@Asta: If you do not mind...

I generally support the notion of a GM having absolute power/my word is law for a couple reasons.

#1: It exposes good GM's who communicate from bad ones who punish near instantly in most circumstances.
#2: It gives me the power to deal with problems or enforce systems as necessary. (For instance, a strong theme in my role plays is that anyone can die. There is little to no plot armour. It would be excruciatingly hard to enforce this without absolute power.)
#3: A GM has absolute power... But only in their thread. If a GM turns out to be garbage, you can simply leave and join a new Rp. You can also make your own and become the dictator yourself, if you want.

Basically: I enforce in my own Rp's and support GM word is law because the GM's role is, by definition, the arbiter. They make the world and plot, and it simply helps to have a central authority figure. Especially if a moderator has to be called in for help, and especially since if a GM is bad, you can just... Leave. Go find a better GM, or become a better GM.
Hi, I mentioned a while ago that one of the things I planned on doing was recreating a few straightforward "welcome to role playing" guides, that old guild used to have, such as explaining what PbPRP is. I think I have it down to just three now: What is forum role playing, what to do as a player, and what to do as a GM/DM.

However, before I proceed, I'd like to know what you all think should be in the guides. What should be emphasized, and so on.

First one I'm going to write will be the PbPRP one, as it introduces what exactly forum role playing is, and should be the shortest. Next will be the player guide, then the GM guide. The player guide is going to focus on roleplay etiquette, the action-reaction wheel and the role of exposition, and how characters work. The GM guide is going to focus on the basics of a plot (who, what, when, where, how, and why), GM/DM etiquette (with a focus on communication and compromise as the number one tools to stop problems), and the basics of world building.

So what do you all think?

I think after all this time that the most interesting thing to come out my brainstorming sessions is Selkie/Skinwalker hybrids. They're two mythological races from different cultural backgrounds that actually have quite a bit in common (although the former is usually more benevolent then the later), but I'm not sure I've seen anyone else cross them.


Herzinth, a player in LoR 2, made a Selkie that comes from a sea made out of literal blood, that was then enslaved, and prostituted, then escaped.

So, well, there. You aren't alone in creatively playing with Selkies.
Real life and classic mythology. Some dungeons and dragons, pathfinder, and rolemaster. Sometimes just straight up brainstorming. It's led to lesbian queens, drow vampires, orc knights, shapeshifters that base their life around judeo-christian mythos... Loads of goodies.
Kouri shakes her head and sighs, still cradling herself against Alex. "You are no monster to me." She says softly, moving to kiss Alex again, and then hesitating and stopping. "The Gods themselves wish me dead, why should I be worried about a werewolf who can control herself.." She looks down. "Though.. I understand if.."

Alex chuckles for a moment, “You have a good point.” Seeing Kouri back away from kissing her, she cups Kouri’s chin to lift her gaze. “I’m falling for you and would be feverish in the head not to wish to be yours,” she beams merrily.

Kouri smiles a little, and then whispers softly. "Then, for just a few moments, could we forget that I am a princess, and you are a pirate? Just for a little while?" She leans in nervously once again, closing her eyes as she does.

“Certainly,” with that, Alex holds Kouri against herself, burying her face against her neck. She sighs contentedly, closing her eyes as well and letting her cares slip away. They had time, for now. The world could wait.
Two years that entire romantic subplot developed and culminated in a simple kiss and declaration of love and care. And I will never forget how magnificent it was.
Being a GM I have to play all types, and found a way to enjoy each and every archetype there is.

As a player? Usually tacticians, or the overly curious, or those who struggle to understand humanity. Often with romantic potentials in that.

On-Topic: When someone confuses quantity for quality. No I don't care that you needed to spend three paragraphs to describe how a brush moved in the wind as you gently caressed your dead lover's locket: Unless that brush is coming up again in the future, it's merely an unfired Chekhov's Gun, and you are wasting the time of everyone reading it.

Detail has its place in fiction and is dependent on the scene, which is in turn dictated by the author. Isaac Asimov is as wordy as he is because he has to describe fantastical inventions that nobody could really grasp with a one liner description. He used his descriptions to suck you into worlds typically full of vacuum tubes and magnetic technologies. On the other hand, take world of warcraft role playing: The entire world is painted out in great detail for you. Having massive expository dialogue would be a waste of time there, the only thing you should be focusing on are subtle actions and dialogue. Same goes for movies: The rule is show, don't tell.

There comes a time for detail and exposition. Think of it like... Food, and your story is your child. If you stuff your child nonstop with food, especially sugary purple prose, your child will inflate until they have coronary heart failure and need to be moved with a bulldozer into their grave. At the same time, if you don't feed them enough, they become anorexic, without detail or substance or flavour, and they die.

tl;dr: Posts are children. Feed them a good diet please, it's hard enough to take care of our own children, leave alone when your 300 pound scooter riding fuck gets stuck in the door so nobody can get past it.
We're the result of genetic engineering by Aliens to create a theme park/reality TV show involving what would happen if there was a species that had the capacity to learn from its mistakes... And often didn't feel inclined to do so.
