Some see her as a 'mother bear' type, and it is easy to see why. She enjoys being active and productive, it is rare to find Balas simply 'doing nothing' when she can be doing something useful or giving aid to another. She has a hands-on nature that make her seems to have a bit of an 'warrior of old' kind of persona. Often laughing and smiling, even in the heat of battle, and does not shy from combat. But when the going gets rough and the danger truly significant, Balas's energetic smile will fade away and she will demonstrate a very focused, deadly serious nature, revealing a much more no-nonsense side of her more similar to a battle commander. She does not tolerate serious threats to her allies lightly and will be the last willing to leave a fight to ensure other have a full chance to retreat.
Bio:
Balas Ruby is a very old 'foot soldier' gem, even by many gem standards. So much so that those of the same type as her are no longer called balas rose but 'Rose Spinel'. Long and faithfully she had been a warrior of the home world, for countless millennia she lived on the Gem's front lines until the stood as a dominate and rarely challenged force in their part of the universe. From there she had been reassigned to security detail on Kindergarten projects. She didn't only think that working as a guard was a waste of her abilities but she didn't like the results of the Kindergarten program. She always had half a mind to do something about it but she was but a single warrior, not a leader or strategist, and didn't believe she was able to convince others to follower her lead. But lucky for her, someone else came along. Rose Quarts.
She gladly joined the crystal gems in defense of this planet, and fought fiercely on their behalf of the crystal gems until, and she can't quite remember how, she was corrupted and became a horrible worm monster, as adult steven explained to her after she had been restored. She was pleased to once more give her skills in service to the earth and the crystal gems.

A bearded ax. Normally appearing as a massive, pinkish-red, two-handed bearded Axe. The pole nearly longer as she is. The full length of the blade of her ax head is foot and a half. She can shrink it down to a smaller, single handed bearded ax when speed is more important than power.

Sonic wave generation: Balas demonstrates the ability to produce powerful sonic waves. Allowing her to release powerful short range bursts of sonic energy from her hands or ax, or much more powerful, larger bursts from her mouth as a roar like blast.

She really enjoys shiny things, especially red shiny things, and her personal space is often filled with various trinkets of the sort
