I don't think you need to change your magic, but you'd have to consider under what condition you'd even be TAUGHT how to use this sort of magic. Cause if magic is something that you learn how to do, it shouldn't exactly come to you easily at all. It's not like math, in which you can eventually figure out the basics by yourself, I'm assuming.
Perhaps the problem here is that I'm thinking that mages are 'wizards with spellbooks', while others are just thinking of mages as 'superhumans with special-snowflake abilities'.

It's the first story arc, yeah, but it's also the story arc in which everyone decides their teams...even though it's a random process.

It wouldn't, honestly. She doesn't mention her Nightmare Eater stuff at all in her history.
Then again, if you're a mage, why would you have such weird magics the first place? They standardized and categorized magic, before teaching kids magic in the form of spells, didn't they? Nightmare Eating shenanigans sounds more like the weird type of 'magic' that Gigalomania is.

There is a need for collabs though. There's a six post limit per person for this particular test. That means that, if you want substantial interaction to happen, or any sort of group fight, you'd need to collab in order to fit things together.
