The flyers for the upcoming Halloween dance were everywhere. About a week ago, Calien had taken one home and pinned it on her wall so she wouldn’t forget about it. She wasn’t exactly into school dances, but it was Halloween and she didn’t have any other plans. She didn’t want to spend her favorite time of the year sitting alone in her room watching scary movies all night like she had last year.

She was a bit nervous about her costume, though. It showed… a bit more skin than she was used to, but it was of a character she really liked and she was planning on wearing it to a local convention later in the year. The dance was sort of a test run.

Almost as soon as she opened her locker, Calien was pulled out of her thoughts by a sudden commotion across the hall. The noise made her jump, and then she was nearly knocked over by the quickly forming crowd of spectators for the apparent fight. By the time she managed to get what she needed out of her locker and close it, everyone had dispersed, except for what looked like the loser of the fight and a few of his friends.

Calien considered asking if he was okay, but it looked like his friends had the situation handled. Avoiding eye contact with anyone, she left for her class.

Mieke took the note that Leonard offered her, looking at it in confusion. It only contained symbols she didn’t understand. How was this supposed to teach her anything? Just as she opened her mouth to ask a question, her mind flooded with new information, leaving her flustered and a bit dizzy.

“Whoa... I know things now? Did you just make me know things?”

It was a rather unorthodox teaching method, but it worked. She had a grasp on how Stands worked, as opposed to earlier, when she was entirely clueless. As she placed herself on the bike’s seat and held on tight, her thoughts shifted to her own Stand. There likely wouldn’t be enough time to experiment and find out her abilities while they were looking for the target. Most likely, she would have to figure things out once they found the guy.

It seemed like Blue had given her Stand a name, too. Mieke would have to give that some thought…

Calien’s heart pounded as she was woken up by her ridiculously loud alarm. Flailing to find her phone and shut it off, she regretted choosing that particular song. Completely taken out of her comfortable sleep, though, she remembered why she did. It felt like the audio equivalent to a shot of espresso.

Basically, the day began exactly like every day since the start of the school year. Business as usual.

She quickly got out of bed, cleaning up and getting dressed in record time. She then, like clockwork, packed up her bag and made her lunch. As soon as she opened the container of cold cuts, her cat Tuxedo Mask started rubbing against her legs trying to convince her to give him some meat.

“Hello my handsome man!” She bent down to give him some love. He immediately flopped down on the floor and rolled over onto his back, purring like a motorboat.

After a few minutes of vigorous petting, Calien stood up again and washed her hands, as they were covered in cat hair now. Once she was done, she finished making her food and hurried out the door while she was still the only one awake. She slowed down a little once she started the walk to school, putting on her headphones and playing some music and letting her mind wander.

So far, Sophomore year had been nothing special. The mourning period that came with the end of summer had faded, leaving a feeling of somber resignation in its wake. The classes were shit, the people were... mostly shit, it was just a slow, painful journey to graduation.

For Calien, part of that journey was living a lie. Well, she didn’t like to think of it as a lie; it was more like acting. Playing the part of a Calien who was just a normal straight guy rather than, well, the exact opposite. It’s not like she really wanted to play that part, though. It’s just that things would be much worse for her if she was truthful.

Just make it to college. Then you can be as queer as your heart desires.

As she reached the school and entered the building, she put on her mask, trying to will into her body energy she didn’t have.

One day at a time.
hopefully it's okay that the history is vague, but at least there's a reason behind it

❣ Upside Down & Inside Out - OK GO ❣

Well, at least she’d be in her element here. The target seemed to be someone after Mieke’s own heart, frequenting botanical gardens and other flowery places. She was still horribly nervous about a possible confrontation with another Stand user, but the idea of having that confrontation in such a beautiful place surrounded by something she loves comforted her a little.

Trying to ignore Hogan’s rather intimidating hiss, she spoke up, “I could help check out the gardens and stuff. I, uh, really like places like those.”

She turned to Leonard, “I’d be cool with riding with you. I’ll just hold on really hard.”

Mieke looked down as her phone buzzed again, this time with a message from her mom.

How are things over there?

That was an issue: how in the world was she going to explain this? Oh, it turns out I have a weird bird-monster-spirit-summon thing and I’m supposed to hunt down other people with spirit-monsters and maybe kill them? No. Of course not. That’d be ridiculous.

She typed a quick, vague text in response. Fine. Kinda weird.

That was the best she could do.

❣ Curveballs - The Wombats ❣

Mieke didn’t particularly appreciate being called an “untrained and ignorant child,” but she reminded herself that it was, honestly, the truth. Still, she appreciated Leonard offering to show her the ropes.

“Thanks. That would be a big help.”

She listened as Armstrong continued, her stomach twisting at the mention of potentially having to “execute” the perpetrator. When she answered that letter, she hadn’t agreed to possibly killing someone. There was no way she could go back home and continue life as usual after that.

“Well,” she thought, trying to calm her nerves, “Maybe they just don’t know what they’re doing and we can talk some sense into them. Or maybe it’s not even a person doing this at all! It could be literally anything!”

She was making a valiant attempt at being optimistic, but it wasn’t really working.

What was behind the door when it swung open did a much better job of wiping her mind clean. It looked like a man wrestling a crocodile. Definitely not anything she expected to see today. Her expression was blank as she regarded her last teammate. The crocodile, not the man. Obviously.

Armstrong introduced him as Hogan, and Mieke reacted the only way that made sense to her.

“Hi, Hogan.”

❣ Lose Your Soul - Dead Man's Bones ❣

Mieke subtly retreated to the edge of the room and sat down in one of the chairs while the others were talking. Looking at the beautifully designed business card the tattooed man had handed her, she committed everyone’s names to memory. They all seemed like interesting people; she wouldn’t mind getting to know them more.

She mentally kicked herself, realizing that she hadn’t introduced herself, and if she did now, it would be awkward. Well, she would get an opportunity eventually.

A touch on her arm made Mieke jump a little bit, and she looked up at Blue. She smiled and blushed in response to the woman complimenting her hair, her face lighting up immensely.

“Ah, thank you! Um-“

She had been about to introduce herself, but she was interrupted by the receptionist ushering them into the office.

Mieke listened to the man’s speech, feeling more lost by the moment. A “Stand?” Was that the figure she had been seeing? And what was this about altering the world? She gazed at Blue’s Stand in awe. She had never seen anything like it; and the confirmation that her bird friend wasn’t just in her head was comforting.

So, their job would be to find other new Stand users and set them on the right path. It seemed noble enough, and it was hard to say no when this could be her mother’s ticket out of debt. Mieke breathed a sigh of relief when Armstrong said they wouldn’t be killing anyone. She couldn’t even bring herself to step on a spider, let alone take a human life.

Blue, however, didn’t seem to feel the same, and her outburst made Mieke jump and let out an embarrassing little “Eek!” She immediately covered her mouth, turning red and shrinking into herself.

She regained her composure by the time Armstrong asked for questions. Perfect, because she had a shitload.

She spoke up, wringing her hands, “Um, is there any more you could tell me about Stands? Sorry, I’m just… really in the dark here.”
