Hell yeah, Heathers is one of my favorite movies.

The Sharpe series is by Bernard Cornwell. It centers around the exploits of a British Rifleman during the Napoleonic Wars, a man named Richard Sharpe who rose up from the ranks to become an officer. Such was a very uncommon occurrence in the British army at the time! The books are very accurate historically as far as what was happening when, and the first ten books in the series are very easy reads. More fun (but less historically accurate) are the BBC mini-series based on the books. They stare Sean Bean AND HE DOESN'T DIE IN ANY OF THEM, although admittedly he does get the stuffing kicked and shot out of him several times.

My parents introduced me to the Sharpe's series back in the late 80s, just after filling my head with Horatio Hornblower novels. In my opinion, the books are good for stimulating the imagination while the television movies are... bubblegum for the brain. Fun to chew over, but not very filling in the long run.

Oh, and what would you like to know about Russian fairytales and folklore? I have an entire bookcase and a half dedicated to fairytales from around the world.

Oh I'm just waiting on some books from the library on the matter for a little project I am working on and poking around the net for stuff to tide me over until they arrive. I'm just trying to get a real sense of the flavor of Russian/Slavic fairy tales.

You realize, of course, that now you have me curious about said project?

What did you think of it? That's the new Gaiman, right? I bought it right when it first came out just because I compulsively buy books and just as compulsively never finish them. But I loved the first few pages...

Darling Dot, why am I not in the least surprised?

I liked it, it is his latest adult book and I rather enjoyed it. It wasn't as good as American Gods but it was still very enjoyable. Several characters shine, the grandmother in particular, and he has lots of fun with a new mythos. I found the end strangely sad though I don't suppose it was meant to be. Have you read the Grave yard book? That one was very fun. My reading time is limited but Gaimain's always a good bet. I have the first of the Sharpe books on order at the library!

I have read "The Graveyard Book" and a few others as well, including "Neverwhere" (I was half in love with the Marquis de Carabas by the end) - Neil Gaiman always tells a wonderful tale. If you eventually ever do finish those Gaiman titles you have tucked away there Dot? You won't regret it and, if graphic novels are more your style? Find "The Sandman" series. They come in two volumes now (three with some "peripheral tales"), and it's a fantastic series.

Another decision not regretted - I pay you enjoy that book Lil when it comes in! Again, all credit to RoadRash, for taking me by the shoulders and gently, but firmly, turning me about and pointing out this amazing author.

Idle, today I'm going to be leaving in just a couple hours to go see a movie this afternoon (the new Dracula - not expecting much so I can't be disappointed, but still good times spent with the family on our days off ;) ). I know you have a birthday party, but if you'd still like to leave me something when you have the chance, I can have pieces for you this evening and we can finish up soon, I pray. I would dearly love to make it to lunch! Abby still has to speak to Josie as well, and hey, she's kinda... Sorta... Ish... has a working lunch date!

The Sandman is how I came to love Gaiman. I still have the single editions lying around somewhere. So good. If you like graphic novels Igraine, do try the league of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore. So good, so much better than the movie. And anything Hellboy.... Now I'm itching for comics/graphic novels. Were is our expert on those? Sir, care to weigh in?

I don't know much about graphic novels myself. I cut my teeth on ElfQuest and Heavy Metal back in the 80s, followed by V for Vendetta and then the Sandman Comics. Before all that? It was nothing but comics like Sgt. Rock, The Unknown Soldier, and Weird War Tales.

If you like folklore AND graphic novels, however, I do heartily recommend Charles Vess' The Book of Ballads. It's some of the Child Ballads scripted by the likes of Neil Gaiman, Emma Bull, and Charles de Lint, and illustrated by Vess.

For regular reading, I still can not push Terri Windling's Borderlands/Bordertown anthologies enough. "Where elves meet rock and roll..."

Just requested it from the library! Looks wonderful.

You know, I have to say that this is another reason why I love this RP. It's not only full of people who are talented and imaginative writers, but who have great taste as well!
