”I have to go, Phoebe… I’m happy you are sorting things out. Go be happy. Take care of yourself…” Sue hugged her tightly, crying into her chest, before letting go and lightly punching her in the stomach.

She jumped up and rubbed her tear-and-snot covered face all over Phoebe’s face before kissing her cheek. ”Promise.” She ran back to where the paintball game was.

She arrived at the general area where she’d last left her teammates, only to find them not there anymore. Perhaps it was over, she thought, and walked back in the general direction she could remember to go back to the Academy, out in the open ground.

”Can’t we help you with your “things”!? Can’t we do it together like we used to? I’m sure the Academy will understand and help you and your mom out while staying in the Academy…. I just don’t understand… and I can’t understand because I’m not you and I’m being selfish and I hate you and me right now…”

Sue didn’t really hate Phoebe, but she struggled to sign her last sentence, she now breaking down in tears, heaving in breaths and tears flowing nonstop.

”Promise you’ll come back…”, she looked up, with the blankest smile she’d ever done, her vision blurry with tears, her emotions out of control that every ambient noise around her was amplified, to the point where she could hear the ants crawl up inside the hollows of a tree.

”I don’t remember there being a gift.. I don’t even know if I can enter your room anymore. Katherin and Kijani are fine.. I’m sort of with Anthony now…”

She paused briefly, before returning: ”I can’t stay for long. They will know I am gone and… please come back…”

”How are you? I miss you. We all do.” Sue was trying her best to not be selfish and restrain her want to hit Phoebe at the side of her head so hard, but even she just really missed her and wanted to tell her everything that has happened.

Sue had wandered off far enough from the formation, her mind away from the game now, and into the deep forest in search for the origin of the sound.

Sue could hear shots being fired behind her as she marched forward. By now many of her classmates were out. Perhaps the enemy team, or perhaps her own, regardless of that she wasn’t there and she was going to bear repercussions for this. She was being selfish, and her pace had slowed to a halt. Should she turn back and actually participate in the game? Should she try to go back and make amends by trying to win them the game? She turned around, and with grief and guilt hitting her hard in the chest, walked forward, and still looking up in the lightest hope that her divergence would at least be the least fruitful.

Then there she was.

Sue started jumping up and down, flailing her arms around at Phoebe atop the tree branches. Her face was heating up, her cheeks red hot, her eyes swelling and pouring tears, her breathing erratic and anxious.

She used her paintball gun and fired a shot, just close enough to catch her attention. The paintball hit just a few feet above Phoebe’s head. That should do it.
