The cities are vast, and the streets are deadly. That is the harsh reality, where Finders keepers and losers die.
Many struggle to live through the day and whilst there is always a slight hope to get donations by the more fortunate ones, or even by the government, most just give into the poverty and the more criminal way of life. Some chose to, because it was the only way, but some were tempted into it. Into the deadly game that promised a price, better than just getting off the streets. Something that promised the contestants a wish. A wish that would be granted no matter what it was, A wish that could change the lifes of many, or just the winners. A small strand of hope which was constantly lit, and it was enough to rake contestants. But some, some just decided to join the game for fun, and for the adventure it would be guarranteeing them.

The game itself has only 2 rules.
1,Get the orb, A small golden ball with the symbol of a gear on it and a ticking mechanic sound, emitting slight heat on touch.
2, Get the orb to the goal, A pole with the same symbol on top of a hovering platform with a circular bowl at the top, in which to place the ball.
There are several catches to the game:
Everything is allowed within the game, and being a participant doesn't grant you immunity from the governmental rules or immunity to death.
The winner wins the powerful granting of his or her wish, and it's only the person who places the orb into the goalpost who gets the wish granted, even if several people made the placement possible.

The participants aren't identifyable, and just join whenever they feel like it, but a word of warning; You can't easily quit once you joined.

Ok, so this is the game roleplay idea thing. I think that our characters should have some previous knowledge of eachother, either through family, friends or relationships. A knowledge other than "Oh youre at the leaderboareds of the game"

Sure, I think having some sort of familiarity between our two characters would add some cool elements into the rp. I remember you mentioning doing something family-ish with a similar idea before so let's do something different this time. It would probably be easier if we knew each others character before we try to tie them together.

I'm thinking of using a man in his late 20s to early 30s. A poker player who lost a considerable amount of money because someone betting against him cheated. But, because the cheat couldn't be proven, and because this other person was in a position of power, Blair (my character) had to suffer the consequences. This person offered to introduce him to this game as a possible way out.

Question: The people who run the game, what is their motive? Entertainment value? Since this is a very underworld type thing, I would imagine they aren't sponsoring it like a corporation would finance an athlete. Their motive could be open-ended as far as our characters are concerned, but it will probably help me figure out some important details about my character.

I have several ideas for that. It's not set in stone, but I believe that the government should have set it up to make targets of people who engage in illegal activities, and to sort them out by who's more dangerous and prone to it. They also use it as a way to controll the population with fear, aka we protect you from the bad people thing.
Do you have any ideas? What do you think?

Also there is no set "These people rule the game" Its more of a word-to-word thing on the streets.

Ahh, I see. To me, then, it sounds more like the government uses it as a kind of death sentence for the participants. They know that no one is likely to win so they can throw in the people who would otherwise be dangerous to society as well as those that the government sees as a threat to itself. And of course the people in power would use this to their advantage all the time, like in the case of my poker player, who was a nuisance to the wrong person. As far as the general population goes, if this thing is just slightly more than a rumor, and everyone knows the level of danger, then I think absolutely the government could use that to their advantage. They could easily send out more rumors like propaganda almost using the right sources, especially with the right amount of control over the media. But for the populace to buy into it, it would need to have some proof that this game exists for everyone.

I definitely like that there isn't one person or even a few people running the thing. It seems like it might be too massive for a small group to handle at all.

The other thing I just start thinking about: how do the players know where the orb is and where to take it? Do they get any sort of clue or do they just have to do all the guesswork on their own?

They would go by guesswork and rumors. If you're used to the streets and know the city well, you'd know who had the orb, or were rumored to have the orb, and where the goal was. One would also know who to watch out for more than others. An inexperienced player or streetkid without the propper gear who enters the game would be an easy target for people who had participated for a long time and were/are streetsmart.

Right. So I think it would make sense if my character was new to the game. He might have some street smarts being a gambler, but is likely not to have many survival skills and is definitely broke from his recent losses. Whatever politician threw him into the game might have given him enough money to get something with which he can defend himself, but not a whole lot more. It is definitely possible that he is one of those "easy" targets.

If all the players knew this, I could see one or two more opportunistic hunters deciding to use Blair as bait. Instead of hunting Blair, they set traps for the hunters that seek him out instead. Perhaps your character falls victim to one of those traps but Blair inadvertently manages to save you?
