They are not. There are countless universes, some of which may contain multiple planets with different life-forms, or just one. There are a few versions of Equestria where stars are not actually stars but small lights hung in the sky by the princesses. Those universes are very small, obviously.

Huh... Equestria? Like, a planet for horses, or other like creatures?

This is the closest thing to what the city looks like in my imagination that I can find online. A lot of the place has blue lights though. Almost like Tron.
