"I try real hard to protect people and I can help you if you want, Marshall said the people here like to fight and I might not be good at fighting but I'm pretty good at stopping fights if I need to."

"Sounds awful, Roxy, I'm real sorry to hear that," Darren said and moved to put a hand on her shoulder before remembering her comment about not liking to be touched so he pulled his hand away and set it in his lap. "I can't imagine what it must have been like, I woulda done the same thing I think."

"I did the same," Darren says as he watches Roxy, "sorta, it was complicated." Darren clears his throat and sits on the bleachers of the gym, the benches creaking under his weight. "My pa was a bad man, he hit me and my sister a lot and one night he tried to do bad things to my sister and I didn't know what to do so I hit him until the police came and took me away," Darren said and watched his feet. "He died, my grandma, rest her soul, would be very upset with me for it, but I didn't know what else to do. Me and you ain't so different I guess, I mean what I did and why I did it was different from you but we both ended up in the same place for the same reason. At least we ain't alone."

"No." Darren says bluntly. "He deserved it, but I do regret letting my sister see it." He says and looks at her. "I know it's rude to pry, but what did you do, Roxy?" Darren asks, his curiosity getting the better of him.

"I didn't mean that, Roxy, I do trust you, I'm just nervous about somebody getting hurt, that's all," Darren said with a smile, "Believe me, I earned my sentence too."

"Nothing really," Darren said, deciding to take a break and speak to Tyler, "I wanted to get out of here because she said Vlad won't let us out, but I need to see my sister, so I'm going to escape somehow and try to bring as many of you with me as I can and she said I should try and become a leader but I'm not so good at leading, I don't think I'm smart enough for something like that. But if I escape I'll still bring you all with me if I can"

Darren was still nervous about the idea but he decided to trust Roxy. "Okay, I think I can trust you," he said as he smiled at her, trying to reassure himself more than Roxy.

"Oh, um..." Darren suddenly seems extremely nervous. "I've never really used one before and I'm not much of a fighter, plus if you get hurt somehow by accident it would be my fault and you won't want to be my friend." Darren nervously twiddled his thumbs and tried not to look at Roxy or the knife. He had never liked fighting but the thought of fighting someone he thought of as a friend, even if they had only just met, was worse.

Darren chuckles and smiles at her with his typical big goofy grin. "At least you're good at fighting, I can't do anything but hug people until they fall asleep," he says and shrugs.
