Coast City, Northgate park

Rebekah is exhausted.

The day seemed normal to start; the park was full of joggers and young children playing. Rebekah had already gone toe to toe with the local double dutch club, she had played against Mr. Hamas at the chess tables and lost like always I swear that man is cheating, and had helped a few tourists find their way around the park to the best hotdog stand in the city. She was on her third Chicago dog when her radio blared to life.

"ATTENTION ALL UNITS: THERE ARE REPORTS OF SEVERAL DISTURBANCES ACROSS THE CITY, CODE 245. EMERGENCY ALERT LEVEL DELTA

Rebekah nearly choked on her hot dog. She jumped up from the bench she was seated at, scanning the area for any signs of danger. Grabbing her radio from her belt, she reports in to the HQ.
"This is Officer Hall, What kind of disturbance should we expect?" *FZZZT* "Well, shit."

Rebekah regretted not changing the batteries on her radio, but when the hell was she supposed to find the time for that? She looked out at the park, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. "Let's see, small children playing hopscotch, a few college kids having a Frisbee tourney, a large group of stumbling drunks-oh wait that isn't normal for a Wednesday" Rebekah strides quickly over towards the group, but stops short a few feet away as one breaks away from the group and makes a beeline for her. "hey now, can we maybe not start a brawl at like, lunchtime? Please?" She ducks as the man charges, hitting him with her baton as he passes. She steps back, hoping this guy will get the hint and move on but the man just turns and charges again. she aims her baton at his kneecaps on his next pass, hoping to stall him. She backs up and sprints to the Frisbee group. "Okay guys, sorry to interrupt your game but we have a bit of a situation, can you gentlemen help me get everyone in the park to Gus' diner and LOCK THE DOORS okay thanks!"
Beka gives the guys a thumbs up as she takes off running towards the north end of the park, making sure to try and bait the shambling group into following. If only she could find a change of clothes....

10:00 PM, Coast City Police Department, back alley

Rebekah glanced left and right, making sure no one saw her step behind the police building. Why the hell we don't have cameras back here is beyond me, our tax dollars at work I guess, Rebekah chuckles darkly. She had just finished up her shift for the day, leaving behind a bag of pastries and a fresh pot of coffee for the night shift. Reaching into her duffel bag she pulled out a faded red hoodie and a set of bdu pants and sets to work changing, watching her surroundings all the while.

Always the same routine. Work during the day, more work at night. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. The routine was exhausting but Rebekah knew the streets were already a bit safer with her watching them. Slipping on the hoodie, she releases a breath and pictures the form of her wings; large and brown, no longer hidden by the belt she wore always. They slip out from between her shoulder blades, past the hole she cut out of the back of her hoodie and stretch to their full length behind her. Rebekah stretches and removes a white paper bag from her duffel before stashing it behind the alley dumpster. Smiling, she recalls the little girl who gave the bag of sweets to her earlier in the day.

"Officer Beka! Wait for me!"
"Mama says I needta thank you for finding my doggie Sam, so here! They are gummy worms cause those are my favorite!"

Lucy had requested very tearfully earlier in the week that Rebekah should find her dog, and if there's one thing a beat cop is good for, it's finding lost dogs. What she wasn't prepared for though, was that this "Sam" turned out to be a freaking Great Dane the size of a small horse.

How anyone loses a dog that size I will never know

The dog had been happy to return with her after some coaxing out of the park with half a sub sandwich, and the little girls offer of sweets was very appealing to Rebekah's raging sweet tooth. The rest of her shift had gone by as usual. Helping people across busy streets, writing fines for litterers in the park, chasing off the group of schoolkids who hung out in front of the liquor store. The life of a street officer was pretty mundane, it seemed. Only the smiles and waves of the regular faces of the neighborhood seemed to cut through the drudgery of the day. Just gotta make it through your shift, Bex. Then the real work begins

Stuffing two of the brightly colored worms into her mouth, Rebekah places the bag into her pocket and beats her wings HARD. She rises over the roof of the building and hovers, listening to the sounds of her city at night. Searching for the first sign of trouble. Off in the distance she hears a sharp sound, like glass breaking. She notes the direction, south east of herself, takes a breath and takes off. It only takes a few minutes to arrive on the scene, a small storefront with a shattered windowpane. She can hear the movement of at least one person inside but Rebekah knows better than to run into a B&E blind. She perches on the roof, drawing her baton and awaits the burgaler's reappearance. After a few minutes, two men step out of the storefront with sacks of stolen goods slung over their shoulders and make their way to the car parked across the street. Easy prey, never gonna know what hit them, Rebekah mutters and descends swiftly towards the would be robbers. She lands with her boots in one of the men's backs, knocking him to the ground with force; and knocks the other in the back of his head with her baton. He cries out and turns, swinging blindly at his assailant. Bekah sidesteps him and knocks him once more, watching the man crumple to the ground. Bekah crouches down to check the man's pulse and upon confirming his unconsciousness she grabs the sack of goods he dropped. Walking to the other man she grabs his as well and places both back through the window of the shop. Swiftly, Bekah returns to the two thugs and grabs them by their jackets. She beats her wings again, harder now due to the extra weight, and heads back into the sky towards the station. When she reaches it she unceremoniously drops them both onto the pavement with a note in the front pocket of the big guy's jacket. She knocks on the glass of the front doors and turns, lifting off into the night as an officer steps out and looks around before turning their attentions to the men. She pulls the note out of the pocket and reads:

tHESE MEN ROBBED A STOREFRONT, 2106 BROAD.
THEY WILL KNOW BETTER THAN TO DO IT AGAIN.

6:00 AM, Coast City Police Department

*SLAM*

The sound of boots hitting the floor rings out through the empty changing room. Another night of patrolling over...at least I got some action this time. Those muggers will think twice about trying their luck on my block again, hopefully. She stashes her dufflebag in her locker, shuffling some books around to conceal the red hoodie and camo pants within. don't want another round of twenty questions from the others, last time I was sure green thought I was some kinda prostitute She remembers having to field a litany of questions from the bubbly new officer who shared the locker next to hers.

"whatcha got there, Beks?"
"ooh clothes? you going on a date?"
"why is your hoodie all slashed up?"
"what do you mean you bought it like that"
"you really thnk this is fashion?'
"where can i get one too?"

Pushing all thoughts of the annoying new recruit aside, Rebekah closes her locker, forcefully enough to jam the door shut tight. Rebekah sighs and catches sight of herself in the mirror of the changing room. She regards her reflection, turning left and right slightly to make sure her uniform is proper and clean before a tired voice from behind her startles her out of her thoughts. "Oh good, the morning shift is here. Get the lead out of those boots and hit the beat so I can go home, night shifts are soulless and I just want to sleep." Beka turns on her heel to face the source of this sass to find Officer Lewis, still yawning as he removes his hat and winks at her. "You know, you could have gotten that fancy detective job with flexible hours if you had only volunteered to help canvass the area for that kid who's been turning over ATMs. If I recall correctly, Lewis, you were napping during the briefing from the Chief!" Rebekah pats him consolingly on the shoulder and she moves for the exit.

She can hear him grumbling to himself about rookies and their place as she strides through the empty hallway towards the front doors, chiding herself internally for being rude. She will apologize later, she always does, leaving a fresh pot of coffee and a bag of pastries from the bakery on the block in the lounge. Hand on the door, Rebekah pauses and takes a deep breath. Her mother once told her that being an officer was the best way to help the community. Stepping through the doors into the sunlight, Rebekah knows its still not enough. She has to do more.

Biography---------

Character History/Origin:

Beka was born in Cairo and raised there with her mother until she was ten years old. her mother Leila was a member of the Egyptian police force, and was fairly strict with Beka, enforcing a curfew and a tight study schedule. Studious and stubborn, Beka breezed through her schoolwork and would then use her free time to explore. She often found herself climbing to the tallest spires of churches and mosques to watch the daily goings on of the city. This resulted in scolding and punishment from her mother, who made quite an effort to keep her grounded. Beka was home tutored, not really getting much socialization from other kids her age; choosing instead to spend her time hanging around her next door neighbors pigeon coop. Three days before her tenth birthday, Beka's mother gave her a gift wrapped in gold paper. Inside were her mothers Silver belt and Baton, which Leila was never seen without. Beka was told that she would need to keep them with her always as they would protect her from harm. That night Leila went out on routine patrol and was never heard from again. She had left a note at the station, saying simply that she "must return home" and leaving contact information for Beka's father John.

Beka was flown to California and dropped into the care of her father and his wife and family. john was not very happy at the new addition to his family, taking very little part in the care of his daughter, and his wife was not much better. Beka finds out during puberty that once she takes her belt off at night she begun to develop wings, disappearing again once the belt was on. Beka immediately realized she had ZERO time for that, and begun wearing the belt constantly, realizing its form seemed to shift with her outfit. Beka was often overlooked or straight up ignored during the daily routine, and she spent her teenage years in and out of trouble with her parents for fighting and sneaking out. Her father enrolled her in a military education school in hopes of "instilling some discipline" into her, and the physical training and strict routine helped to get her mind back on track. the belt stayed with her, keeping her "secret" from the world. She decided to enlist after graduation, and completed two tours of duty with the Army. After retiring due to a minor injury, Beka remembered how much good her mother did as an officer and decided to follow in the same footsteps. She enrolled in the police academy immediately, hoping to feel closer to her mother. She currently spends her nights Vigilanting, trying to do as much good with her powers as she can with her badge.

You better be safe. Keep out of sight.
Peeking at her phone, Wren sighed heavily. What could possibly be happening in the world that was more important than Mr. Hendriks' Marine anatomy midterm? Wren scrolls to the news app, reading quickly about another bank robbery. groan Wren sighs again, long and drawn out. She really wished her aunt would stop worrying. I mean, she has a copy of Wren's class schedule in the apartment. It's not like she was ditching classes. She worked too hard picking pockets for this class, she wasn't going to waste-
Miss Monroe, you are well aware of my rules regarding phones, yes? Then you do know what being on your phone means. You may leave, you have one chance to make up this grave mistake during my office hours. I suggest you refrain from cheating in the future.
Dammit. there goes a whole days work. Guess i will head to this shitshow, see what's the deal. Grabbing her satchel, Wren slinks out of her class and takes the steps two at a time to the first floor. Stepping out the front door she makes a beeline for the bike rack.

Wonderland was almost empty for the moment, with a few early birds settling in for their first rounds. There is a single man at the counter, seemingly unmoved by the comings and goings of the patrons. Another one to drown his sorrows, Alice muses as she moves to take his glass. It isn't unusual for a man or two to be in the bar, although considering the very female clientele they were few and far between. She remembers seeing this particular man before and the bar is slow, so she decides he means no harm. Alice deftly mixes a fruity drink for a girl down the counter and then starts on the empty glass for her melancholy customer. "You are starting to become a regular, ya know?" She moves to the whiskey shelf, pausing to check her selections before grabbing a bottle of Makers Mark. " Remember, be nice to the girls and if you aren't getting a cab you can rent a room upstairs." She slides the glass of whiskey back to her patron. She leaves him the bottle and goes to wipe down the tables before the impending rush, casually glancing at the small tv in the upper corner of the bar. Its muted but seems to be showing news coverage of a bank heist. Alice returns to the counter and grabs her cellphone.
