Meh, depending on what you go with, if it's Rook, or Knight, then I suggest a melee weapon to switch to. If you're going Bishop, make the spells simple. Kest will do the rest, namely in helping balancing them out and what not.

Oh I don't know about that, it has a very nice old world feel to it, and the locals are always so social. You can never get away from them! Sometimes I have to beat them back with a stick.
