Twenty - Three
On the outside Akemi comes off a peppy, confident and happy. She always has a smile on her face. She's not afraid to ask questions that need to be asked and is quite stubborn, often getting into some sticky situations. However on the inside Akemi is just a ball of nervousness and anxiety. She believes that she will never be able to achieve her dreams no matter how hard she works, how could a Japanese women hope to make it in an American world?
Akemi was born in Tokyo, Japan and lived there for a good portion of her childhood. Her father was a well known heart surgeon and took on a job for one of his American friends, this forced Akemi and her entire family to leave the busy city life behind and move to a tiny town in Minnesota. Being a foreigner who could barely speak English - Akemi had it rough. She was constantly bullied for her speech and ended up being a loner, it didn't take long for it to escalate to the point that Akemi couldn't even bare to go to school. Soon even her family became too busy for her and Akemi felt alone, she thought: "What's the point in living?" She thought suicide was a good idea, though standing on the ledge of the school building made her question her decision. Another factor was the boy who happened to call out to her, this boy would end up becoming Akemi's best friend and first love. They did everything together and he kept the bullies at bay - making school bearable. He helped her with her homework and gave her English lessons. However after a year her father was finished with his business and they were suddenly whisked away back to Japan. Years passed and Akemi found a love for singing, she was quite good at it and ended up catching the attention of an American women who happened to be visiting Japan at the time. Akemi studied under her for two years before it was time to try and make it big, but first Akemi wanted to tie up some loose ends. She told her manager that she wanted two months on her own to take some time - she moved back to that tiny Minnesota town. She wanted to see her best friend who she missed dearly.
