Yeah starting slow lets you get better at painting.Also, the thing about small craft is, we don't want anyone to start off super MLG Lvl120 Dragonknight Rider with a 10,000 year old ancient Elder Dragon of Legend.So if you want to be a small craft pilot, you'll probably get a propeller scout plane with 2 LMGs on it. Later on, we can find stuff that will upgrade your plane, or certain points in the RP you'll get a completely new plane.

Yeah, essentially I want a p51-d Mustang.

I'm not getting anywhere anytime soon either, but I feel it's better to start slow than to wait till I can afford everything at once, gives me time to paint.
