Kojiro was on his way back to headquarters after spending his entire morning dealing with a hostage situation in a neighboring city. He received word that a man, being chased by authorities after robbing a local jewelry store had run into a local elementary school and taken the students and faculty captive. Since Kojiro’s agency was pretty close, he was called in to help deescalate the situation and rescue the hostages if necessary. The ordeal took longer than expected but in the end, no one got hurt and the culprit was apprehended so it was a win in his book.

After everything was over, he thought it’d be nice to walk back to his agency. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, and he felt great. Although it was tiring and most times stressful, saving people was something he thoroughly enjoyed. It gave him a sense of euphoria.
People immediately began to recognize him as he turned to walk up a busy street.

“Oh my god, is that the pro hero Kurogane?” He could hear one woman ask her friend as her face lit up. He flashed a quick smile and waved at the pair as they passed. He continued waving, smiling, and greeting people as they spotted him.

A small boy, accompanied by his parents stopped him to ask for an autograph and Kojiro was happy to oblige. He had just finished high fiving the young boy when he heard a series of small explosions nearby. He looked up and saw a cloud of smoke rising up from a block or two away. “You folks head that way and be careful,” he said to the family as he directed them in the opposite direction of the commotion.
“What now,” he mumbled as he started sprinting towards the chaos.

Rounding a corner, he could now see that there was something crazy going down at Balla Halla Bank. Through the smoke, he could see people fighting what looked like robots in front of the bank. Some of them had already been disposed of and lay on the ground in heaps of steaming metal and sparking circuitry. One of the people battling the bots he recognized as the pro hero The Slippery One. The other he didn’t know but his face looked strangely familiar.

Just as he gets out front, he sees a helicopter flying away from the bank and concludes it must be the people responsible for the attack. They were getting away but at this point there was nothing he could do about it.

A loud roar from one of the hero’s got his attention back to the fight. Turning back to the cyborgs, he pulled his staff from its place on his back and jumped into the fray. A cyborg leapt at him and he brought his weapon into both hands and swung swiftly, hitting it right in its abdomen. As he swung he used his quirk to change the properties of the metal in his staff, making it significantly more dense. When it connected, it was like the cyborg got hit with a mac truck and it exploded as it went rocketing into a nearby car.

Three more came after him. He decreased the density of his staff to give him more maneuverability and swung it in an arc striking all three cyborgs and pushing them back. This gave him a bit more space to operate in. One to his left came at him and he kicked it away. At the same time, the cyborg to his right swiped at him and he stretched the metal of his staff, making it into a small shield to block the blow. He then swung around to grab the one he had just kicked and threw him into the other two. Reshaping the metal in his weapon once more, this time into a spear, he chucked it at the cyborgs, skewering all three at once. As they powered down he grabbed the spear and ran next to the other heroes. “Didn’t look like you guys needed a hand, but I thought I’d help anyway,” he said smiling at them and preparing to turn more of the cyborgs into spare parts.
Light from the rising sun began to beam through the windows of the Black Steel Hero Agency. Kojiro, fast sleep on the couch in his office, started to stir as the rays of light illuminated the room. He opened his eyes, squinting at the near blinding light now shining directly in his face. After a few moments, he slid himself off of the couch and yawned loudly while he stretched his waking body out. ‘I’ve either gotta stop sleeping here so often or find myself a more comfortable couch,’ he thought as he twisted his body trying to crack his aching back.

This was the third time in as many days that he stayed at the office late. He’d take care of paper work and go on patrols during the day and then follow that up with training until he was too exhausted to go home. This hectic schedule left him with almost no free time but with all the increased villain activity lately, he had to step things up a notch. Something big was about to go down soon. He could sense it, feel it in his bones. And when it did, he wanted to be ready.

Looking at the time, he realized it was barely dawn. It would be hours before any of his sidekicks or assistants came in. After a quick change of clothes, he took the elevator up to the top floor. The entire floor had been converted into a dojo for both his personal use and to instruct his sidekicks and students in the martial arts. Black mats covered the entirety of the floor, while the walls were painted a metallic chrome color. The walls were adorned with kanji symbols of the virtues of Bushido: morality, courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, and loyalty.

The one wall not covered with symbols was racked top to bottom with an assortment of melee weapons. There were several types of swords as well as staffs, spears, halberds, daggers, escrima sticks, kama, sais, nunchaku, etc. Other than the wooden weapons that the students used for practice, everything else was made by Kojiro himself. He used a combination of his quirk and the blacksmithing techniques he learned back at home, making sure to never sharpen any of the bladed weapons. “I can’t go around killing or dismembering people. I am a hero after all,” he once said to one of his students when they inquired about the dull weapons.

He stepped out of the elevator and sat in the middle of the floor to briefly meditate. After a few moments passed, he got up and strolled over to the wall of weapons. He surveyed the wall intensely before grabbing two metallic short staffs and walking back to the center of the room. Using his quirk, he began to merge the two short staffs into a slightly longer staff. While the length didn’t increase by much, the density, strength, and weight of the weapon was now far greater. Just as he was about to begin the session, his phone beeped, indicating a text message had come in.

“Who the hell is messaging me this early?”

Curiosity got the best of him as it often did, so he dropped the staff and dug around in his pocket for his phone. His eyes widened as he read the message, the mild annoyance he felt a moment ago now turning into shock and concern. “Fucking hell,” he cursed loudly as he picked up the staff and headed back towards the elevator.

While his parents were content to live secluded in the mountains, hammering their lives away, he had bigger plans in mind for himself. As soon as he was able to, he left his old life behind in order to find his true purpose in life.

He traveled the world learning different styles of swordsmanship and martial arts as he went. During these travels, his eyes were opened to just how cold and harsh the outside world was. With his empathetic nature, he couldn’t stand to see so many people suffering and in need. It was then, that he decided to spend his life in protection of others and vowed to become a hero.
