas. It helped with her happiness and sadness. She was now amused as she waited for Indy. She had not talked to her father all day. Mostly because she knew it would hurt her. It really did always hurt her when her father upset her and she wouldn't speak to him till the next day or some time later. That's how things were actually. Especially for her. Shay sighed as she paced a little bit as she waited for Indy, she did say she would show him around and she wanted to keep him away from the night scene because she knew it wouldn't go well.

After a long first day, all his classes were finally over. Indy was still wearing his suit and fedora when he spotted Shadow walking about outside the Office building. She was wearing her pajamas and he smiled.

"Hey, Shadow! Well look at you, apparently I didn't get the memo," he laughed as he looked down at his dress suit.

"I'm ready to go on a night adventure, I've been looking forward to this," he said as he glanced over his shoulder to see a large man with a black hat make eye contact with him. The man was familiar, he'd seen him before somewhere on campus, and it almost seemed as if everywhere he went, the hat guy was there. He brushed it off and looked back at Shadow.

"So what do you have in mind?"

Shadow chuckled as she looked down at her pajamas. They were all black and she gave a gentle shrug. "Yeah...well it's late and after I get back I'm going to bed so might as well." She smiled at him and then she shook her head. "I'm just showing you around...the night time scene....you don't want to see. If you were me and had to deal with it for years you wouldn't either...it's not exciting it's just scary." She said with a sigh as she walked wit him. "I'm just showing you around that's all."

"Scary huh? You think this place is haunted? Well I don't believe in the hocus pocus ghost stories" He said to her as she went on about 'you don't want to see.' He was trying to make sense of the situation, but she was confusing him. "What have you been dealing with for ten years?" He tried getting out of her. "Because, now I want to know what you're talking about. You can show me."

Shay frowned as she looked at him, walking on as she became quite nervous now. Very nervous. "I can't show you....because my dad would kill me. Possibly you too." Shay said as she walked, she was very scared about showing him what she meant. She didn't want to show him. No one ever knew and she never told anyone in fear of being caught. Shay sighed. "You'll find out soon enough because everyone soon finds out." She said as she walked. "My father is just...strange..."

"Kill me? For what!?! Your dad hired me," Indy responded as he kept up with her. Things were starting to get weird and he didn't know what to believe. "Shadow, what are you talking about?" He said as she kept walking. "Shadow, look I want to help you."

Shay sighed. "why do you think you were hired? What happened to the teacher before you? Ask yourself that. Ask yourself what happened to him." She said as she stopped and looked at him. "I don't need help. I like you, I'm trying to keep you safe, Indy." Shay said with a small whimper as she looked upset. "please just understand and don't get into trouble..." Shay said with a sigh as she shook her head. "If I explained everything you wouldn't listen to me. You wouldn't believe me." Shay looked behind her, she knew they were being watched, she could feel it as her bones began to ache. "Just promise me you'll stay out of trouble...especially with my dad...I'm lucky I haven't been next. I know what goes on...guess kids are safe...I wouldn't know though. I don't know who is all apart of it...it makes me nervous. If I'm next, if someone I know is. So don't get into this alright?" She rubbed her throat. She was scared, if she was next. Or if he was, if he got caught.

"Don't...don't do anything stupid...they're watching us. Watching are every move. My dad will probably keep an eye on you, so don't do anything I wouldn't do...we have a few breaks coming up...don't stay here during that time. ANd if you aren't with me never come out at night and don't come out with any other professors..just take my word for it Indy." Shay said as she was a bit shaky now as she looked up at the stars and she sighed deeply. "I just wish I could stay out here...watch the stars...takes all those fears I have away for the night." She sighed and rubbed her arm. "My dad is keeping an eye on you....I don't know why...maybe because he's worried I'll spill everything I don't know... Just promise you won't get into trouble..."

What happened to the teacher before me. Suicide? Possible murder, but Dr. Black, seriously? Why would he do that, then want to kill me.... This situation went from awkward, weird, then to serious. Indy was not interested in getting to the bottom of things.

"Safe, you think he is after me?" That would explain why Black Hat was following him, and the feeling of being watched. Instincts he knew to act on from his days in the great war. That's when an idea sparked in his head.

"Alright Shadow, I have a plan. Listen to me if we are being watched then let's act like we are leaving for the night go back to your room and pretend to sleep, then sneak out and meet me in the library in two hours. Well figure out what's really going on here."

He stopped gave a convincing goodnight. "I'll see you in class tomorrow." He said walking to his room, it was time Indy found out what's been going on around here.

Shay was slightly shaking. "You're going to get me in serious trouble, Indy!" She yelled after him before sighing deeply and she went back to her dorm and got into bed. Her body was shaking the entire time as she was frightened at the moment. Frightened about getting caught by her father. In two hours she grabbed her sweater and put her shoes on and went to the library. She went inside and looked around as she waited for Indy. "I can't believe he's doing this I told him to stay out of trouble. I'm lucky if I don't end up like Mr. Saunders..." She mumbled. "No he's lucky if he doesn't." She looked around, just waiting.

Jones wore his boots khaki pants and white button up shirt and grabbed his brown leather jacket and fedora before he slipped out the back door of his room and hoped over the fence of the private backyard patio. He made sure no one was following him before he made his way over to the Burke J. Carter Library. As a precaution Indy had taken his satchel which contained his whip and revolver. Indiana Jones was a very cautious fellow and was under the impression he was going to need it.

Indy found Shay inside and lead her upstairs to the third floor somewhere private, and used his key to unlock the door leading to the Marshall College Art Gallery. It was a small museum with a collection that was the college's own, relying on exhibits and art donated by the school's alumni and professors. While the most impressive exhibit was made up of Native American artifacts, the museum hosted ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Mesopotamian pieces as well as art by minor Impressionist and Renaissance painters, and displayed some more recent work.

Jones had visited the museum in his spare time and took a look at the exhibits and artifacts, it was impressive for such a small an private museum and Jones dreamed of donating to the exhibits in the future. He had obtained a key to the place from the curator for taking his students on tours and study in the future. But right now, Jones took Shay here for privacy and to find out more about what was going on. The lights were off and he kept it that way so they wouldn't be spotted. He ushered Shay in and locked the door behind them he lead her near an exhibit away the window making sure they couldn't be seen. But before he said anything he looked into her eyes and saw the frightened look on her face. For a moment he forgot about all the questions he had for her and thought about how intriguing her silver eyes glinted in the moonlight. In that moment all Indy wanted to do was comfort her and protect her.

He thought he glimpsed something in her eye that had nothing to do with the murder or fear or tales about her father. Shay looked dazzling in the moonlight. Indy reached out and pushed back an unruly strand of her dark hair which had fallen across her cheek. Jones forgot about the museum and murder and shut out the rest of the world. There was no need for words, and he hoped consent was mutual. He bent forward; his lips brushed against hers.
