Why do you want magnetic weaponry so much?
'sides, I havent laid out everything yet. Although now I'm certain that the most advanced of tech won't be utilized. I want things like gauss rifles and plasma cannons to be special, advanced technology that you have to fight tooth and nail to acquire. If you start with things like that, what's the point in getting loot? you already have a gatling laser, why care about a magnetic gun? No, I like a sense of progression to be apparent. I've gone through it, and I tell ya, the day you throw out that craptastic hunting shotgun for a railgun is immensely satisfying.
Coilguns were declared a dead-end and never mass-produced, the cost of their construction for such a minor advantage over normal fire-arms, coupled with the extreme stress put on the gun (and subsequent cost of repairs) meant that they were useless as small-arms. Thing is, weapons tech never advanced much, as the weapons themselves never got much deadlier, or at least not enough to justify the massive spike in price. There might be prototype Gauss weaponry available somewhere, but it is extremely rare tech.
Well, I said 'their' own ship. Sorry, it is a group thing. And I'm afraid that energy weapon is very high end. Thing is, energy weapons in this setting are quite large, more akin to cannons. For instance the smallest energy weapon is the Gungnir Laser Destroyer, which is roughly the size of an M60. I'm thinking more of a grimy kind of Sci-fi, more industrial, less 'Ipod.' As for railguns, they aren't man-portable. In fact, Browning M2s are still in use! Sometimes, you can't beat the classics.
Energy weapons are a bit high tier, I'm thinking of starting you off with Slug throwers. Also, now might be a good time to elect a captain, as my duty is strictly NPCs.
Okay, we have interest. Now, does anyone have any preferences about anything? I'm pretty accommodating as long as there's no 'dual katana guy in a trench-coat' type characters.

Also, Google chrome seems to think katana isn't a word.
I like to start out vague, since I don't wanna risk an idea I'd lovingly crafted for weeks bombing because nobody cares.

Anything you'd like?
Although I can say that there probably won't be aliens.
But there was no skill that completely rendered another worthless, they all stacked.
Huh. okay.
