@LovelyAnastasia Glad to have you on board! That makes three people interested, once I get two more I'll put up the OOC and get the ball rolling!
@User In this, the EU will be just one of many groups of humans who have a space agency capable of maintaining colonies. Basically the EU of the Event Horizon world works very similar to how the EU works today, except that they are responsible for the space agency centered in France, which is funded not just by France but all members of the European Union. Likewise, the American space agency is not just used and financed by the US, but also by Japan, Mexico and Israel. Essentially it's just groups of countries uniting under alliances to claim areas of the universe.

I haven't had the opportunity to read The Expanse series yet, though it's been recommended to me by a few people!

Edit: @DeepestApology Sorry, I seem to have missed your actual question last time around. The EU still isn't a centralized federation, but rather has taken on the role of becoming an alliance for nations that are individually too small to make an impact with regards to space colonization.
@DeepestApology Yep! All of the major human factions, the EU among them, are included under the description for Earth in The Universe tab. In the near future I'll likely be including a more complete and separate description of each faction and how their respective governments and space programs developed.
@User Probably, and I'll allow the latter -- someone who, perhaps, used to work there, or was just on leave back on Earth, or something.

@DeepestApology Absolutely!

Politics: Humanity is still fractured along the lines of her nations on Earth, and this nationalism has translated to most colonies, with a few exceptions (the B.A.S.S. being one notable one; see "The Universe"). Essentially, certain governments lay claim to areas of, say, Mars or the moon, and have developed those properties into thriving cities which may be connected to the cities of other nations through an extensive system of airlocks. Immigration is about as common on other planets as it is on Earth, and most nations encourage it to an extent. As a result, each city or colony distinctly belongs to one nation, though the population is certainly not homogeneous.

Aliens: If we're talking strictly sentient species, then no, humans have not discovered anything that appears to be on par with their own intelligence. They have found "life", but that comes in the form of bacteria found on distant planets. At this point, that's the extent; although the human race has not gotten too far into the spacefaring age: they've really only explored the Milky Way, and had just begun to explore Ursa Major and other nearby galaxies. Just because aliens aren't in this at the start, doesn't mean they aren't coming.

Characters: Ideally, a mix of both. Probably primarily government employees or soldiers sent to investigate, but if someone's character has a certain skill-set that would aid the mission, I imagine that they'd be hired to accompany the team. That would include mercenaries or skilled civilians, such as a scientist.
@User That's more or less what I was going for here as well, although I'd probably give everyone information as soon as they reached a certain point in the story, and it'd be up to them as to how to proceed. For example, I'm planning on keeping the identity of the "monster" (the thing that killed everyone at the lab) a secret until the group actually reached the lab and found the first body. After that, everyone would be free to interact with this information however they please.

Hey, welcome to the Guild! Hopefully you find what you're looking for here. Hope to see you around!
For me, my best two moments are connected, but occurred about a year or two apart from one another.

So, back on the old Guild Site I was a part of a large zombie survival RP set in The Walking Dead universe, but taking place on the West Coast. My character joined about a month after the roleplay actually began, just after the group of survivors had moved from their original safehouse to a new location. He was essentially among the first refugees to join the original, core group. Along the way he had kept a journal, chronicling the events of their rag-tag little faction.

That roleplay lasted for another year or two, dipping occasionally, and losing many of the original cast along the way. By the end, my character had become one of the primary political leaders of the group, had gotten engaged to another survivor and adopted an orphaned boy as their son. But the roleplay was winding down, and needed some sort of a conclusion. Eventually it was decided that the story would end with the vast majority of the characters stranded on the roof of a school while the horde clambered up the stairs, allowing a few others to escape and live another day. We left it at a cliffhanger.

It was revived for about a couple months after that. My character was one of the few to have survived the battle at the school, but he had gotten bitten not a few weeks later. Struggling against the infection, he ran away from the rest of the survivors, holed himself up in a warehouse and began to go insane, writing constantly in the journal. In the end, he succumbed. His death was probably the saddest moment I'd ever written, while also being one of my favorites.

About a month later, the site crashed.

Fast forward a year or so. A few people from the original RP were still around, and we rebooted it for a third installment. I played a new character (obviously). In his possession was another man's journal, a battered old thing he had looted off the body of a walker he found while looting a warehouse. A flashback showed the moment when my new character came across the remnants of my old character and had to end his life yet again. On the bright side, a part of him was able to live on in the journal.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! It usually depends on the type of genre I'm trying to write -- though generally classic rock ballads and songs with lyrical depth and focus tend to work best for me, such as Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand (nothing like ~11 minutes of Robert Plant singing about youthful adventure to spark creativity). Recently though I found the song Far Away by José González, which is exclusively acoustic guitar and haunting vocals, and always seems to get me into the mood to write.
