Emily swore under her breath as she fell into the infinite abyss. Apparently, she should have taken the chance to eat lunch when she had it.

Maybe more to the point, this was weird. She'd been on very solid ground moments ago, and now she was here. "Here" in this case just meaning wherever she was, as there was no way to figure out any kind of direction or orientation. She couldn't even be certain she was falling, though she was definitely moving. Just not necessarily downwards, if downwards existed here.

In any case, the falling and the blackness didn't last long, though the weirdness stubbornly persisted. The weirdness this time being very unpleasant heat and lots of dead people. Some of whom were on top of Emily. There was other people's blood dripping onto her, as well. That was disgusting.

Having worked her way out the pile of corpses, Emily proceded to approach Victoria, saying "Not a clue. Honestly, I think we were just lucky, though that might be the wrong word for it."
The short version was "it worked".

The long version was that now someone had been stabbed, no doubt there were plenty of minor injuries going around as well, and Emily didn't want to know what was happening to Junks right now. It sounded painful.

Perhaps it was fair, then, for Emily to prefer the short version.

In any case, none of that was really her problem. What was her problem? Her knuckles hurt and she couldn't find the girl who had her lunch. What was her solution? Get annoyed and get even more annoyed.

On the other hand, the aforementioned someone was lying under a table with a knife in his stomach. Did he need help? Probably not. Security would be here soon, and then he'd be patched up. Besides, there were dozens of people here. If it was that bad, one of them could help him. Emily had more important things on her mind.

"Jarod! Jarod!" Emily called out for the smaller girl, but her voice was lost among the riot. "Damn it, Jarod, you have my food!"
Emily turned to Jarod, the girl from before, and began to speak, trying to make it appear as though she was oblivious to what was happening closeby.

"Yes, something is up, and yes, I'm alright, though for how much longer I can't be sure." Emily's voice was tense, with good reason. "Don't make it obvious, just take a look at Junks. His hand. See that? Now take a guess at his financial situation, and consider that Victoria is wearing a presumably very valuable diamond ring. What do you think, then, that Junks is holding? We're not safe here, Victoria especially."

What could she do? Running seemed the safest option, but the idea hurt her pride. Equally, though, she could hardly take on someone with a knife alone. And warning the rest of the room would be almost impossible to do quietly. On the other hand... that could work.

"Hold this," she said, passing Jarod her lunch.

Emily started humming a P!nk song as she moved towards Victoria and Junks. Some jerk from the sports crowd was headed to a seat close to the pair. When she was just a few feet from all three, she sung under her breath "Na na na na, na na na, I'm gonna start a fight", then punched the jock square in the face. She wasn't an experienced fighter, but he'd been so taken by surprise that he stumbled and fell over, crashing into Junks and Victoria on the way down.

Then, the room exploded with action.
Emily had finally got to the front of the queue when she spotted Junks and Victoria. As she took her food, she couldn't help noticing that, based on the way they'd spoken to each other before, they clearly weren't close. Well, except physically, and that was the strange part. Not that a couple would act that way in a place so public anyway, whether or not they felt that way, but that wasn't the point.

The point was that it was strange, and if it was strange, something was bound to happen.

Emily was approaching the pair, her meal in one hand, when she saw the way Junks held himself. When she saw the sliver of metal gripped in his hand. She couldn't hear what was being said, but she could remember that ring, and the way the boy had looked at it.

Oh shit.
Name:
The Glorious Providence of Arlan

Flag:

Type of government:
Theocracy

Government description:
The Providence is headed by a Grand Theurge, a simultaneously religious and political leader. Each Grand Theurge rules until death or abdication, and is chosen by the previous Grand Theurge to take over after them. They wield absolute power, but a council of twelve Lesser Theurges advises them, and vote on decisions in the rare absence of a Grand Theurge, such as when they die before they get a chance to choose a successor. All thirteen are said to have a special relationship with the Iratoc's cheif deity, Ashula.

Main race:
Iratoc - A bipedal, humanoid race with blue-white skin, elongated ears and three horns. They are well adapted to the intense cold and near-constant snowfall of Arlan, but have difficulty sustaining themselves in hot environments. Additionally, having spent large amounts of their lives underground, Iratoc have naturally good night vision, but find sunlight and other bright light difficult to see in and slightly painful.

Minority races:
Just humans.

Demography:
60% Iratoc, 40% human.

Religion:
As a theocratic society, Iratoc religion is very important. They worship deities of the sun, Ashula, his three sisters, the moons Kaluseth, Alunen and Batret, and the stars, which hold a place similar to Abrahamic angels in the real world. Most are unnamed, barring a few exceptions such as Jarallian and Noellus, but are collectively known as the Valeston. Ashula rules the sky as a chief deity and the creator of all, whiles his sisters and their Valeston army guard his world for him when darkness preys upon it.

Culture:
Most of Arlan at any given time is completely covered with snow, in some places going up to a hundred metres deep. As such, surface travel is awkward, and ground vehicles are practically useless, while the entirety of Arlan's civilised locations are deep underground, in the rock below the snow. Food is produced primarily from fungi and other plantlike sources with low light requirements. Every Iratoc (and some humans) follows the same religion, and any who can make a pilgrimage to the surface in order to see the sky for themselves.
For a typical citizen of the Providence, life is dull, but not harsh. Everyone needs to do their part for it to survive as a whole, but as long as they do, things are generally uneventful. They have their role, they perform it, things continue safely. They do, however, have a strong sense of identity. They do not call themselves "The Glorious Providence" because they wish to serve the humans' interests over their own. Questioning the Providence's religion is a sure-fire way to get oneself treated poorly on Arlan, and outright denying it is a crime.

History:
During the invasion, the Iratoc hadn't yet ventured into space. The humans largely ignored Arlan, as the planet's climate made settlement difficult, and the Iratoc were undetectable to basic scans. It was only a few years later, when Arlan was considered for mining, that a mineral scan revealed huge underground networks wthin Arlan - the Providence's cities. The Providence fought the humans in a guerrilla war. They knew the tunnels better, and were more used to fighting in the darkness. Eventually, though, the humans' superior technology and numbers defeated the Providence.
Since then, a number of humans have settled in existing Iratoc cities. They were initially treated with animosity, but they made themselves useful, allowing the Providence to expand. They eventually reached high enough numbers that they could spare some materials, and began selling metals to the Empire. Ultimately, the Providence has largely benefitted from the humans, gaining significantly in technology and wealth, but these are beginning to fade. The Empire is driving a harder bargain on its trade. A few of the Lesser Theurges think they could do better alone, though so far they haven't said it aloud. Many Iratoc think those "faithless humans" could do with a conversion.

Important characters:
Grand Theurge Kalwara - A young but willful Iratoc, chosen by the previous Grand Theurge for her cleverness and ability to improvise. Having lead the Providence for four years, it has so far proven to be the correct decision.
Utwarn, Lesser Theurge of the Eleventh Seat - It is no secret that Utwarn is the elder brother of Kalwara, and her most trusted advisor. He is a zealous believer of the Providence's faith, next in line to be the Grand Theurge, and one of the strongest believers that the humans need to be ousted.
Joseph Clint, Lesser Theurge of the Eighth Seat - The decision to allow humans to become Lesser Theurges was controversial, but there has been no reason to regret it so far. Joseph is the first and only human Lesser Theurge, and an Iratoc sympathiser. Despite this, he has had difficulty in gaining any real influence on decisions.
Field Marshal Maltarn - While the Theurges hold political power, it takes someone with military expertise to command an army, and Maltarn fulfills this role. While there have been no major conflicts in the recent history of the Providence, war games have shown Maltarn to be one of the planet's brightest.

Description of military:
While the Providence is lacking in ground vehicles, its infantry are strong guerrilla fighters and have a massive advantage in dark conditions (assuming the enemy isn't using night vision equipment). In addition, their defensive capabilities are second to none. What's a missile to them when their fortifications have to hold back several tonnes of snow anyway? And that would only be relevant if the enemy knew where they were in the first place. In terms of ships, it has a good presence of fighters and small ships, but very few large ones.

Technology:
The Providence is approximately fourty years ahead of real-world technology. It still uses ballistic weapons and armour, albeit relatively advanced ones. Most of its power comes from nuclear sources, and so containment methods have been advanced to make this safer. Technologies useful underground, such as mining and the farming of low-light flora have been advanced out of proportion to other technologies, for obvious reasons.

Additional:
It is worth noting that there is no difference in power between the seats of the Lesser Theurges - the numbers are purely to differentiate between them (i.e. the Lesser Theurge of the First Seat is neither the most nor the least powerful simply because their seat is first).

Interested as well.
Classes on the first day of school always seemed a waste of time to Emily. The point of school in general was to prepare for a test that would largely determine the rest of their lives. The teachers were there to assist in that venture. So, in their assistance, they wanted to spend 20 minutes talking about the rules every class had every year anyway? Bullshit.

Still, the lessons themselves were okay. Math was always something that just clicked with Emily. Biology less so, but she'd always worked hard and as long as she did so, it didn't bother her too much. Geography, on the other hand, was annoying. There was never a specific answer, and even when it was clear, it was long-winded and tedious.

Glad it was over, Emily headed out of class for lunch. Stepping into the queue, she took her meal and watched the room, looking for anything interesting.

Emily turned her head slightly when the Elsa comment came up. Apparently, people never change. Give them one chance to attack something, simply for being different to their percieved ideals, and they attack it, physically or otherwise. As for herself, it wouldn't help her in any way to do so, so why would she?

Besides, though she couldn't empathise with people, she could agree with them, and Emily definitely agreed with the way Victoria handled these problems. Small victories, perhaps even petty, but what better word is there to describe how Victoria was treated?

Emily guessed it was probably suitable to talk to the quiet girl for a moment, more following Victoria's lead than anything else. "Jarod, hmm? Abnormal, to put it one way, but, like I said, I'm hardly in a position to judge. And, if I had to guess, I think we're in the same grade, so we might end up quite well acquainted. Unfortunately, though, it sounds like we've both got places to be. See you at lunch?"

After waiting for a moment to hear Jarod's answer, Emily would head off to her lesson. She did genuinely want to meet the other girl again, if only out of curiosity. She also wanted to keep an eye on Victoria and Junks, to see if she'd guessed right about him and the ring. It would be an interesting lunch.
