Matt kicked the door open jauntily, tossing his cigarette on the carpet and crushing it under his heel. New arrivals to the Reformatory were always fun to mess with - thrust into a new environment, surrounded by people who'd done far worse than steal a couple chocolate bars. This was Mat's third year in the school, and by now he'd gained quite the reputation. Everybody knew that once his devil-may-care attitude slipped, it was high time to back off.
He looked around the lobby, and his eyes landed on the new students. He crossed the room to where the group was huddling together (except for a few stragglers that he could pick off later). Then he cleared his throat to make sure all eyes were on him.
"Welcome to Hell, population five hundred and seventy two. As far as you sorry lot are concerned, I'm the devil incarnate, and if I catch any of you saying otherwise... Well, no one will find the body." He said all of this with the darkest smile that'd ever been seen and a slight, half bow.

October looked at the guy, who she thought was obviously putting on an act, and frowned. She hated people like that, always trying to put on a show. Shrugging the incident off, October took out a notebook and a pencil and started to draw. October was an artist, sort of.

One of the biggest guys in the crowd stood up: a hulk of of a man, with a shaved head and a stupid face. He walked with a swagger until he was a few inches from Matt's face.
"The fuck you talking 'bout bitch?" He snarled.
Matt cracked his knuckles and looked up at the thug. "Wanna go matey?"
The new students began forming a circle around the two of them. All eyes seemed to be on them.

October put her notebook down. She hated fights, and she wanted to try to stop it. She knew it was stupid; both of the guys were much bigger than her.
"Don't fight, guys, really." October got in between the two guys, staring at them both alternately. "Be a little more mature than that."

"Get out of the way," the big man said. He took October's shoulder and pushed her aside. In that one moment, he let his guard down, and Matt lunged at him. The scene dissolved into a fierce fight, with Matt on top and pounding away on the bigger kid's face as hard as he could.
"Who're you calling a bitch, you little bitch? I'll break your fucking spine if you fuck me!"

October gave up and sat back down. There was no stopping them, apparently. She wanted to talk to Matt later, though. Obviously, he was an asshole, but October thought people were intriguing, and Matt certainly seemed like he would have a good story to tell.

Matt stood up and delivered one last kick to the boy's face, then dusted himself off.
"Stay out of my way and we'll have no problems."
He walked out through the crowd, which parted from him. Then he took a joint out of his pocket and lit up on the way to the doors.

October followed Matt, jogging up behind him. "Hey," she said, smiling slightly and tugging his sleeve. "Where are you going? We should talk."

"Fuck off." Matt shouldered the door and pushed it shut in October's face. He didn't have time for the fresh meat.

[Elizabeth]

October stepped back, momentarily stunned by the impact of the door in her face. After a moment's pause, she opened the door. "Come on, just talk to me. No harm will be done, eh?"
