he could always just poke Alaira's mind if she gets too violent :p

That's kinda like jabbing her in the stomach with superheated rebar.

Not to mention if the foes make it possible, but keep in mind Freeshooter, Alaira would've been made aware she's a representative of the school and Serge (Not Khan, mind you) wouldn't teach a student who causes too much trouble for the school.

Well, Alaira is exceptionally violent, but she'd probably advocate killing the bandits because whenever mr. mind mage leaves they'll be right back to plundering.

Indeed. He is still a warrior by trade, and his magic does have some combat applications. Still, if he had the choice on a mission to start a fight with a group of bandits (or something), or manipulate the mind of their leader to make them surrender (once he is more experienced, of course), he would chose the latter. Who knows, there are all kinds of situations I could imagine where manipulation and trickery could provide alternatives to fighting. It would all depend on the nature of the mission. I think that goes along well with Ssarak's theme of being a regretful warrior. For the moment, though, he keeps himself well practiced and in shape, as his best means of defense is through his fighting skill.

Ah, but that depends on if the rest of the party want to do things peacefully.
Also, this one.

Shit, that'll be the day, huh? I heard the Wanderer pretty much wiped out the entire Pitt Trogs himself. Not that they were much to talk about to begin with, but still, that purge man. I'm more scared of one of his bigger buddies though, and I'm not just talking about the Ferryman. You ever heard of that one guy who was scouted near the Lamplighters? Everyone thought he was with the DC mutants but moved in with the Underworld Ghouls. But he didn't join them, just the Wanderer. And I'm sort of glad he did, next to Prime, that guy's the biggest, meanest sonavabitch who could mow down entire teams with a hard glare.

The courier got shot in the head and it just made him angrier. Sonuvabitch killed the biggest damn deathclaw I've ever seen and bolted it's hand to his arm, and on top of that, the dudes the most brilliant scientist in the world.

Skyrim with guns.

Essentially the worst way to describe it, but it gets the point across.
