It's just an anime/fantasy joke. Every "young" elf character I see in fiction ends up being hundreds of years old. :P
"Suppose I'll get to see it some other time," Hugo said with a smile. "So, which way is the special classroom?"

Hugo took a look up at the sky to check the time, and an idea popped into his head. He hadn't had anything to eat that day, since as a matter of policy, he stayed far away from airport food.

"...And, after that, perhaps we could grab something to eat at the cafeteria?"
Hugo nodded sagely.
"Ah, I see. I was thinking about asking for a more intentional demonstration, but maybe we shouldn't burn the courtyard lawn down."

You're breaking all my expectations for fantasy races here D:

But yeah, character ages would be good to list.
Hugo looked very impressed with Ember's statement.

"Three? I'm surprised. I mean, I know you've got the whole fwoosh" -- he gestured an explosion with his hands -- "thing and all, but that takes some serious talent. Are you able to do that sort of thing at will yet?"
"I... may have accidentally set my house on fire during an argument," he said sheepishly. Admitting mistakes was easy for him, but still embarrassing.

"Still haven't figured out how," he added.
Hugo turned to Cindy first, and gave a short bow, followed by a short, if flashy introduction.

"Hugo Schumacher, at your service," he stated simply. He considered introducing himself as a human, but a quick glance at Skylar reminded him that not everyone would be happy to hear that part. So, he made the next bit up - a half truth, but close enough to the mark. "A wizard."

He turned back to Ember, a somewhat more serious look on his face than before. "Well, hm. How to put it... I wouldn't have been sent here if there weren't, er... 'complications'... with my talents."
"Hm. Well, I'm sure you'll get it under control!", Hugo said cheerily. A few moments later, though, the smile disappeared, and he tapped his chin, deep in thought. "Though, given how things have gone in the past, I'll probably end up in that classroom too... Hm."
Hugo places the pipe back in his mouth and claps for a few seconds. He's still smirking.

"Impressive! Smoking hot performance! I was wondering when I'd get to see something like that."
Hugo quickly stepped forwards to relight his pipe on a spurt of Ember's flame, then scooted back to a safe distance, smirking. He took a long drag on the pipe, exhaling a large cloud of shimmering watermelon-flavored smoke. What even was in that pipe, anyway?

Aware once more of his surroundings, he checked for any sign of Skylar. Nope. Not there. Just the cat and this mask thing. Where'd she go, anyway? Hugo tapped his foot rhythmically as he scanned the area for her, slowly puffing away at the pipe.
