Lyra walked down the cold, cobblestone street, wearing thin shoes of leather that allowed her to move as silently as possible, a necessity for where she was headed. The crisp air of the autumn night nipped at her button nose and caused her soft, grey eyes to well slightly with tears. Her long, dark hair was tied back in a single braid, and the night breeze caused the few small pieces that fell loose around her pale face to sway.
The thick black cloak she was adorned in billowed behind her with the wind, revealing underneath a simple outfit of a white, peasant-style, long sleeve shirt, and black trousers, held up by black leather suspenders. She wore two black leather harnesses; one across her chest and one across her hips. The chest harness held an assortment of things; wooden stakes, daggers with blades of silver, silver crosses. The hip harness held one thing; a sheathed sword, with a long, lethal blade of silver. It wasn’t the typical choice of clothing for a normal villager lady, but, she was far from normal, anyway.
The cold stones of the streets in this small French village pressed against her feet as she walked, the sensation sending a chill up her spine. She toyed with a wooden, beaded rosary as she approached the cathedral; the vast, dark, wooden doors lit by two torches on either side. As quietly as possible, she pulled a torch from its procurement on the stone wall, then pushed open the heavy door, cursing that it groaned in protest as she did so.
Inside the cathedral, she walked hastily down the aisle, right to the bottom of the 4 small steps to the altar, where behind it a podium stood in front of a large, wooden cross, draped in the white cloth and thorny crown the Savior had so diligently worn at his time of crucification.
Lyra ascended the few wooden steps, then dropped to her knees at the altar, clasping her hands over the cross at the end of the rosary and bowing her head in prayer, the beads swaying slightly back and forth as she did.
Completely immersed, she prayed to her God; for safety, for courage and for luck, for she would need these things on her hunt tonight.
