Name: Julius Charlton
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Former Occupation: Student/Part Time Worker at a phone shop.
Appearance:

Julius wears thin, half-rimmed glasses (he prefers not to have the rim at the bottom of his vision as it is a constant reminder of his terrible eyesight). They are plain in design, black with silver arms and no visible designer logo. This goes for almost all of his clothing - plain with no large logos or statements. Julius prefers to wear white or pale blue polo shirts, clean dark blue jeans with no rub marks or 'designer styles'. If the weather calls for it he has a black, ankle-length, wool and cashmere trench coat and prefers to use an umbrella, dislike hoods of any kind on clothing.

Height: 5' 6"
Weight: 70Kg/11lb
Scars/Tattoos/Other: Wears glasses (is very short-sighted so he must wear them at all times), no tattoos or scars.
Past Affiliates: Julius has (had?) a fiancée back in Wales (UK) where he went to the same university right on the coast in a small town called Aberystwyth.
Both his parents and his little brother, three years junior to him, lived in south-west England while his older brother, just under six years his elder, lived in the midland area of England.
A few friends from his course at university (and a few others) had travelled with him across the Atlantic as part of an exchange programme. He has found the vast majority's corpses while two, maybe three (he's not sure how many exactly were on the programme) might still be alive. Only one he knows by name (Andrew) and he has yet to find evidence of either his death or continued life.

Current Affiliates: None. Andrew maybe alive but Julius has no clues as to where he might be and whether he is, in fact, still alive at all.

Skills: Julius is intelligent, mostly in an academic sense and has a particular skill for skimming through books for the information he needs. This largely comes from having studied history at university, now in his third and final year. He has little experience with practical applications but is not too poor with a hammer although more complex constructions will leave him intimidated. He also happens to know some basic first aid from his final years at school volunteering at the local hospital; perhaps more vital is that he worked on the burns ward at the hospital and so very few injuries will now upset his stomach. Unfortunately, due to his lack of qualifications or certified training his first aid skills are largely self-taught with no consistent knowledge.

Strengths: He is quick to grasp new concepts, situations and is a fairly good read of people. He remains calm in (most) stressful situations but will become panicked when a problem he feels he is incapable of solving presents itself.

Weaknesses: Julius does not have masses of initiative, preferring to follow than to lead even when he disagrees with the course being taken. He is often both short-termist and long-sighted in equal measures, often failing to come up with a middle ground solution. He also lacks empathy, which is an asset in reading others' emotions but a definite disadvantage when it comes to handling emotionally charged situations. As a result he can come across as cold and calculating, even during times when he's attempting to factor in others' feelings.

Julius also very particular. Sometimes this can be a boon when quality is the most important aspect of choice but his unstinting insistence on some areas, such as clothing, can be disadvantageous and rule out a wide variety of choice. So strong is this part of his personality that it will genuinely throw off his entire mood and confidence if there is no option which fits his criteria.

History: Born and raised in England, in various parts of the country, Julius has no particular region to provide loyalty to other than the country as a whole of which he is tremendously patriotic (but nationalistic, it must be said). At a young age it became clear that he had difficulty understanding others' emotions and reasoning as his was so far off anyone else's, although he had no trouble in reading and identifying emotion. In fact, he had quite a talent in this area and led a long series of doctors to confusion as to the diagnosis; he was not very far on the autism spectrum which was the usual culprit in such matters.

Eventually his parents simply accepted that Julius was 'different' from others'. There was no event or condition that this peculiarity could be assigned to, especially as Julius himself was not unfeeling; he had simply locked down his emotions at a young age having dismissed them as illogical and irritating. His friendships were often difficult arrangements, and few in number, as a result of his dismissal of 'illogical' social etiquette such as small talk. This lead him to be a hard studier, many more social activities thus becoming shut off to him, as he realised he made most people feel uncomfortable.

A successful academic career had him going to an isolated university, rather than Cambridge or Oxford which both gave him offers, on the corner of Wales where he could enjoy a degree of seclusion despite the high numbers of boisterous students in the town. A part time job gave him the income he needed to afford his fairly luxurious requirements (comfy seating, bedding, intelligent storage for his numerous books both academic and leisure, white goods to save time on more mundane tasks) with his scholarship funds going on academic supplies.

Due to his continued success at university, at least in the academic sphere - he had briefly joined a few clubs and societies in an attempt to broaden his skill base but had quickly found he did not fit in with any of the groups, he was chosen with a few others to take part in an exchange programme. Julius saw this as an opportunity to increase his experience with the world without overly stepping outside of his comfort zones and instantly accepted the proposition, the expenses all paid for. He left for the States with one other from his history course and other selected students from a variety of subjects; one of whom was Andrew who had switched from a Marine Biology course to studying psychology and found Julius a fascinating subject.

The programme had only begun at the end of September so Julius had only been in the States for a short time before hell itself seemed to come to Earth. It has been some time since he has had human contact, often avoiding groups as he suspected some would turn to less civilised methods of interaction in the devastation. The library had been his place of refuge for the past few months, having moved the corpses out of the building and finding methods to block entrances in case less friendly sorts came to his new home.

An old radio, whose batteries he had replaced several times now, which had been silent for about two months suddenly started up with a broken message. Piecing together what he could from the poor reception, Julius gathered a few essentials and then headed out for this place promising safe refuge.

After all, even he would go stir crazy without anyone else to talk to.
@RPforthatPR Well, once you get involved in more than just one RP, or when you get to GM one (or more) - plus your real life starts to get in your way - you'll probably begin to appreciate the slow paced ones :D

Full time work and marriage means I only have a certain allotted time a day to post, assuming my evening is not already booked up with family/friend visits. I can do OOC and read IC via my phone but posting is a bit more of time sink.
I'll be trying to get something up today but it'll be more likely tomorrow when I have access to a computer rather than just my tablet.
I have now edited my IC post - all I needed to do was remove the part about the gem. Sorry for the wait on that one!
I have edited my CS to reflect Alexis' new role. She will remain a knight but not a gem bearer.
Nights in the Traveller's Den were rather eerie, Alexis had decided. There were almost no people in the streets, civilians let alone the groups of soldiers regularly patrolling towns and cities across Obrethon. The war had made a lot of people suspicious of one another; it had also led to an increase in banditry which was the main reason so many guards were employed at town gates and most entrances were sealed at night.

Not so here. There were no patrols and no defencible gates; only the magic and although she had come to grow comfortable with the presence of it through her use of the Water Gem she still put more faith in the things she could predict and control: people, steel and ingenuity. Shi'larra had taught her about how the world worked, how to look after herself and how to treat others. The war had taught her how to fight, what the people who couldn't be saved were like and how far some would go when pushed or threatened. She had made friends and enemies in equal measure while gaining a reputation as a honest dealer but also as a ruthless, dishonourable killer with no regard for the ancient codes of chivalry; somewhat uncharitably.

Resting on her knees was the naked blade of her longsword as she ran a clean cloth up and down the blade. It had been newly sharpened but she had seen too many blades suffer from rust due to lack of cleaning; the edge of a blade wasn't the only important thing. Bad care would lead it to weaken, to rust or simply soften, and then it would fail its wielder when they most needed it to be strong and sturdy. The blade was long since wiped clean of the dirt of her journey to that place, gleaming softly in the moonlight, but Alexis found the activity kept her calm and alert; a habit she had picked up during the wars. Everyone came up with some kind of coping mechanism: some drank, some gambled, some joked and boasted, others found the arms of a lover (paid or unpaid). She simply found pleasure in carrying out a monotonous, basic task that might serve to save her life in the future.

"The question is, who arrives first?" She muttered to herself. All the knights who held gems would have heard of each other and she feared her common background would put her at a disadvantage if the others teamed together; that was not the purpose of their coming together but she knew all too well how petty the aristocracy could be.
Rhiannon suspected that the group was not okay with bringing Lao along and cursed her sentimentality; how had she forgotten that the boy had actually tried to burn them to a crisp? Of course, they had all lived through the attack with nary a scratch and yes he may have been misguided in enacting his class irritation but that hardly changed the facts.

She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, weighing up whether in actual fact it would be more beneficial to decamp at night with the others and leave him behind. She knew no one else would trust him and they would make no headway if they were constantly expecting a fireball to the back. Still, for now at least they needed to act as a group. The first hours would be the most dangerous, with the highest chance of encountering another student in the jungle. Once they had spread out it would become far more unlikely to end up in a pitched fight; the hot heads would have wiped each other out and only those focused on the end goal of passing the test would win. A thought suddenly occurred to her and she glanced at the group again, chewing her lip before speaking.

"I know this is a bit out of left field but... what if this test is evaluated on how long it took us to get out of the jungle? Maybe the headmaster simply encouraged the in-fighting to weed out those unsuitable for the Academy in the early stages and there's no fixed number of potential applicants? He only ever mentioned a time limit as the criteria for this test." Rhiannon was largely musing out loud now, speaking slowly as she worked her way to a relevant conclusion while thoughts buzzed around her head and she attempted to select the relevant ones.

"I... think what I'm trying to say is that we're clearly not going to work as a group. Most of us want to tie up and leave Fireboy - I mean Lao - here. It certainly lowers all our chances of beating that time limit if we're all expecting a fireball in the back at any moment. I know you promised not to but, no offence, I don't know you at all besides the recent events and that's not much to go on." She looked to the others and spread her hands, shrugging.

"So I think a compromise is in order? The larger our group, the less chance we'll be distracted or interrupted by any of the idiotic hot-heads - sorry Lao - lashing out at everyone simply because they were allowed to. They'll all kill each other off by the end of the first day while those remaining will either be the strong ones or people who are more intent on passing this test than testing out their powers." She licked her lips nervously as she came to the crux of the matter.

"...So in the end, the best solution for us is to travel as this group until nightfall. We can then re-evaluate the situation and see whether it is worth continuing as we are or splitting up if the large part of the danger has passed. I believe that's probably the best strategy... for all of us."

Then the redhead stopped speaking and looked down at the ground, shuffling her feet.

"Unless... anyone else had thought of something else?"
Name: Alexis Chandle
Age: 29
Kingdom: Kingdom of the Misty Rivers
Gemstone: None.
Appearance:

She forgoes the standard armour that almost all her fellow knights prefer, instead choosing lighter protection in the form of a hard leather breastplate with a light chain mail shirt. She wears a long skirt, metal plated leather, rather than full length greaves for the sole reason she specialises in ground combat rather than from horseback.
A rapier is the weapon she prefers, strapped to her waist, but carries a sturdier longsword either on her back or in her horse's saddlebags as appropriate.

Background: Alexis was born a commoner. She knows not who her parents are, the first memory she has is of being in one of the less illustrious entertainment houses that could be found near everywhere in the known world. She still does not know where that place was; nor does she have any desire to go back.

The first half of her life so far was spent in that place, forced to work in the kitchens as soon as she could walk. If she did not work fast enough then she would be punished, if she spoke out in defence of herself or anyone else then she would be punished. Her life was an absolute misery but she knew no one outside of that tavern, nor anything about the outside world.

When she approached her teenage years the patrons of the tavern looked and spoke to her differently and that was the trigger which forced her to escape. She knew what work the other ladies were forced into by the owner; how badly they were treated and that their average life expectancy was very low. Alexis had seen so many bodies discretely disposed of in the darkness of the night; rich and powerful patrons having exacted crueller tastes on the workers than most would.

One night she fled into the unknown world, taking an old but newly sharpened kitchen knife with her and half a loaf of bread with her. Several weeks later she found herself in the Myrruan forest, barely alive from lack of food and clean drink. She had suffered several attacks in her escape of the city she had been in, cruel pursuers rough in their attempts to recapture her and as a result she was covered in bruises. Finally free of her old world, she collapsed in the midst of the forest.

Days later she found herself in a tavern, in a different town. Her wounds had been tended to and she was dressed in new clothes, better than she had ever known before. It quickly became apparent she had been saved by someone wandering through the forest and over the coming days, weeks, months and years she became very familiar with her saviour; taught the ways of the world by her.

They parted ways just before the wars began, Alexis vowing to repay the woman who had rescued her in the forest as soon as she was able to. Several years fighting as a scout and skirmisher, travelling lightly and focussing on lethal fighting techniques rather than standard combat etiquette, for the Kingdom of the Misty Rivers gave her a degree of renown. She used this, as she had been taught, along with some gambling and shows of confidence to gain the title of 'Knight'.

Then the request came for her to join Shi'larra. Seeing the potential danger brewing, the new King immediately approved her request to join the sorceress, outfitting her with the finest armour and weapons he could afford and asked that she aid the bearer of the water gem as she could.

Personality: Generally a bright person, sometimes forcefully optimistic (after all, whatever happened there was still more than in her younger years) Alexis has a ruthless streak; she knows that sometimes there is no saving someone from themselves and that bestowing mercy is not always an appropriate action. Her fighting techniques reflect this: when she draws her weapon it is to kill, not merely to defeat.
She is fiercely loyal and will repay debts with interest, often if that means she gives up all that she has built in her life. At this time she only holds one such debt and that is to Shi'larra, the woman who saved her.

Fighting skills: Alexis' strength is speed. Most knights could easily overpower her and so she sacrifices heavy armour and large weapons for lighter equipment. Her leather and mail armour will stop most weapons except javelins and a short range arrow or a crossbow bolt however it will simply not hold up to persistent attack; she will still feel every blow but they will be less likely to kill her. She can be lighter on her feet, nimble enough to dodge enemy attacks and move into their blind spots, thanks to her armour. It will also give her time to find the chinks and weaknesses in her opponent's defence. She carries three weapons: daggers for the most desperate situations, hidden in her concealed slots of leather breastplate, which can be thrown or used for more personal work; a thin rapier which is her weapon of choice, speedy and capable of sliding between plate armour to find the target underneath; and also a longsword for when her rapier is simply not up to the job. This last weapon is her only form of defence and she can dual wield to some extent but her speed and proficiency is considerably reduced.
Hey guys - I'm taking over as the Knight of the Misty Rivers so that we can get things rolling. I'll have the CS up in the next hour.
We can always split up at nightfall. It seemed the best resolution without anyone's character being horribly maimed at the time.

Also attacks from others might split them up/turn them against each other.
