Nate realized his generosity had cost him half the pint of whiskey in less than a minute. He sighed, carefully replaced the lid, and slipped it back into his pocket. "Yeah, I'm Nate," he replied distractedly, looking around the room. He waved to the guy in the corner- Isaac, was it?- motioning for him to come on over. Might as well be friendly.

"I think this might really be all there is to it, guys," he said quietly. "I don't want to sound mean, but I'm not sure Cara has that much imagination." He sighed, gestured for the vodka. "Let me get a hit of that, then we're even." For this moment, at least, this one shining moment, Nate was one of the cool kids. He had always wondered what it felt like. Might as well enjoy it.

"Does anyone really know anything about her? Like, anything at all? Where she's from, what she does for fun, shoe size, anything?"
Enh, it might be better to RP about an original story, not an adaption of something, for two reasons. One, not everyone might be familiar with the source material, and two, it's way too easy for those that are to just start arguing about interpretation and what should and shouldn't be in the movie, rather than just playing the game.
Vesuvius would be good. Volcanic eruptions are often accompanied by tsunami and earthquake. If people don't want to play Italians, then the United States Navy has based the Sixth Fleet in Naples, the main city threatened by the volcano. I'm sure American sailors would play a major role in evacuation/ disaster response efforts in such an event.
"So, yeah, how much longer do you think it's gonna be, Captain?" Alex Culver asked a clearly irritated Marine corporal. "Cause, you know, we're playing Nashville this coming Friday night. I didn't mind missing the last few games, but I really hate those saber-toothed dorks. Oilers, Stars, Blues, none of them bug me that much, but the Predators really have it out for me. I remember their guy Aune really got me good a couple seasons back. That's how this happened, right?" Culver grinned at the silent and unresponsive Marine, pointing at a clearly visible chip in his incisor. "Got him back real good, though. It was worth the penalty. But they've been after me ever since. Do you want my autograph? Hey, where you going?" he called after the Marine as the man walked away.

Alex sighed. The time had been dragging on since all practice and games had been cancelled and the team evacuated. He had packed a couple bags and made his way to Camp Pendleton, instead of flying out like most of the rest of the teams. He had spent most of his childhood on one military base or another, they just felt right to him. And Alex figured he might as well be with his fans.

But seriously, two weeks? This was getting ridiculous. There had been some looting, he was a little worried about his condo on the 22nd floor of a trendy downtown building. A bunch of his stuff would probably fetch a high price online if people knew it belonged to the great Alex Culver of the Los Angeles Kings. But nobody knew when any of this would blow over. Guess the only thing to do was wait.

And so, Alex sighed, dejectedly tapped an old wiffle ball with his favorite stick. Might as well pass a little time.
Nate scooped up a handful of pretzels, munched on them in silence. So far, this was kinda disappointing. He really just felt bad for Cara, the poor girl was finally trying to come out of her shell but obviously had no idea what to do.

He remembered the slim little flask of whiskey in his pocket. What the hell, he figured, might as well live a little. Nate fished out the Seagram's, twisted open the top, took a tentative swig, then winced at the taste. Nate was unaccustomed to straight liquor.

Might as well be sociable. Nate held out the whiskey to Helen. "Some party, huh?"
Yeah, Japanese may be in poor taste. I really wasn't thinking when I suggested that.

The Midwest could work, Memphis and Saint Louis are both threatened by the New Madrid fault and ill-prepared. Spain and Mexico both have history with earthquakes, perhpas Barcelona or Mexico City might make good settings.

Mount Vesuvius is expected to erupt sometime soon, which would endanger three million people in the city of Naples.

Still here.
Well, this is just me, but I feel like California is way overdone as a setting. True, most people will be familiar with it, but it seems like virtually every other piece of fiction is set there.

Maybe another major city in an earthquake zone, like Santiago or Tokyo.
And a bump now that we've returned.
Thanks for that breakdown, World Traveler. I think a lot of people fail to realize that making a movie is a highly speculative business venture, not just a bunch of people goofing around and having fun.
