I actually did a few research papers on these post-colonial conflicts back in college, so this is definitely right up my alley. I'm thinking I might play as a Blue Helmet, back when U Thant was actually using the UN as a force for good.

Good question. This unpleasantness is fairly recent- John only took power about six months back, and Robin Hood fled to Sherwood Forest about a month ago. They're not yet recognized as a serious threat. John has a very long to-do list and the Merry Men are currently pretty low on it.

The Merry Men of Sherwood (Always Open!)

It is a time of hardship and oppression in Merry England. The just King Richard is held hostage in Austria, and in his stead rules his brother, Prince John. The regent has usurped the throne and delights in his excesses of power- raising taxes to line his own coffers and those of his cronies, jailing those who might disagree and revoking the titles of nobles who feel any obligation to the common people. Misery and darkness rules over the land.

In Nottingham, the situation is especially dire. The Sheriff of Nottingham is especially talented at squeezing the locals dry, leaving them hardly enough money to survive. The minor noble Robert of Loxley has just returned from fighting in the Holy Land, only to find his title and lands stolen away and given to Prince John's crony the Sheriff. Incensed at the theft and the harsh treatment of his subjects, he has gathered several like-minded yeomen to him and taken to Sherwood Forest, there to plot how best to relieve the suffering poor and return the rightful king to the throne- all the while evading the Sheriff and his men.

This is your story.

Robin Hood! The name evokes the hiss of arrows, manly laughter, tales of daring and courage. In this RP you will play as one of the Merry Men, Robin's handpicked band of followers. You're free to use one of the standard characters of legend, such as Friar Tuck, Maid Marian, or Alan-a-Dale; or you can make an entirely new character to rob from the rich and give to the poor. Many things might lead someone to join up, perhaps you were a criminal already or maybe you are a little more high-minded.

This is NOT based on any particular book, movie, or television show, this is only intended to be a broad retelling of the Robin Hood mythos.

Additionally, this RP will have an episodic format. We will focus on one caper or adventure at a time, referred to here as ballads. Therefore, it's easy for someone to drop out briefly or a new character to be introduced- just wait for the next ballad to start.

CS Template

Name: What do the other Merry Men call you? Might be a real name, a nickname, a title, an alias, a sobriquet, anything.

Age: Your character's age.

Gender: Your gender. Be advised, a woman in Medieval Britain might not have the same freedoms or training that a man might, so your backstory may need to reflect this.

Appearance: Photograph or detailed description is acceptable. No drawings, no animation.

Weapon of Choice: The stories make a big deal out of what weapon each character used- for instance, Robin had his bow, Little John his quarterstaff, and so on. Ideally, it should fit their personality.

Background: A paragraph or two about your life and what led you to join with the Merry Men.

As many people as I can. I'm not limiting myself to men, but it's an era where it'd be extremely difficult for women to gain the respect or acceptance of such a group. There's always Maid Marian, of course. As far as age, no limit.

However, England is not without hope. There are still brave men who stand against the rising tide of injustice, and one of them is an outlawed lord named Robert of Loxley- better known as Robin Hood. Hiding in Sherwood Forest with his handpicked band of rogues, the Merry Men, he fights a daring war against injustice throughout Nottingham. Robbing from the corrupt followers of Prince John, he gives some of the money to the needy and saves the rest to put towards Richard's ransom.

Really, you know the story.

What I'd like to do is retell the legend of Robin Hood, with a little more focus on the Merry Men, who will be played by you guys. You can pick traditional characters like Will Scarlett or Much the Miller's Son, newer ones like the Saracen, or even a wholly original character. This is NOT related to any existing TV show or movie, nor am I terribly concerned about historical accuracy. Just fun tales of derring-do.

Worried you won't be able to commit to regular play? Fear not, this will be an episodic RP. Each adventure, called ballads here, will be a fairly self-contained story (though I do want to do some arc plots). If you have to duck out for whatever reason, you're free to return for the next ballad.
