What you think of as grammar is prescriptive. A grammar is a vague mental algirithm speakers of a language use to generate functionally limitless instances of sentences within a language. The only way to know if a sentence is grammatical is to ask a native speaker if they would say it, or if they think it looks right. The reigning theory is that forming and using mental grammars has a biological/genetic basis in humans.
