That'll work. Lets say since they have legs they have a slight advantage over the minions since very few actually have legs. If they stayed in their caves then the only real threat would be from the Kraken and even then that's a big maybe 'cause its tentacles wouldn't be able to snake into cave systems without assistance, but they can't stay in their caves forever and so that's why they brought their chosen and leader to the meeting.

I'd say your all set and free to make a CS whenever your able, also scrounge up a leader to be present at the meeting. The leader doesn't have to be too in depth, just a name and some bare facts.

Alright, I really wanted the deep ones to be lovecraftian deep ones, but that wasn't to be. So, here's my race idea to fill that eldritch void; The Vodyanoi: Humanlike fish-frogs of the deepest depths, the vodyanoi are an ancient, sentient race of underwater dwellers. Those who venture away from their homes seem to be divided into two main classes: Priests, the cast blessed by the Lord Dagon and Warriors, the caste blessed by the Lady Hydra. Every vodyanoi serves and trains as one of those two honored castes for at least 25 years before they may choose to fulfill more mundane roles within a vodyanoi community.

Uuuuuuuuuummmmm...Are you a member of the Marsh family, Nug Soth?

And damn, with the Lovecraftian Deep Ones having the name Vodyanoi, I can't recommend the mythical vodyanois. Well, I guess I could, under the name Vodnik.

Here's my idea, two species: The Vodniks, an all-male freshwater species that greatly resemble humans with three big differences: green scales, gills, and huge masses of algae, kelp and other water plants as "hair". (Conveniently placed on the top of their heads and their jaws, so to disguise the plants as facial and head hair.) The Vodniks possess the ability to control water, varying at different degrees depending on the individual. They're a solitary species, with each having a small stretch of territory. It's very common for multiple Vodniks to "own" a stream or river, with each man sticking to his own stretch of land. Vodniks are very aggressive towards fishermen. While Vodniks themselves are herbivores, they like to protect the ecosystem of their land by guarding the fish from harm. Vodniks can come on land for a few hours at a time. They tend to scare humans, because their idea of a disguise is "whatever clothing fits", and this makes them look like dripping wet, smelly hobos. It's not uncommon for a Vodnik to enlope with a human, but it's rarer than their female counterpart, the Rusalkas.

The Rusalka are an all-female freshwater species that are almost identical to humans, minus their green hair. The Rusalka, unlike their male counterpart, love to hang out in groups, generally their family and whatever Vodniks or humans they're married to. Rusalka must stay near the water, as they do breathe it, but they lack gills, and are culturally accepting of long, risky trips to the human world. Rusalkas draw up images of sirens; wet females with unusual hair who love to sing and draw men to their watery doom. There's a legend that claims a Rusalka is powerless without her comb. This is fantasy, and many human men fall for that rumor, and try to steal their killer's comb, only to get laughed at, and then drown. Rusalkas are omnivores, like humans, and love to dine on fresh seafood.

The Vodniks and the Rusalkas are close species, and in both cultures, it's expected for two to meet and have children. The children will become a Vodnik or a Rusalka, depending on its sex. There are very, very few cases of hybrid species. A hybrid only comes out of a hermaphrodite child.

Also....I AM INTERESTED! I like merpeople. :D

@Wormgod

While I like your idea I'm going to have to put a damper on it unless you can make a unified government for your people.

Well....There isn't one. They're based entirely on the myths, with just a tiny bit of science an shit mixed in. They're more like a confederation, except with no central government. I suppose they could have a council, but nothing more than that. There's no modern government with them.

This will be your guide on your journey.
Name: Universally known as "The Whale Singer" but each species has their own names for him.

Age: Unknown

Species: N/A, a construct of the whales will.

Appearance:

History: The Whale Singer was created by the whales to communicate with the other races of the oceans. He is their Prophet, their messenger, and their son. Whenever he is needed, he is there.

Personality: Paternal, wise, and patient. His very presence carries an air of calm.

Abilities:
-The Whale Singer is the only being that can speak with the whales, it is an ability that he can teach but will not do so. The whales have forbid him from doing so.
-Being a jellyfish, the Whale Singer possess stingers along his tentacles. However what fills these stingers can change at the Whale Singer's will, usually a sedative or a toxin not even the strongest beings can resist.
-Finally the Whale Singer is faster than any jellyfish should be able to. He can keep up with even the fastest Carcharian.

Equipment:N/A

Other: N/A

Well then it looks like there is a counsel. The only reason I'm doing this is because we need a person(s) of authority to advocate each person. If someone were to just show up to the meeting and say "You guys should take me on this quest because I'm really good." That ain't really going to fly with the others. So yeah, if you can make up like a counsel or even a person of authority that would be great.

I wasn't really planning on have one of them in the roleplay, anyway. The quest is in the ocean, right? A freshwater species wouldn't live long in the ocean. Bull sharks last a while in the rivers, but they can't go on long quests. I just wanted some side characters and stuff.

So if someone was making a mer-jelly character, should they stop?

Ah, that clears things up then. Well now I look like a goof, anyway they can be in the RP or something. I'll have to work a way for them to be in but as I said I liked them.

I would advise against it unless you can make a good way for it to travel with the party quickly.

Pathfinder said I would advise against it unless you can make a good way for it to travel with the party quickly.

I was thinking she'd have to rely on others physically, such as having to hold onto someone else to travel fast or over large distance. Also, would a mer-jelly be a type of mermaid or a different race entirely? I know jellies aren't really fish.

Edit: And I just found a better picture than I could have hoped for.

Well....A sentient blob of bacteria? That's what jellyfish pretty much are: blobs of bacteria.

@Pathfinder: Nah, you're not a goof. I didn't explain my intentions with them in the beginning. :)

The only problem I see is the stinger tentacles. Those would be flopping around and sting the shit out of whoever you were hitching a ride from. Other than that they would a seperate race.

Merpeople are fish. Carcharians are sharks. Deep ones are octopuses.

Maybe a Carcharian could hold it. Some species--typically the more colorful ones--are not lethal to larger creatures. Some are even so weak that a human feels only irritation.

Oh, how exciting to see more interested people! Hello there!! :D

Just one question for you Pathfinder: do I need to create an authority figure too? Or just say that King Neptune is the authority figure for my character? Otherwise I can make up like a coral reef specific authority figure, a lord/duke/governor but nothing to rival a king in status.

Also if anyone is interested, I have contemplated other species that people could be such as seahorse mer, sea serpent/snake mer, turtle mer, manta ray mer, lobster mer. Lol just a few ideas :)

EDIT = IVIasterJay: I just thought of something, what if your character can choose when to and when not to sting/shock others? I also found this Jelly fish head/hair Which would mean that a tail fin can be there instead of the slow blobby thing.

@Absolute Grace

I would say make an authority figure for your town but don't go too much into it. Say that they brought you up as a suggestion and Neptune accepted you. Maybe later on in the RP we could visit Reef Crest and have that person be helpful and/or harmful.

Alright, no problem. And don't worry, I'll only provide the barest of details for the authority figure such a name, appearance and personality only.

It does seem like a good idea to stop by Reef Crest since they are really into history and stuff, which could be helpful :)

EDIT = Added the governor of Reef Crest with my CS.
