Her brother was the one who protected her, shoving them back and carrying her out. When they got to the border, there was an armed squad waiting for them. Her brother fought against them while she ran, holding them back long enough for her to escape.

Background: Cassie had a pretty normal life back home. Her family barely scraped by in terms of money and food, but they were happy. Her two younger brothers were always play fighting and when Cassie intervened they would turn on her and they all had great fun. One day Cassie’s uncle was hammering on the door yelling his sister’s name (Cassie’s mother’s name) and three children were sent upstairs but they could hear occasional phrases as voices were raised between the three adults. The next morning Cassie had to say goodbye to her family as it had been decided it was no longer safe for her to stay at home. Growing up in a poor family, Ryan didn’t have much to begin with. He didn’t mind though. Ryan was content playing in the dirt and usually came home covered in mud. It seemed that he did not care that there seemed to be less food on the table with each passing day. But soon the situation became critical. Being the youngest sibling, he was kicked out in order to provide food for the two older siblings, who had jobs and need strength to provide for the family. He was put in an orphanage, and was found to be a “defect”, so he was sent to Nuxvar.

*Background: Even before all the fighting started, James's family was poor. They were one of the most affected families by the fighting, because they were already on the brink of poverty. Once the fighting started, his family was then forced into poverty. He's used to having nothing, so he doesn't care about actual possessions, and has the mindset that no matter what you have to do, survival should be your first priority. It makes him seem kind of self-centered, but he's really not. It's just the way he grew up.

*Personality: James is actually very quiet, and tends to keep to himself. The only other people he'll really talk to are other "defects" that he thinks he can trust. He doesn't trust "normal" people. He does have a bit of a temper though, and usually accidentally makes a small explosion when angered. Also, he tends to put the survival of him and others as his first priority. But a beacon of hope came in the form of a puppy who James in his self loathing state decided to take in and look after, after a few months the pair was inseparable and the aptly named "Hope" became his partner in crime. the two of them stole and fought to survive and James shared every meal with his four legged friend. When the call came to round up the defects James ran with Hope and made it past the border guard using their mastery of sneaking skills and Hope tearing one apart on their way through.

*Background: Nessie grew up with two elder brothers (not that much older, merely minutes apart). Her mother had had a difficult birth with them, and was never quite healthy again. She passed away when the three of them were two years old, birthing another child. The babe didn't survive. Their father tried his best to raise them, and Nessie had a sheltered life. Looking like her mother, her father protected her above all else, and her brothers adopted the typical protective brother role. When she had to leave, she found it frightening, ,having never been apart from her brothers before.

Background: Nacelle had been an only child, her parents had adored her and her strange beauty. Though when her colorful hair came in they had been scared for her and the day they had come to collect defects her father had packed her up and helped her run as her mother was slain in their house trying to protect her. Personality: Nacelle is a very focused girl, she doesn't speak much but when she does it is usually an argument of common sense. *Background: After running away from home, Alexander was practically raised by a stranger, a man who's views on the world were remarkably close to Z's. In order to survive he had to learn to defend himself and even to kill on occasion. This brutal life had it's desired effect, forcing him to master his abilities before his weakness could kill him. Some time after Alexander's 16th birthday, the man died, leaving him all alone. As he wandered from city to city, he saw acts of senseless violence, murders, oppression and sickness, but cared nothing of it. He had long ago been forced to close off his heart. After a few years of his travels though, he came across a man who offered him a change of perspective. Z, as he introduced himself, wanted to take care of people like him, the 'Defects' as they were called.
