The world is old. Very, very old. Civilizations have risen, peaked, fallen, been forgotten, rediscovered, and then the civilization that discovered them in turn rising, peaking, falling, and being forgotten. There are no nations these days, just scattered villages and fortified city-states. There is more legend than actual knowledge of the world, most old records having been lost. Even accurate maps are hard to come by- the world is a dangerous place, and being a cartographer is a risky occupation.

Now, the races of the world are scattered, living under a shroud of sometimes willful ignorance of the world outside their little area. More systems of magic have been lost to the sands of time than currently survive, though who knows what ancient traditions lay buried in the depths of crumbling ruins from a bygone age? For those who seek it, there is treasure of all sorts to be found in the decrepit corpses of forgotten civilizations, be it wealth, knowledge, or power.

~~~~~
The rules for this RP are fairly simple- no godmodding, obey the TOS, have decent spelling and grammar, don't be that guy that does one-liner posts, and keep all drama IC. You are welcome to make your own species to play as, as long as it isn't a vampire, werecreature, or can't be described as "A humanoid version of _________" where blank is an animal (unless, like minotaurs, it's a deeply rooted part of mythology). Just run your species past me first so I can make sure that it's abilities are somewhat in line with the average power level, I'm happy to work with you to balance it while still retaining the flavour you were going for. We're also trying to keep to more Western themes just so that the RP doesn't feel entirely random, so please no oni or katanas or the like. There are plenty of good swords from other parts of the world.
~~~~~

I'm not aiming for the CS to be too complex, but you're free to add more information if you'd like- just make sure that all the points in the basic layout are present. If you feel like adding a link to theme music to help set the tone of the character, that's totally up to you.

~~~~~
As far as locations go, we're starting with the following player-provided map and expanding outwards from here- that doesn't mean that any area you want to use has to be adjacent to this or anything, just describe it in relation to where it stands to this area.
Eblistan – The Rise and Fall of an Empire
~~~~~

A note for the premise of this: the only items you'll have on you are your clothing and anything that doesn't look valuable. At the start, our characters have all been abducted and find themselves captured and stripped of their valuables- it's up to them to figure out what to do about their situation.

Character Name:
Granuaile
Species:
Centaur
Species description:
Large horse / human hybrids, averaging around 5-6 feet tall at the withers although larger or smaller isn't unheard of. They have a cultural inclination towards archery, though no unusual physical gifts for it. They tend to be fairly strong, and while quite fast they aren't as manoeuvrable as a biped, especially in more confined areas.
Gender:
Female
Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:
Granuaile is really very quite strong- it's pretty much what she relies on. Her unusually large frame on an already physically inclined race means that she is a lot stronger than most smaller creatures actually are capable of being. She lost her right eye in combat, resulting in her being a bit more skittish about people approaching from that side, and also causing her already fairly poor skills at ranged combat to drop to abysmal levels.
Background:
Granuaile was always a bit larger of frame than her fellows, but it was during the centaur equivalent of the teenage years where it became particularly pronounced. Always having been fairly hopeless at archery, she soon found that she was able to outwrestle most other foals her age- and those a few years older than her. By the time she was considered an adult, she was one of the strongest individuals in the herd, and although she still couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with an arrow, nobody mocked her about it anymore (at least, not to her face.)
She became somewhat arrogant and overconfident as a result of her raw physical power, and eventually chose to leave the herd to find mercenary work. She thrived at it, able to simply overpower most things that got in her way, and she would have in theory been able to save up a large amount of money- if it didn't mostly get spent on food and drink. Being the size she is, she has a voracious appetite, and the amount of alcohol required for her to get a buzz could cause major alcohol poisoning for some humans.

Her weapon of choice tends to be a hammer, preferably one big enough that even she has to put a little bit of effort into it to actually use the thing. When unarmed, she is quite capable of simply throwing her enemies around, or kicking them with a hoof the size of their head.
Appearance:
Granuaile is BIG, even for a centaur, standing about six and a half feet high at the withers, and a little bit under ten feet in total.

Changed my mind, went to Elven Warlock. Good?

Character Name: Kyrtaar

Species: Elven

Species description: Elves are a lithe race of Humanoids who stand between 5 and 6 feet, and generally weigh little more than 100 pounds. They are known for their affinity with nature, magic, and elusive fighting styles. To fight the elven tribes is to fight the wind, unlike fighting the static mountains that are the dwarves. Elves are also known for their long lives, and don’t reach maturity until 100 years.

Gender: Male

Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:

  • Eldritch blast: Kyrtaar can channel his eldritch energies into a powerful ranged projectile, roughly the size of a basketball.

  • Eldritch resistance: Kyrtaar can also channel his abilities to fortify his body, or speed up his reflexes.

  • Foreboding: Kyrtaar's connection to the stars give him a sort of sense for danger, allowing him to dodge attacks before they happen. It doesn't always work, and is less likely to happen indoors where he cannot see the open sky. This is due to the practice and belief that astrology and divination are connected in some way.

  • Elven training: Kyrtaar is trained in the use of two weapons that are iconic to Elves. The Longsword, and the Longbow, although he is no master in either.

  • Powered by the stars: Kyrtaar's powers will never go away, unless the pact is broken. However his powers are much easier to channel beneath the open sky, and even more beneath the night sky, and the later the moon is. If he were to remain indoors, or even more extreme, underground for long periods of time (multiple days, not a few hours), his Eldritch abilities will be weaker, and take more effort to manifest.

Background: Kyrtaar comes from an Elvan tribe that lives deep in the woods in the shadow of the Spine of Elbistan mountains, to the north of Fort Lusil. The tribe doesn’t have an official name, and is just a collection of families that help each other survive. However this life wasn’t enough for Kyrtaar, who longed for knowledge. Kyrtaar had no gifts for archery, or spells. He did not have the talent for Magic, nor did he spend his youth learning the bookish ways. What he had was will power, and a thirst for forbidden knowledge. He craved it every day, and so, he made a pact for powers he lacked. Not with the Fae, and the beings of the forest, or the devils down below.

Kyrtaar looked to the stars, pledging to them his soul, for power so he could attain knowledge. Although he got no reply in the form of words, he gained abilities he did not have prior. And dreams, endless nightmares about the infinite sky devouring his eternal soul. For this, his tribe cast him out. Not in words, or actions. But lack of them. Kyrtaar found no friends, no camaraderie in his tribe, and left. He swore off his last name, and set out to find his knowledge, with, or without help.

Appearance: Kyrtaar is a paragon of his race, standing at 6 feet tall, and weighing in at a hefty 130 pounds. His body is stocky for an elf, although he is still frail by any other standards. His stocky build by Elven standards gives him the constitution and resilience needed to handle the Eldritch energies. His hair is shoulder length and blond, and is always worn free. His eyes are a piercing green, and are oft to glow when channeling his eldritch powers. His skin is pale, as if the sun has never touched it. He wears a leather boots, with tan breeches, and a long sleeved green shirt, with a leather vest on for minor protection. He also wears a long green cloak, with a hood, that when clasped shut, can drape over his entire body. He wears his quiver of arrows on his waist, and longsword and bow on his back.
Dangling from his waist is also a book made of leather, bound in chains. He hasn’t tried to open it, nor does he think it’s possible to. It is his pact to the star beings above written in a dead language, and appeared to him after his first nightmare. When taken from him, or lost, it always reappears after sleeping, a reminder of the deal he made, and the bounty on his soul.

Edited for clarity, changed some abilities for more utility, and a little less strength.

Other than the fact that his possessions that I quoted aren't going to be on him when we start, seems interesting. Sounds like he's really less of a warlock and more like some sort of star-mage though. Don't go by D&D classes, just think of the archetype and how you would describe what you have in mind.

Fair enough! I edited the book to always come back, if thats alright. As for the warlock, it was something I always found interesting, I liked the Star pacts, and thats what I based it off of. I figured as the story went on, and he gains experience and practice, I might give him some of the other warlock abilities slowly. I just personally associate Magical power through practice with Wizards, Magical power through talent with Sorcerers, and Magical power through cheating and asking with Warlocks.

Character Name: Dori
Species: Fae/Fairy
Species description: Forest Fae stand taller than what most imagine. They often get confused for pixie, which stand no taller than a few inches. Growing between 4' - 5'6" feet, any taller is very rare and usually due to outer-species breeding. They usually specialize in nature, their magic reflecting this. They tend to have an abundance of curiosity though they, for the most part prefer to stay with their own kind. They find their breed to be very noble.
Gender: Female
Height: 5'2" (she's tall for her species)
Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:
Magic -
Plant Growth - she can make seeds and plants grow much more quickly than they would on their own.
Plant recognition/Identity - she can identify most kinds of plants and their affects on living entities.
Weather manipulation - very very rare capability, she's only done this once causing rain and it was due to an unnatural sadness. She's tried since and hasn't been able to replicate this phenomenon.
Weaponry -
The sword of Gryffon - Left to her after the death of her lover, she spent many moons practicing. This sword never leaves her side, unless forcibly taken from her and she will do just about anything to get it back.
Medium Bow - Made of white oak and etched with detail carvings along the finish. Strong and durable broken in for perfect use.
Short and medium arrows - Made of an assortment of woods each had their uses.
Background:
Dori doesn't remember too much of her childhood, only that she spent a good majority of her time wandering the forest getting comfortable amongst the trees. She learned to read the forest, respect it's secrets and protect it if ever she needed. She has never met another quite like herself, although she has realized just how bothersome pixies can be. They assured her that she was nothing short of a freak of nature, something that the world laughs at for being so much larger. For some time she let this get to her, thinking that there was something wrong with her and wishing that she were smaller like the pixies.
Over the years travelers would wander the woods and often times she would follow sticking to the trees. So many different creatures came through and usually meant no harm to the forest, only using it as a means for sustenance. It wasn't until a young elf came traveling through that she found her curiosity peaked unlike it ever had before. He looked so similar to her in build. All he lacked were the wings and he was quite a bit taller than her, still she found herself fascinated and for the first time wondered if perhaps she was really the freak of nature that the pixies had claimed. She followed the elf for quite some time, curious about his ways and his mannerisms until at last she introduced herself. Really, she lost her balance and fell out of the tree that she had been observing him from. He had been very kind to her, marveling at her wings. He agreed to teach her what he could about elves and in exchange she would teach him about nature.
Years continued to pass and the elf came to visit Dori every day, bringing her trinkets that she might find interesting or else sharing stories and they would explore bits of the forest that hadn't been seen just yet. After a time the two fell in love and vowed eternal lasting with each other. This wasn't to last, something dark and foreboding entered the forest, the trees warning the fairy and she rushed to save her home. The entity was massive and too much for Dori to handle, she would have fallen if it hadn't been for her love who rushed in to save her and sacrificed himself. The dark entity vanished and she was left with her anguish so dark were her days that the clouds darkened to match and rain poured.
After his death Dori took his sword with a vow to vanquish the dark entity. She has spent her life since then practicing and searching, but with no prevail. She's made few friends over the time, some of which attempt to help in her missions, some who ask her for help in their own missions. It was on one of these missions that she was captured and taken to where she's being held now, she doesn't do well with captivity and seems anxious about her sword being taken away.

Again, you're thinking with D&D classes, you gotta expand your horizons.

Besides, even by D&D terms, gaining magic via cheating and asking isn't best exemplified by warlocks- go look up Binders from the Tome of Magic. That is literally how their entire magic system works, and if I remember right one of the lines is something about how Binders generally work to keep a big secret- their magic is super easy. Draw lines on the ground, make a deal with the spirit, and boom! POWERS!

Well that would explain the length of the thing, I suppose. I was under the assumption that you, like everyone else in the RP, would be coming up with some manner of new character for this setting, rather than importing an existing one.

I am flattered that you have used my map, and my lore in your OOC. I will ensure I flesh it out more tomorrow (it's 1:30 am over here), and PM you it so that it brings us forwards to modern times. For all concerned however, basically know that Elblistan became great, but then floundered and slowly dwindled. At least, that's what I had planned.

Character Name: Mundhir Sadek

Species: Human

Gender: Male

Noteworthy Abilities / Limitations:

    - Prince of Eblistan: Mundhir is a Prince of Eblistan, and seventh in line to the throne. With such royalty assigned to his name, he commands a great deal of respect amongst the peoples of Eblistan. Such respect can arouse the most heroic of feats in the lowliest of peasants.

    - Expert Swordsman: Mundhir, like many of his countrymen, is more than adept in the use of the sabre. Being from the Royal House, his training has been lavished somewhat when compared to the average man. He is quick on his feet, and deadly in single combat.

    - Human: Though courageous and heroic in nature, Mundhir is limited by the attributes of his species. Fallible and flawed, he can but try to make his way in a world that is against him at every turn. Morals are cheap, and when the greater good is in question, he will not shy away from sacrificing the few for the prosperity of the many. He will also likely do things that enable the achievement of his goal easier, even at the loss of others.

Background: Mundhir is a Prince of Eblistan, and seventh in line to the throne. Growing up in prettied gardens of the royal residences, he was taught the finer arts of life, whether it was poetry, art, language, history or lovemaking.

However, this by no means makes Mundhir a weak man. Though only thirty years old, he has experienced the bloody nightmare of war several times. Usually serving at the head of his father’s World Breakers, he is an elite warrior of few equals, and is considered to be of a deadly tactical disposition. Given the chance to command an army, he would no doubt lead Elblistan to reclaim its former glory – if only his status In the bloodline would permit him

Growing increasingly impatient of serving a father who lacked vision, and brothers that lacked conviction, Mundhir started to look beyond the limitations of his station to serve his peoples.

Starting small, he gathered a few of his loyal soldiers to his cause, and waged an unsanctioned yet effective campaign against the repeated aggression of Eblistan’s neighbours. Outnumbered, he often relied on the use of guerrilla tactics to beat down his enemies; horse riding and archery became the mainstay of his military doctrine, in line with the Prophet Ebli Khan of old’s similar reasoning, and so was able to drive the enemy back from the ruins of Baalor.

The victory gave him fame, more soldiers and wealth; it also gained him envy. Though he would do well for Eblistan, his brothers, shocked by his resourcefulness and his popularity with the people, saw it fit to have him murdered.

One night, busy planning the logistics of his military endeavours as he often did, Mundhir was set upon by masked assassins. His sabre was nearby, and he was able to defend himself – but sustained a lethal dose of Ice Venom from the tainted blade of his attackers. He succumbed quickly, and the world darkened around him. The last thing he could remember, was the irritated curses of his killers.

Appearance:

EDIT: Thought I'd say, the 'lethal dose' wasn't lethal, obviously, or this would be an obituary. I was just making the point that he is supposed to be dead - and therefore can appear wherever he needs to be. Whether it's a dungeon or a ditch.

Name: Asella Valerius

Species: Human

Gender: Female

Abilities:
Asella specializes in healing and water based magic. Since she doesn’t use any tools, objects, or verbal spells to focus her powers, the extent of her abilities is limited. Water acts as a sort of medium for her healing ability. Using nutrient rich and magically activated water, Asella can expedite the body’s own healing processes. Unfortunately, she can’t create water, she can only manipulate preexisting sources. Additionally, she can’t change it’s state. Asella can’t remove liquid water from the vapor in the air, or melt blocks of ice. She can manipulate it’s shape but not in anyway that’s useful since her manipulation ability itself is somewhat crude. She can move water form one location to another, but she can’t shape a sword out of a block of ice. To add to her list of weaknesses, she can’t sustain any of her spells for long periods of time, and she usually uses her magic in short bursts of energy. Asella has no idea how to conserve and manage her energy so she ends up using it all at once, wasting inordinate amounts of energy. This sort of binge usage of energy and magic is what creates the need for her to sleep at least 12 hours a day and eat more than people would expect considering her size. Regenerative magic particularly is something she avoids. It’s more of a risk than it’s worth. Sure generating skin over a paper cut was simple, especially if it was her own body, but healing more serious injuries, like a broken bone or a severe burn, would cause damage to her own health. She might end up passing out for a few days and not be able to use magic for weeks after such an exertion. There has to be balance between how much she heals and how much it takes out of her.

Background:
Asella spent most of her life in a human village on the western outskirts of the Uchfos Forest, almost in the Eblistan Plains. Although this community was relatively safe, it promoted the development of certain survival skills since every family was on it’s own for food and resources. Asella would team up with her brother to go out hunting. She never did anything more than what is absolutely necessary, so she liked to stay in the background while her brother would do the dirty work. She would usually hide behind a tree and wait for him to finish the job unless she had to step in and give him assistance. Even then, she typically didn’t do anything beyond restoring his energy. This was the relatively symbiotic relationship she had with her brother. He did the work and she helped if necessary. Asella provided good company, if anything.

Appearance: Asella has short, light blonde hair and fair skin.  She's relatively short, standing at five feet tall exactly, but everyone promises she is still growing. Empty promises of course. Never participating in physical activity, Asella doesn’t have an athletic body type. All in all, she is quite petite.

I'm curious about age limitations too. What age is too young? I don't know if anybody has asked yet, so sorry if the question is redundant.

Right, I'm going to need the names of continents for me to develop Eblistan's lore a bit more without havig to keep leaving "[insert blah blah here]" every five words.

What I need:

- Name of a western continent, mostly barren desert and harsh mountainous terrain.

- Name of the continent Eblistan is on.

If you have no preference, I can go on to make up these names - I will do so anyway, so I can get started, but if anyone feels they need changing it wont take me five seconds to go back and edit what I have.

Western continent = The Olcras, or Olcra.

Eblistan's continent = Eulona

Alright, spent an hour writing all of this, so if you don't like it you better be nice about it. I haven't proof read it yet, so there might be some glaring grammatical errors. I will fix these later, after I've relaxed my aching brain.

Eblistan – The Rise and Fall of an Empire

EDIT: I can of course make concessions to the whereabouts of nations, or their names. I just literally had to invent a world lore by myself, and I felt if I had to keep stopping to ask questions it wouldn't ever get done. So if your character's origin stands in stark contrast with the lore, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. Be patient though, this was far from an easy stroll through the park and I'd like people to show respect, rather than go "RAHRARHAHRAHRAHR IF YOU READ MY CHARACTER SHEET YOU WILL CLEARY SEE BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH HOW DARE YOU BLAH BLAH BLAH"

SECOND EDIT: I can also make maps of places like Nillanor and Irongarde upon request. These are actually quite easy to make, so I don't mind doing it. Other places too I could make, if given descriptions to work from.

Talked with some of the others in the RP, and we'd like to ask that you use a different character- firstly, one that's not imported from prior RPs, and secondly, one that fits better into a more savage world. The way you described your characters background is quite peaceful aside from social troubles until something killed the elf guy, and this world is not that safe. If you were going with a more classic interpretation of faeries, ones where they were associated with malicious trickery and the like, that would be fine, but the kind you seem to be using just doesn't really fit. Too much "hot elf with wings" when in my eyes the fae look more... I guess I wanna say believable when they're a bit more outlandish than that. Otherworldly and all- kinda like how Brian Froud tends to draw them:

I actually quite like this! As usual when I saw that it was a magic user I got ready to watch for potential exploits of power, but you seem to have done a solid job with limitations so that all looks fine. As far as age goes, I'd ask that characters be adults, so preferably at least 18.

I probably should have been more clear, my apologies. I've played D&D for over a decade and enjoy talking about it, I probably could have paid more attention to seeming less like I was trying to shoot down your idea and made it clear that I was just discussing D&D stuff.

Have you read Tome of Magic? Super fun book. I like Shadow Magic even if it IS a bit underpowered, and pact magic is just super cool. If you haven't seen it, I can probably dig up a download for you if you're curious.
