Prologue:
This RP is based slightly on an old rpg, Shadowrun. This RP, however, is set at a much earlier date. Hence no cyberpunk cyborgs, deckers, etc. No megacorps either really. There are going to be some FANTASY elements in the story, but these will be introduced as things unfold.
Setting
The Earth has never been in worse condition. The Doomsday Clock has been set at 1 minute to Midnight. Weather in the North Hemisphere is worse than every: savage winters, tornado and hurricane seasons with ever increasing destructive power, Increased tectonic activity. Road conditions around the globe are getting worse every year as it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain them. Weather damage is destroying crops and shortening seasons.
You get the picture.
The impact? Unemployment is at an all time high as industries automate. The larger metro areas are beginning to resemble India with its homeless situation. Squatting is out of control. Martial law has been declared in the USA since 2028. America is a military police state.
Food prices are out of control. Rationing is in effect. Citizens now require biochips that control their banking, ID, licensing - everything. (NO, these chips can’t be used to track. They are too small to have a power source strong enough. But they can be scanned if you walk close enough to a scanner.) Cash is illegal. Private gardening is illegal. Cats and dogs are now the other white meat in the USA. Rats may be a substitute. Fossil fuel costs are so high that most can’t afford it. Newer hybrids are the only vehicles anyone can afford to drive. Most people can’t afford one. (Most people use either mass transit or Ubers.)
Of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone. The rich are richer than ever (those who haven’t been ruined by economic collapses).
Privacy. That is a thing of the past. Social media is now heavily monitored. The government now has “legal” access to your financial and medical data. They can read your email.
Conscription. Poverty conscription is now in effect. Most adults between the age of 18 and 26 are forced into military service. This does NOT mean combat. Combat is typically for volunteers. Most of these young members of the military do manual labor working with the Corp of Engineers. In truth this is a new version of the TVA. Older people can apply as Reservists and often do in exchange for food and shelter.
At the start of the RP martial law will have been in force for 10 years.

I am looking for basically good people for the sake of a group. These will be people struggling to live off the grid. The usual drab mundane characters made for Modern RP’s won’t work here - not after 10 years of martial law. You will need to figure out how your character has lived. This will be easier with older characters who had lives before the military state. Younger characters will probably have had to live like survivalists.
Do you live in a big city? Are you a migrant worker? Are you one of those people that has moved into wilderness zones like Montana to get away from all that and get back to nature?

The Background Drama
On Jun 18, 2038 a second moon appeared in sun synchronous orbit over the Earth. It was roughly cylindrical, 500 miles long and 127 miles across. It had an orbital period of 3 hours and an altitude of 2603 miles. It rotated with respect to the Sun every 24 hours. It was easily visible from the ground as a man made object. It had an overall sapphire hue and sparkled almost like a gem. But even a simple telescope or strong pair of binoculars could pick up the geodesic domes that covered its surface, each about 10 miles across. Many were opaque and blacked like ebony. Others appeared to be agricultural habitats.
Its total mass wasn’t enough to have a major impact on the Earth. It was assumed that the “moon” was at least partially hollow. At the very least it was clearly artificial and not of this Earth.
The arrival of the object created panic across the globe as one might imagine. Conspiracy theory nuts got to work immediately. Nations began to discuss the object while secretly discussing the own plans. Most were sure of a few basic facts. No nation on Earth could have built the thing. Any nation that got its hands on the technology first would have a step up in the race to colonize space. If the object was occupied Earth would be helpless to resist an invasion.
Various space agencies began to discuss joint missions to explore the object. Military black ops planned according to their own agendas.
Meanwhile back on Earth:

The Secret
The Object will not remain silent forever. It is observing Earth. Soon it will expand its coverage by launching 24 remote probes each about 1/4 mile in diameter to assume geostationary orbits. Finally, it will launch 960 hypersonic reentry vehicles. Some of the landing sites will begin to show a pattern: Chernobyl, Fukushima, Nevada desert, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Antarctica. But some of the landing sites won’t make any sense at all by this pattern: Dolphin Key, Montana a little north of Butte, various recycling plants. Or perhaps they do make a little sense. Most of the sites are ecological disasters or solutions.
Of course, militaries will scramble anything they think can shoot down the “attack.” But the reentry vehicles will vanish for a time before reappearing near their intended targets.
Finally the Earth will be subjected to a massive hack of computers around the globe. Anything connected will get hacked. At the end of the hack a single message will be broadcast in the local language of every nation on Earth.

Note: You can create more than one character. But one main character should be a single male in his late 20’s to mid 30’s. Unless he is a prodigy, he probably wouldn’t be an astronaut. The age range is 26 to 46, with 34 being average. But below 30 or over 40 is rare.
Who are you? Will you be one of the astronauts who attempts to board the Object? (As the domes appear to be of a botanical nature, a botanist would be a good idea. It is also easier to be younger as a mission specialist.) Or perhaps you will try to investigate the Landings - either as government, reporter, civilian scientist. (Please no whack jobs. Let’s stick with serious characters.) Obviously the government will be trying to crack down. If caught you’ll be held under national security conditions.
My Character
My character is an extremely popular author of fantasy novels, many which have been turned into movies. She lives just a little southwest of Anaconda, MT (close to the MT landing site). She also authored and did the artwork for a comic named Junkyard Jane that was later picked up by Marvel and also turned into a movie. She used her own face for the character. Some of the proceeds went into building a recycling empire. So the location might not be so strange after all. Her home is literally a mansion built like a European castle designed not to clash with the setting. She was one of the richest people on the planet. In recent years the place has fallen into ruin as martial law made living there unbearable. Her assets were seized when she didn’t turn herself in. Why?

Brief Synopsis: This is an altered timeline with the current events set somewhere between 1870 and 1914. The location centers around Zealandia (Realm of New Zealand). In this history, a caucasian God King has lived among the Maori and prevented Europeans from despoiling their culture. The plot unfolds as New Zealand once more opens three ports to foreigners.
Now the most influential nations of the world seek to establish a diplomatic foothold by way of romance. Please note: He is not actually a god. In fact he doesn't really care for the title. It is NOT necessary for you to be a history expert. Most of what you need about New Zealand is in this description. But it wouldn't hurt to research your own character a little. Bear in mind the subtle changes due to the variations of history below.

By the time the first Europeans arrived, Māori had settled the land, every corner of which came within the interest and influence of a tribal (iwi) or sub-tribal (hapū) grouping. Abel Tasman was the first of the European explorers known to have reached New Zealand, in December 1642. His time here was brief. His only encounter with Māori ended badly, with four of his crew killed and Māori fired upon in retaliation. Tasman named the place we now call Golden Bay ‘Moordenaers’ (Murderers’) Bay. After he left in early January 1643, Tasman’s New Zealand became a ragged line on the world map. The Māori response to this visit is less well-known, except for fragments of stories recorded in the 19th century.
It would be 127 years before the next recorded encounter between European and Māori. The British explorer James Cook arrived in Poverty Bay in October 1769. His voyage to the south Pacific was primarily a scientific expedition, but the British were not averse to expanding trade and empire. The French were not far behind. As Cook rounded the top of the North Island in December 1769, the French explorer Jean François Marie de Surville was only 40 km to the south-west. New Zealand’s isolation was at an end.
This time Europeans were to be met under the graces of the God King himself. Both Cook and Surville received letters addressed to them personally in their respective languages. The messages set a specific meeting in 1771 in the Bay of Islands at Waitangi. The letter includes an incredibly accurate map of New Zealand’s coastline. Specific instructions were given as to the protocol’s to be respected - with warnings that both nations would be arriving. Stern warnings were given that hostilities would be met with strong repercussions. The letter laid claim to territorial waters (12 nm), a contiguous zone (an additional 12 nm), and an exclusive economic zone (200 nm) and finally mineral rights of the entire continental shelf. He also laid claim to a number of uncharted territories as holding a protectorate status.
In the 1771 meeting the British and French got a little heated with one another. The God King told the both to stop or either one or both would be thrown off the island and not be allowed to approach Zealandia for 100 years. Both nations tried to lease land in much the way Hong Kong was formed. They were turned own flatly. Rather they would be allowed specific ports to weigh anchor in. Docks would be built suitable for their ships. Visitors would receive a dated document called an MW Pass. It was essentially a VISA. A few long term visitors would likewise be allowed. Foreign churches were forbidden.

Te Ara’s family retaliated and attacked. This was complicated by the fact that another tribe, Te Pahi arrived and was shocked at the attack on the Europeans and tried to save them. The situation escalated into a civil war.
The God King stepped in the ordered all foreigners to leave New Zealand. He shut the trade ports down, much to the displeasure of his own people. But according to rumors that did not stop the musket wars that continued for the next 30 years. He warned that he would continue to guard his territory. But internal matters were … internal and not the faul of foreigners. Once matters in New Zealand were resolved and a time of peace had passed he would again open diplomatic channels.

That is the Magna Carta was a much weaker document. The final form wasn’t written until 1688 when it was finally confirmed as part of England’s statute law. This has slowed the process of the evolution of democracy and made it a far more radical idea. Slavery has yet to be abolished even in England, though there is considerable pressure for this to happen as of 1870. However Abolition will likely take place by 1914. (1870 to 1914 is often referred to as the Second Industrial Revolution.)

He is a recluse who seems to shun interaction with others. And yet the few times he has been encountered he demonstrated civilized behavior.
The truth? He is the same man. His true age is unknown even to the Maori. It is no small wonder that they fear him as a god. And he has made good on threats of sinking ships by unknown means those who dared to bring violence against protectorates.
Is he some sort of Methuselah? Or maybe Cain? Perhaps he is Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced Christ’s heart? Or Cartaphilus aka Ahasver the Wandering Jew who taunted Christ.
Plot
Most of the world could care less about New Zealand. However, Britain, France, Germany and the USA will take an interest. The first three will begin to consider romantic methods of diplomacy - by sealing ties with a marriage. America may try much the same, sending daughter of rich families to form some sort of dynasty.
If a later date is chosen - late 1890’s and beyond - then other nations may seek to establish a military treaty there. But please do a little research if you choose a nation other than these and make sure they have any reason to have an interest. I do recommend sticking to Europe or America though.
As the God King (he actually hates the title) is hard to track down unless he wants to be found, the first part of the RP will be meeting with the Maori and trying to convey to them your desire to meet him. Better have a good reason that they would bother him with.
If American you could be anything really. You might go the Tarzan route and be the daughter of an cultural specialist there more for research. It is extremely difficult to get an MW pass to leave the port area and to inland. Even if you are foreign royalty you would HAVE to have a diplomatic escort.
Before anyone asks: No, the God King isn't interested in Arranged marriages. That doesn't mean you couldn't be sent. But of your parents tried to make arrangements, they would have fallen on deaf ears. It is unlikely the letters would even get delivered. The Maori aren't exactly cooperative.

The alteration of the Magna Carta and the strength of the British monarchy is partly the fault of the God King. For a time he venture into the world and visited Europe under another name. He was there during the time of Camelot, for example.

The letter laid claim to territorial waters (12 nm), a contiguous zone (an additional 12 nm), and an exclusive economic zone (200 nm) and finally mineral rights of the entire continental shelf. He also laid claim to a number of uncharted territories as holding a protectorate status.

Okay ... I have renewed the Recruitment thread and tagged it Casual (High) to Advanced. I also referred people to look at Vrani's characters for an idea what we are looking for. One really should be a practicing wiccan .... although ... that can be worked around. But she would still need to be the coven's founder.

Yes, this is a fandom, albeit with original characters set at Model High School in Rome, GA. A small coven of three witches starting their senior year set their sites on the new girl (my character) with designs of inviting her into the coven.
Each one has their own reason for practicing magic. You do not need to duplicate the original film. Besides, the idea is for this RP to be open ended, not turn into a self destructive fight. One of the keys to the coven gathering real power will be trust. My character is going to be very slow to trust except on a very shallow level. She has multiple secrets. Each of your characters could do the same.
This is intended as a small group. Any additional members will need the unanimous approval of the coven members. So submit any characters to all 4. Please understand that they may wish to keep the group small to avoid disruption.

Removed the 18+. Not sure why it was tagged that way as these are high schoolers. But there are some mature themes in the backgrounds as some characters come from lives of abuse and victims of criminals. Also, the plots could turn dark if people start summoning bad stuff.
