The Republic of Paraka

Vashaqamak: "The Capital of the Republic"

The city of Vashaqamak tells many stories ever since the first stone was laid by the Parakans. The tall buildings, the temperate climate and the incesant sounds of civilization, locomotives, factories and music. For if one was to summarize Vashaqamak in a couple words those would be the ones they would use.

The history of the city began when the first founders of the Republic, revolutionary general and first president of the Republic Kayutar realized that in order to build a new and strong nation that could stand against the Euranians on the same ground, the republic needed for a new capital that would show the values fo the new republic. A city of strength and of freedom. For that very reason, Kayutar gave those who had supported land in what would become the new city, as well, as his soldiers who became the first settlers of the city.

One could say that the city begins and ends with the central plaza, a very large plaza where many of the iconic government buildings are to be found, from the presidential palace to the ministry of finance and the ministry of defense, and at the very center of the plaza a tall statue of a man and a woman extending their arms to the sky, a clear symbol that the Parakans embraced their future with hope and freedom, for we are all the same under the sky.

The city follows a mix of Etelian and local style of buildings, for many in the first years of the Republic, the cities of Etelie were seen as a good example as to how a city was to be structured and made, with wide roads and wide sidewalks. Tall and wide buildings made with strong materials that served to give the buildings their own personality even if some of them weren't exactly all that practical. Nonetheles, one can not deny that the early choices for the construction of the republican capital have had a great influence on the contemporary arquitectural movements of Paraka.

The Ramaray river is also another geographical feature of the city, this navigable river ends up on the eastern coast of the Republic and has served the capital industrial growth well, allowing for the relatively cheap transport of goods to the sea. Another feature of the city,a lthough, less notable is the use of trams and a subway system within the city that help with the transport of people, between the many districts and from one side of the river to the other in a rather fast way.

Another thing to be said about the city regards its inhabitants, who have taken pride in living on the capital of the Republic ever since its inception (not to forget that the first settlers were soldiers), many of them living on the oldest of houses that have been well maintained and sometimes even become museums if the need arises. Many industrialists and successful bussinessmen have also taken residence within the center of the city, often buying entire blocks to house their newly built mansions that also work as their company's headquarters. Albeit some of them have start to move to more isolated places, where they can run their bussiness on a more peaceful manner.

The entrepenurial spirit of the modern Paraka seems to have also originated from the capital, where many companies that today are considered behemoths such as COMAY had their begginings on the capital were they competition was little everywhere and continues to be to today, for if a man wants to sell something he will have to take into account thousands of entrepeneurs who would sell the same cheaper and better. For that very same reason, there have been come cases were two companies hired tugs to sabotage other company and if often ended in a rather ugly brawl if both companies had done the same. In some rarer cases, government officials were hired to make "mistakes" that would rise the tax rate of a certain company or even make a company pay a fine it didn't had to.

Meanwhile, some workers dream of becoming like those men with their nice suits and wallets made out of exotic Serranthian leather, those men are the men that sometimes manage to beat their previous bosses in their own game and build from the ground up new companies that only expand and expand, in one of the most competitive markets in the world.

The government most of the time has to handle these large companies and make sure they are supervised to a certain extent and that they do follow the law, even if not sometimes that same law allows them to do certain things that some would think are wrong. In conclusion, in Vashaqamak one can find of everything, from the early hopeful past of the republic to the current rapid industrial advancement of the nation, that doesn't let a man take a breath if he doesn't want to lose on the grand game of bussiness that almost everyone is playing.

Presidential Palace-Vashaqamak

The concepts of freedom and liberty, as well as self-determination, were core concepts for the people of Paraka who had once freed themselves from the Euranian boot to rise to great power status, however, even if its home continent remained free the question of wether this freedom and liberty that had been achieved should be promoted to the far less fortunate continents such as Serranthia, where while quite not in the hands of the Euranian powers, it had seen their advance to conquer and establish permanent administrations of territories that were once free.

Most of the debate had remained a theory and the Republic of Paraka had never established a presence of land not of its own, as such, the situation where a Serranthian rebel leader had asked for a conference and invited the Parakan nation was all too new and strange for the Parakan people, thus it was something that would set a precedent for years to come in the Parakan foreign policy. For the government and many knowledgeable people on the subject, the context and implications of Paraka attending the said conference were rather clear.

Relations with the Toubres empire would certainly decrease, as it would be seen by them as giving legimaticy to what they considered to be nothing more than a barbarian rebel, also from the news that had arrived at Paraka it seemed that it was indeed a struggle for freedom as the rebel leader had attacked a military fort rather than a civilian village, as well, as calling up the great powers to intervene on their behalf.

Meanwhile, the president of Paraka in his office reviewed the possibility of sending a delegate to said conference, the president and his cabinet could be said that it was divided or the issue, but if they were to send someone their position would be that of appeasement, as there was really no political will to enforce anything on another continent. If Paraka was to send someone it wouldn't be to promote a hardline stance but to keep a political balance and to ensure that the Tehme people at least hand who really wanted to back them up.

After a long afternoon, president Armaq Talaqo decided to announce that the Republic of Paraka would attend to the conference to "promote peace on Serranthia and ensure a fair settlement to the current crisis"

The Armaq Talaqo Presidency of 1904-1909

The elections of 1904 saw the Sovereign Freedom Party end up victorious and have their candidate, current president Armaqa Talaqo, elected, while the two other major parties the Populists and the Liberal League of citizens had to be satisfied with their respective share of seats at Congress with SFP holding the majority in that regard.

So on October 10th while the presidential ceremony ended, the militants of the party happily celebrated their victory and were ready to embrace what awaited them in the near future. It must be said that the SFP had a main core ideology of a rather low government involvement within the affairs of the nation, as such, they made sure that the provincial governors would have plenty of freedom and not be exactly tied by a leash to the central government, for within their agenda they had plans to make more efficient the making of public works and improve bureacracy while also reducing corruption, which was seen as many as a waste of taxes.

On political and social grounds the SFP could be considered Liberal conservative, as such it was no wonder that the most of voters of the SFP had won came from the eastern and central regions, which had seen a rise on liberal stances while maintaining the typical Parakan core of liberty in most affairs.

The international approach of SFP would be same as it had been a couple of decades ago that of no military intervention and to promote by non-aggressive means the values of the great nation of Paraka.

That was pretty much the overview of the state of affairs of the SFP and their agenda, however, it was up to the president to decide if he was going remain fully faithful to such even at the expense of political gain, for he prioritized his duty to the citizens of Paraka than to keeping himself at office.

The cabinet of Armaq Talaqo was the following:

Minister of Defence: Ameyalli Coeget
Minister of Finance: Antinanco Rutiy (New One replaced Harasay Irmaqe)
Minister of the Interior: Metzli Anta
Minister of Foreign Affairs: Tlatoq Cylin
Minister of Education: Kunturay Wayka

Minister of Justice: Wareiwa PoƱara

The Corruption Persecution of 1905

The Sovereign Freedom Party had won the elections of 1904 with a rather large margin of voters surpassing both the Populists and the Liberal League of Citizens with promises of a better government for the people, to help the development of the country without heavy government involvement. Such was the political platform of Armaq who fought tooth and nail for every vote he had won in the elections. Armaq Talaqo had been born as the son of a plantation owner in the west and had steadily risen in a political career after he saw a case of corruption within his town after the major choose to contract a rather peculiar company over the more trusted local construction company, by the way, they spoke it was clear that they were old friends doing favors.

The major was indeed sued for corruption later on, but the trial was long and the punishment not really of the scale of his misdoing. Thus wishing to put an end to such acts Armaq Talaqo proceeded to seek and persecute cases of corruption within the government, he often called them "Thieving bastards" to all those who would take the money of the people for their own ends.

Many saw this as the start of the government having a firmer hand against corporations and trusts in the country, however, the real results of this new approach was yet to be seen and thus the competitiveness of the president and his new cabinet was at risk of being ridiculed and put to shame, or if they were successful being looked upon as bringers of justice to the country.

President Armaq Talaqo thus prepared for a very busy year as he sought to tackle many big issues within the country.

The Grey Chromium Act of 1905

The lands of the republic while rich in resources had yet to develop to their full capacity, the president wishing to smooth the scarcity of said resource decided to pass an act to make it easier for companies to receive land grants in places where chromium had been found, of course, this was to be closely reviewed by government officials in order to avoid the abuse of this act, needless to say, the act also stipulated that if people were living in the land, the company would have to fullfill a reparation that would cover moving costs among other things for the people living there, this was done in hopes of the companies avoiding to intrude in agricultural land or more urban locations.

It is of note that the industries that used the most of said resources were the newly not so thriving arms industry which was severely lacking in comparison to other industries within the country and to that of the world being severely behind that of countries such as Julia and other Euranian nations.

Shooting Tournaments around the country.

The administration of the Sovereign Freedom party had always been as conservative and isolationist, however, that policy of isolationism didn't mean that the country shouldn't have a strong army or navy, even though these were only to be considered as tools of the government for the protection of the rights and freedoms of its citizens, at least, that was the posture of the SFP and it seemed like it would take a while for the army and navy to get to par with their peers in Eurania.

The first step of the party members was to promote shooting seasonal shooting tournaments within the country in the hopes of attracting more volunteers to the army and to also make the public more familiar with modern weaponry, of course, this needed cooperation with the small arms industry of the country, for this reason, the minister of defense saw it opportune to meet with several of the leading companies both private and state ones, to speak about sponsoring said tournaments. The meeting would take at the capital and depend on how it went, the tournaments may have seen more sponsorship and better prizes.
