Schunk

Crimson eyes widened as Ombretta’s fingertips grazed the iron blade that stuck out from her chest, her knees struck the ground with sickening thud as Eros pulled his sword from her back. He cackled as he watched her form hit the ground, the unbridled psychotic glee he felt burst forth as he watched her crawl upon her belly toward the cave entrance. The great fairy of shadows laid before him, struggled to escape him and the cruel death his sword promised her. He basked in the warmth of the fire that surrounded them, the flames he had ignited lapped at her skin and burned the tender white flesh. Oh, how she screamed in agony! Her cries of pure agony were like the sweetest symphony, igniting the dark passion within him even further.

With a strong yank from his weathered callused hands he listened to the second movement of the symphony, her voice ceasing as her vocal cords snapped. Within his grasp he held the delicate black wings that had once protruded proudly from her back, held them far away from the flames as he watched her form melt away into nothing more than a pile of bones and ash. The blue flames ceased to exist as they finished devouring their meal, Eros' hulking form stooped down to observe the handy work of his ability.

As his sapphire eyes study her skull, memories of their past sprang forth from within the depths of his mind. He could practically hear the soft whisper of the babbling moonlight brook he had found her bathing within, feel her soft fingertips graze his own before her fingers intertwined with his. He could still taste the apple upon her lips when he had taken her to the night market, hear her labored breathing as they shared a bed for the first time in a nearby inn. It was all to gain her trust, to finish the mission so many had failed to complete for his king. He had held her heart within his hand and he had taken pleasure crushing it within his palm before her very eyes.

“Ombretta! It is I, Estella!”

Eros beamed as he couldn’t believe his luck. Estella, the great fairy of the stars, was here? Oh the king would be elated beyond belief if he returned with not one set of wings but two! But luck did not favor the greedy, his fire barely having a chance to ignite before he was surrounded in a bubble of celestial light.

“Ombretta!”

Eros struggled and threw his weight against his cage, yelled in rage as his fire did nothing to help him escape her grasp. Why wasn’t his blue flame working? It was the hottest thing that burned within this realm! Why was he trapped within this measly sparkling bubble?
He glared as he watched Estella drop to her knees, growled as he watched her pick up Ombretta’s wings from where he had dropped them.

“You wretched bitc-”

“She loved you Eros! By the stars above, she loved you more than the shadows of the night! You miserable selfish human! What could have been worth her life? What could have been worth more than her unconditional love?”

Eros nearly doubled over in a fit of insane laughter, cackling whilst Estella glared at him with rage she had never felt before.

“The love of a fairy is worth nothing at all! You fairies believe yourselves to be beings above us human, yet one of your greatest beings fell for the oldest trick in the book! Her love was always worth nothing to me, and fortunately for me she was blinded by it,” He turned serious as he stood straight, “But I suggest you hand me back those wings now and release me. Else I’ll have to kill you as well, Estella.”

Estella stood from the ground and walked over to him, watched his forehead as beads of sweat dripped down his chiseled face. She smiled as she wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes.

"I think you forget Eros. While your fire is the strongest in this realm… mine is the strongest in the cosmos. I promise to send your regards to your precious king, but Ombretta's wings shall stay with me."

"No, no you-"

With a snap of her fingers Eros ceased to exist. Within the bubble of Celestial light was simply nothingness, Eros existed now as mere celestial dust particles. But with him gone Estella broke down, cradled Ombretta's wings in her arms as if they were the most precious thing in the world to her. To her, they truly were priceless.

"Why did you have to fall in love with a human? Ombretta… did you really believe the winged war over? You foolish, loveable girl… my dear sister Ombretta."
