1993

The light shined brightly on the face of Yembe Songè, an elderly gentlemen in his early 50s. Tired and overworked from a long night of preparation and planning alongside several younger, far more eager gentlemen. It had felt as though time itself had stood still, a brief escape from the stress of presidential planning, only to be quickly taken away from the sound of another entering the room. He turned to see an all to familiar face, a man by the name of Dominic Malembe.

“Mr. Songè, preparations have been made for a fundraising event scheduled this afternoon. The party suggests that it is there that you should announce your candidacy for the presidency, it’ll likely draw attention from our support base.” Dominic callously announced. “Your ride will pick you up at three in the afternoon, a suit sent to you an hour before that. It’s suggested that you rest in the meantime.”

Yembe, suppressing his frustration, replied “Was it not in the interest of the party to inform me sooner? The fundraiser was supposed to happen later this week.” Though he received no response from Dominic. “Damned the party, I wasn’t expecting to be worked to death when I took up this position. I’ve survived two wars only to die exhausted and overburdened by my own party.” Though that was a slight exaggeration. Yembe never actively fought in either war, the first was the war for independence against France in 1962. Having only served as an active protester during their occupation, having nearly been killed during the Saturday Massacre in Kamidye. The second war, being the civil war. To which he, alongside several other Liberal Democrats, had been imprisoned by the Samgolan People’s Front. Later freed three years later during the liberation of Boagoa. “Is that all Dominic?”

“Indeed Mr. Songè. Get some rest, today is only the first of many exhausting days.” Dominic then quietly made his leave.

Several hours had passed, and after a long nap Yembe had felt reinvigorated. Despite the suddenness of his announcement for presidency, the party was quick to deliver him a small announcement speech. Simple and to the point, paying only lip service to the ideals that the party has long held to be favorable in order to approach policy cautiously and tactically.

Once he had arrived to the gathering he was joined by several other trusted members of the Liberal Democrats, Jordan Kenge, Nji Bassong, and Michel Eyango. “Yembe ol’ friend. A pleasure to see that you’ve arrived on time. I hope the sudden notice didn’t leave you to nervous?”

“Not at all Michel, it seems as though our speechwriters were able to quickly write something up. It’s rather simple, but I’m sure the announcement will be enough for this week.” The group of men alongside Yembe then began to drink and dine. The fundraiser seemed to have attracted a small, yet wealthy gathering. Donations slowly pouring in from the Liberal Democrats wealthier supporters. After a short few moments, Jordan began to stand upon the stage setup.

“I’m so grateful that our campaign donors have decided to come out today and show their support for our party.” Energetic clapping and cheering could be heard throughout the tables. “It is here that we would like to announce the presidential candidacy of Yembe Songè.”

By the time that Yembe had arrived on stage himself, the cheering had only gotten louder, until eventually he was given a moment of silence to speak. “Indeed, I am happy to announce that for the first time I will be running for presidency. Our party has stood the test of time. Established after our independence, it harrowed a great many challenges. Each challenge however, has only furthered the will of this party, its’ fortitude, strength, and cunning. With each loss, came a victory. A victory for the greater good of Samgola. I’ll seek to defend these parties values with my life, for I’m not afraid to stare down death. The tragedy of war has long torn apart Samgola, today we will bring it back together once again.”

Name of Nation: The Free State of Pohae

Government:
At the federal level the Free State of Pohae is a democratic republic. The free state is divided into twelve regions, eleven “Bulankhets” which act as semi-autonomous tribal territories and the free city of Pohae. These twelve regions, often times through direct democracy, elect ten representatives to serve upon the Federal Council every six years. The Federal Council then acts as the representative body of the government, passing and enforcing laws, establishing and maintaining the judiciary, electing when to go to war, and maintaining the nations budget. Any citizen within the Free State of Pohae is capable of disputing these decisions and can call for a direct vote from the people to overturn it.

At a local level these twelve regions function semi-autonomously, whose local governments are determined independently of the federal government. For example, many of the Bulankhets are under the authority of a powerful tribe whose local governments often consists of either elected elders or hereditary warlords. Other territories, such as the free city of Pohae, elect representatives through direct democracy. These regions are capable of passing and maintaining their own laws independent of the federal government, trade internally amongst themselves, and tax citizens to fund public projects.

Species: The predominant species within the republic is humans alongside a notable population of Orcs, Goblins, and Demi-Humans from neighboring nations. Found mostly outside of major cities exists small colonies of Satyrs and Centaurs whom are native to the territory.

Culture:

History:

Territory Claims:

Economy:
The Free State of Pohae’s economy centers around the city itself. Due to its road connections to the Sesong Dynasty and the Eastern Empires, as well as a powerful navy to ensure dominance in trade, it is a desirable location for merchants across the world to meet and sell goods. Domestically the city predominantly trades in furs, spices, and technology. The furs and spices often being acquired from the neighboring Bulankhets.

Technology:
The Free State of Pohae has remained relatively modern, due to its place as an essential trading hub for nations. There are a few tribes who struggle to access basic utilities such as electricity due to a lack of infrastructure, but both the capital and larger surrounding tribes live fairly modern lives.

Army:
The Free State’s military is divided between the Federal Army and the Bulankhet militias. At the Federal level, the Army consists of mostly human males between the ages of 20-24 from the city of Pohae and its surrounding territory. It is Estimated that the standing army is around 80,000 strong, though it has special permissions to draw from local militias and the general population during wartime.

The Bulankhet militias are controversial at the Federal level. They are often ill equipped and poorly trained in comparison to the Federal Army, serving little tactical advantage on the battlefield. Maintained simply to protect the autonomy of the Bulankhets, rather then for the benefit of the Free State. There is no estimated size of the Bulankhet militia’s numbers, though it is agreed upon that it is likely far smaller than the Federal Army.

Navy:
Due to Pohae’s heavy reliance on trade, the Federal Navy is by far it’s strongest military asset. The nation has opted to rely upon a massive fleet as a deterrent against foreign expansion, effectively making forms of naval expansion nearly impossible and forcing enemies to cross the massive and empty steppes of Pohae to reach its capital.

Air Force:
The Steppes of Pohae have made for an effective testing ground in recent aerial technology. Maintaining a small air force of nearly two hundred biplanes to potentially scout approaching enemies.

Full Name: William Hodge
Date of Birth: November 8th, 1753
Nation Affiliation: Merenia
Position: Member of Parliament (Liberal Party)
Bio: William was born into a small yet wealthy landed family, third son of Robert Hodge and his wife Anne. With little chance to inherit the family estate, he pursued a career in the navy and joined the naval academy when he was 16. At age 23, he was given the rank of Captain and command over the Chivalrous, a large frigate. Three years later he obtained renown after the battle of Green Bay against a small fleet of pirates, where he successfully sunk two frigates and captured a third, earning him the rank of Commodore. Most of William’s military career after that was relatively eventless, he earned the rank of Rear Admiral by the time he was 30 and retired a year later. Shortly after retirement he pursued an education at the Pennington University in Merenia’s capital, where he spent six years studying both law and philosophy. During this time he became a strong advocate of liberalism and began to take active interest in Merenian politics. Once he had finished his education, he became a member of the Merenian liberal party, and earned his first seat in Parliament three years later. Since then, he has become an influential member within the party, due to a combination of his passionate belief, staunch anti-Taranian attitude, and military career.

You know what, I'll put my hat in the ring. Voting for option 2.
