The day was loud and full of colors as far as the eye dared look. People of all social standings partook in the festival celebrating the princess Liuva’s engagement to the prince of Hyolte. Today was to be her last day as a youth so naive and pure.

Standing behind a ribbon draped across a wide opening into the forest of Alneau stood the princess Liuva in a pure white gown with belled sleeves and an attractive cut from collar bone around her shoulder tops. Her hair had been braided up into an elegant and elaborate style then wrapped up respectfully in a cloth bound by a decorative gold circlet.

Trumpets barked into the air and grabbed all those within the area. It was time for their princess to cross into the forest for her solitude and last day of youth and purity. A soft breeze rushed into the entrance of the forest before the lips of her father spread into their speech. His words were loving, embracing the alliance that had been agreed upon long ago and would now conclude within the week. Liuva felt something unseen beckoning her to come sooner rather than wait for the motion of her father. Her curiosity had been peeked and nearly missed her father ushering her to walk forward with a ceremonial dagger in her hand to part the ribbon.

Breaking the ribbon and handing the dagger off Liuva broke into a shy trot with her dress hiked up. Soon she had fully disappeared from view. Her kingdom, parents and betrothed looking in wonder and their own curiosity. A few hours later he would go into the forest in search of her and bring out his bride to be successfully.

Slowing down her eager pace Liuva caught her breath and began looking around at the forest she had just entered. Never once had she been in a forest by herself! It was the only experience of total freedom and solace she would feel for the remainder of her life. “Soon this will fade away into a fantasy, as if it never happened.” The princess whispered to herself as she smiled and then hiked up her dress and began sprinting once again.

In her eager, youthful sprint she was not careful or aware of the feeling that had drawn her attention earlier. She felt the feeling spike and tingle within her once again. It urged her to run faster, quicker and more blind than before.

Her sprinting ceased when she felt her abdomen pieced by something sharp. It had run her clean through. Liuva froze in place as she felt what had run her through pull itself from within her lower left stomach. Collapsing to the ground with tears staining her pretty pale cheeks and causing her bright blue eyes to shimmer she looked ahead as a pure white unicorn walked from within its bushes. A bloody horn dripping from impaling her. The red quickly fell down its several feet long horn and began staining its snow white hide.

Sobbing she shook her head and began begging, whispering to the creature to please save her and begging forgiveness. “I . . I . . please . . I’m so sorry I . . . forgive me I . .”

Her babbling was soon silenced when she felt the stare of the unicorn calm her and its voice entered her head as if it were her own thoughts. “Calm princess. This was as it was meant to be. You are here for a reason. I am at the end of my lifespan and can no longer carry out my duty. It is time for me to pass on this gift to a vessel pure enough to contain it.”

“Wh...what?” Liuva choked as her pure white gown began turning a bright red from how much she was bleeding out. By then she had completely fallen to the ground and laid on the borderline of life and death.

“I am giving it to you to protect and someday use as it was intended. It is not safe for me to continue baring it. I will take your life. But in return give you an eternal one within the guardianship of a unicorns avatar. Once you have taken your new form you will have the instincts to keep this gift safe and that is all you will need.” With little else the unicorn walked forward and impaled the princess right at her heart. She let out one final gasp before her body seemed truly lifeless.

That was the end of her life as a youthful and pure young human woman. She had been reborn into the body of a unicorn and was destined to roam the lands protecting the essence that had been embedded within her being.

Some five hundred years later Liuva had wandered into a medium sized forest that had a small village near by. A small pond and a good grazing area had taken her attention as she came into its lovely presence.

Enjoying the clear waters she lapped up a good amount before she began grazing. Ears twitching to their left and right so that she could pick up any threats in her near vicinity. She had not received such peace in quite some time. Where she grazed was comforting and she hoped to be able to reside in the forest for some time before being discovered and forced to move on. Liuva had never spent more than a months time in a single location. Five hundred years and the world had changed so much. Five hundred years she had never held her humanity and only resided in her guardianship of the unicorn.

Liuva picked her head up and walked back over to the clear waters and looked down into its beautiful waters. Staring at herself she let out a snort and then closed her eyes. What had she even looked like five hundred years ago? This was all she had known for so long. Humanity was so alien to her now.
